3 THE JOURNEY OF CULTURAL DISCOVERY UKM-GSB is organising 9 Days & 8 Nights travelling programme covering selected cultural attractions within Malaysia, targeting international students and youth. The itinerary will involve the exploration of fascinating places, highlighting Malaysia s cultural diversity and involvement in cultural related activities that will leave long-lasting memories and endear them to Malaysia. More eforts to introduce Malaysian to international students will contribute towards an ambitious plan of turning Malaysia into the educational hub in Asia, if not worldwide. This event will contribute towards the Malaysian educational promotion for international students enrolment in higher learning institutions through the rich tapestry of Malaysian culture. Speciically, the goals are: To encourage networking through active participation of international youth in traditional sport and cultural activities. To build relationships between international students and the local community for better appreciation of the community living in Malaysia To highlight the Malaysian Cultural diversity by visiting various places and cultural attractions throughout Malaysia as well as participating in the planned game-like activities. To promote and provide information to the international students on what higher institutions in Malaysia can ofer for their postgraduate programmes in Malaysia. TARGET PARTICIPANTS International students currently studying in higher education institutions International youth and students from overseas CULTURAL JOURNEY The journey will cover: Selangor, Pahang and Terengganu Each state will have its own unique cultural attractions, historical places and planned activities with local communities. DATE AND DURATION Date: August 2017 Duration: 9 Days / 8 Nights

4 9 DAYS/8 NIGHTS JOURNEY OF CULTURAL DISCOVERY USD500 PER PERSON Price is based on twin or quad sharing and homestay sharing accommodation. Single supplement fee is applicable if you prefer single accommodation whenever available. ONLINE APPLICATION Day One (Sunday, 13 August 2017) Bandar Baru Bangi Arrive in Malaysia and make your own way to Bandar Baru Bangi, recently crowned as a Knowledge City, situated in the district of Hulu Langat, in Selangor, Malaysia. Bangi Newtown is where Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the national university of Malaysia and top business school in the country, is located. Day Two (Monday, 14 August 2017) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bandar Baru Bangi The day begins with an icebreaking session to introduce members of the group, and to familiarize themselves with each other. Later the group will go for a tour of UKM s campus for a glimpse of university s life and will attend a brief overview of the programmes at Graduate School of Business, UKM. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Session 1 The group will learn basic conversational skill of Bahasa Malaysia as well as the cultural dos and don ts of various races in Malaysia.

5 Day Three (Tuesday, 15 August 2017) Sabak Bernam, Selangor The group will depart to Sabak Bernam in Selangor and experience a short stay with host families in a rustic environment. They will learn how to Mencanting Batik (Batik painting), Palu Kompang (Kompang training), and go on a fascinating boat ride to observe Kunang-Kunang (irelies or lightning bugs) in their natural habitat. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Session 2 The group will learn about Malaysia s multiculturalism in where various cultural communities can live alongside each other while maintaining their own original identities. The group will observe how the respect for diferences across society and eforts towards integration can be translated into the national identity. Day Four (Wednesday, 16 August 2017) Sabak Bernam, Selangor The day will continue in Sabak Bernam where the group will experience Corn Harvesting, visit the unique Paddy Museum, a ield day of Mengagau Ikan (catching ish with your bare hands) in the paddy ield, and learn the art of Kuda Kepang (a traditional folk dance). Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Session 3 The group will be exposed to the concept of Community Based Tourism (CBT) as a tool of sustainable development in ecotourism. CBT enables the community to be aware of the commercial and social value placed on their natural and cultural heritage through tourism and thus, will promote conservation of these resources.

6 Day Five (Thursday, 17 August 2017) Taman Negara, Pahang The group will depart to the Malaysia s national park, Taman Negara, the world s oldest rainforest at 130 million years of age. Upon check-in, the group will go on an invigorating river rapid shooting and rafting over eight sets of rapids. Along the way, the group will stop by to visit Kampong Orang Asli (village of an indigenous community) to observe their culture and lifestyle in the jungle, and partake in some of the activities (how to use blowpipe & start ire without a match). Later, the group will experience and enjoy the atmosphere of walking in the jungle at night and the Bumbun Tahan (Tahan Hide- wildlife observation hide). Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Session 4 The group will be introduced to the history and unique cultures of various indigenous tribes in Malaysia. Generally called as the Orang Asli ( original or irst people in Malay), they are not a homogenous group. The Orang Asli comes in many tribes where each tribe has its own history, language, and unique culture and thus, making them an endless source of interest to tourists and locals. Day Six (Friday, 18 August 2017) Taman Negara, Pahang The adventure will continue with the world s longest canopy walkway in Taman Negara- a suspension bridge of 530 meters long and 40 meter above ground-and 2-3 hours scenic boat ride to Kuala Tembeling. The group will be met and greeted by Silat (a traditional martial art) exponents accompanied by Gendang Ketawak (a type of traditional drum). Later the group will also have the opportunity to see local handicraft and learn on how to do some of the crafts. The group will depart to Kuala Terengganu at noon. After check in, the group will have a relaxing garden BBQ dinner and a cultural sharing session among themselves. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Session 5 In this session, the participants will have the opportunity the share each other s culture and experience in order to develop higher understanding and appreciation of other cultures as well as full acceptance of the world s cultural diversity.

7 Day 7 (Saturday, 19 August 2017) Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu After breakfast, the group will depart to Warisan Sari, a building with the concept of the old royal palace, to watch and learn the performance art of an exquisite Malay Gamelan. Malay Gamelan is the traditional ensemble of a music made up predominantly of percussive instruments and dance performance previously exclusive only to the royal circle. Later in the evening the group will go to Teluk Ketapang beach to watch public cultural performances and then continue to Taman Tamadun Islam (Islamic Civilisation Park) which has 22 miniature replicas of famous mosques showcasing the grandeurs of Islamic arts and architectures including the magniicent Crystal Mosque. The group will enjoy the Light and Sound display and have their dinner on a boat, cruising along the river of Kuala Terengganu. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Session 6 The group will learn about Ecotourism in the way it ofers a viable protection of both ecological and local culture whilst at the same time increasing local awareness of the value of preserving the natural and cultural environments as well as aiding in economic development. Day 8 (Sunday, 20 August 2017) Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu The last day here will be spent in a delightful experience shopping for local products at reasonable prices in The Central Market or locally known as Pasar Payang. It is located by the Terengganu River and is one of the most popular tourist spots in Kuala Terengganu. Pasar Payang ofers visitors a variety of traditional handicrafts such as batik, silk, songket, brocade and brassware, fresh produce and numerous other local goods. After lunch, the group will depart back to Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, for a farewell dinner at Graduate School of Business, UKM. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. 10 OUR PREVIOUS EDUTOURISM PROGRAMME 2016 TRAVELLING SHOES: CULTURETHON Travelling Shoes: Malaysian Culturethon 2016 was organised to give an opportunity for potential and current international students from various local higher institutions in Malaysia to explore, experience and embrace the variety of Malaysian Cultures and whilst doing so, they cultivated the essential values of teamwork, critical thinking, and good communication skills that would assist them immensely in their future undertakings. The adage to know Malaysia is to love Malaysia was the underlying theme in this journey of cultural discovery.

PHILIPPE BECQUET (From France) This summer I ve had the privilege to join the pilot project of the Travelling Shoes 2016, organised by the GSB-UKM.This cultural journey took us to several regions of Malaysia ranging from the very top North in Perlis to the very bottom South in Johor. This trip has been an incredibly intense and wonderful experience on gastronomy and culture!

12 EDUTOURISM TRAINING PROGRAMME THE ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN TOURISM The module provides in depth understanding of the importance of local government as the tourism industry s most important partner. It highlights management of the regulatory environment for sustainable tourism and factors that inluences tourism development and investment under which tourism businesses operate. 7 August 2017 SUSTAINING THE BUSINESS OF TOURISM SERVICE & DESTINATION MARKETING The session examines the theoretical foundations and practical application of services marketing including topics of nature of services, consumer behaviour in service settings, service quality, developing service strategies and managing customer service. It provides an overview of the methods to ensure long-term viability and sustainability of the tourism industry. 8 August 2017 This one-day programme applies strategic frameworks to help participants in developing practical strategies to improve business sustainability of their organisations. The course covers the formulation of strategic direction, value creation, competitive advantage, value-chain analysis and execution. The Malaysian culture gives its people unique qualities that shape the mass identity of the nation whilst maintaining the unique variety of faiths, languages, literatures, architectures, folk music, traditional clothing, and the most famous multi-ethnic gastronomy. Active learning about the culture of Malaysia through visit tours and well-planned activities, designed to increase youths knowledge and appreciation of various cultures, will lead towards the narrowing down of cultural distances between Malaysia and other nations. The journey of cultural discovery is full of excitement and enjoyment that brings tremendous beneit of cultural awareness in an informal learning environment to nurture a more culturally adaptive manager of the future.
