2 Lions Code of Ethics TO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. WHENEVER a doubt rises as to the right or ethics of my position or action toward others, to resolve such doubt against myself. TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. ALWAYS to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means. TO AID others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build and not destroy

8 District Governor s Official Visit The District Governor or a Vice Governor is required to make an official visit to each club during the year. With 37 clubs to visit, not counting special events, meetings and Conventions, the Governor s and Vice Governors schedules are quite busy. The following suggestions will help your club make the Governor s visit a pleasurable and productive one. 1. Plan early for the Governor s visit. Contact the Governor to confirm as early in the year as possible. 2. Choose a date that is likely to have high attendance such as a Club Charter Night or Anniversary. 3. Your request for a visit should include all pertinent information such as date, time, location, and if a meal will be served. 4. No other speakers or programs, other than abbreviated business meetings, should be scheduled for this evening. 5. Make sure greeters are available to make the Governor welcome. If the club has particular concerns or issues it would like the Governor to address, they should be addressed in the invitation or by the greeter. 6. Prepare a suitable introduction for the Governor. If your club has a past International officer or Past District Governor, he or she might introduce the Governor. 7. All members should rise when the Governor is officially introduced and when she has concluded her comments. 8. Many clubs present the visiting Governor with a small gift as a token of respect and appreciation for the time and effort in fulfillment of her duties. A donation to one of the State projects in the Governor s name is a particularly meaningful gift. 9. Let the Governor know in advance if you want her to induct new members or new officers, or to present special awards

13 INTERNATIONAL STATE DISTRICT PROJECTS LEADER DOGS FOR THE BLIND Founded by three Detroit area Lions Clubs members in 1939, Leader Dogs for the Blind provides dog guides to people who are blind and visually impaired to enhance their mobility, independence, and quality of life. Each year, over 270 students attend our 26-day residential training program to be paired with a dog guide. This is a life-changing event that opens the doors to independence. In addition to our dog guide program, we offer programs that enhance a person s independence and quality of life in other ways, including orientation and mobility training, Trekker training, and seminars for Orientation and Mobility professionals. Currently, Leader Dogs is the only facility in the Western Hemisphere to teach deaf-blind students to work with a dog guide. Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, our dog guide services are provided free of charge, including room and board and travel to and from our campus in Rochester Hills, Michigan, for students living in North America. Leader Dogs is recognized as a Best in America Charity by the Independent Charities of America (ICA). Make checks payable to Leader Dogs for the Blind. EVERSIGHT MICHIGAN Eversight Michigan is a charitable, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of sight through transplantation, research, education and partnership. Eversight recovers, evaluates and provides human eye tissue for transplantation; supports research into the causes and cures of blinding eye conditions; promotes donation awareness through public and professional education; and provides humanitarian aid to people around the world in need of sight-restoring services. Make checks payable to Eversight

14 INTERNATIONAL STATE DISTRICT PROJECTS LIONS OF MICHIGAN ALL-STATE BAND Each year from 1948 to 1977, a high school band was selected to represent the Lions of Michigan in the annual parade at their international convention. In 1978, an all-state band was organized to honor and play for an incoming Lions International from Michigan. The Lions All-State Band was created and has appeared annually at conventions thereafter. The All-State Band has since become one of the Michigan Lions most acclaimed youth activities. The success of the band is attributed to outstanding students, excellent instructors, and dedicated support staff. Former band directors include Jon Francis, Walter Cole, Jim King, Mack Pittard, and Matt Taton. The current director is Jason Russell. Students from over 300 Michigan high schools and communities have participated in the band since its inception. The band averages students. Performances center around the band s appearance at the Lions Clubs International Convention, held in major cities throughout the world during late June or early July. Additional concerts and appearance are scheduled en route to the convention site or during the homeward journey. The annual tour generally lasts 7 to 10 days. Major cities where the band has performed include Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Phoenix, San Francisco, New Orleans, Honolulu, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Sydney, Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Montreal. Make checks payable to Lions of Michigan All-State Band

15 INTERNATIONAL STATE DISTRICT PROJECTS BEAR LAKE CAMP We aspire to provide a premiere outdoor recreational/educational facility providing opportunities for people of special needs to enhance self-worth, attain independence, acquire social skills and realize their full potential as human beings. We are dedicated to working with the greater community and include them as a partner in addressing the needs of society. We intend to provide an atmosphere that is wholesome, and encourages awareness and appreciation of our natural environment. Make checks payable to Bear Lake Camp. CAMP LEO Camp Leo is a summer camp for physically and emotionally challenged children. The Lions Club of St. Joseph and other area clubs have been supporting this facility since 1984 and, with everyone s continued help, we can keep it going for many more summers. The four-day camp is operated by the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (RESA). The highlight for Lions is the annual Carnival Night. This is the time when Lions we go to the camp, eat dinner with the kids, provide them with games and entertainment, and attend their talent show. It is an experience neither the kids nor Lions soon forget. Make checks payable to Berrien RESA. Please note Camp Leo on the memo line
