The role of vice president for agriculture will be consolidated into the position of dean of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources and director of North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. The vice president position was recently held by D.C. Coston until he resigned in August to become interim president of Dickinson State University. Coston was granted a leave of absence from the NDSU faculty. Ken Grafton, who had held the positions of dean and director, was named interim vice president. Now Grafton will hold the combined administrative position. NDSU Provost Bruce Rafert worked with an advisory committee that included state agricultural leaders to examine merging the administrative duties. The committee unanimously supported streamlining the duties, which is consistent with the way other land grant universities structure the roles, Rafert said.

Proceeds of the auction go to aid Kathy Larson, Sandra Larson, Asley Leigh and Diana Olson, Ward County flood survivors who submitted videos telling their stories, according to a press release issued by MSU. The communications class that ran the auction gathered more than $42,000 in donations to be auctioned and agreed all proceeds would go to flood survivors. This event was a QVC-style auction of 89 packages from area businesses. Minot Chrysler Center was the corporate sponsor of the Beavers Rebuild Fundraiser and matched donations up to $10,000.
Published December 07, 2011, 11:30 PM NDSU might move graduation By: Amy Dalrymple, INFORUM To view the original article, please visit: FARGO North Dakota State University s success on the football field means officials are busy organizing a Plan B for the winter graduation ceremony. If the Bison win Saturday against Lehigh University, NDSU will host a playoff game either Dec. 16 or Dec. 17. Commencement is scheduled for 4 p.m. Dec. 16, a Friday, at the Fargodome. The date and time of commencement won t change regardless of how the football team does. If NDSU wins on Saturday, graduation would be moved to the Bison Sports Arena, said Registrar Kristi Wold-McCormick. Athletic Director Gene Taylor has requested that if NDSU wins Saturday, the semifinal be scheduled for Dec. 17 so it doesn t conflict with graduation. A Friday game is possible because of an ESPN telecast. Wold-McCormick said officials looked at other options, including the Civic Center and Scheels Arena. They determined the Bison Sports Arena was large enough to accommodate the graduates and the location is close to the Fargodome in case people don t hear it was moved. Updates about NDSU s graduation will be posted at
Published December 07, 2011, 11:30 PM Kelley memo explains nickname transition on campus By: Chuck Haga, Forum Communications Co., INFORUM To view the original article, please visit: GRAND FORKS University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley has sent a memorandum throughout the campus community about the ongoing transition away from the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The memorandum, which recounts recent legislative action allowing the transition to proceed, also refers to a frequently asked questions posting on the university s nickname/logo website, edu/logo. Kelley wrote that he has directed the Athletics Department and the Office of University Relations to initiate transition processes with the goal of substantially completing them by the end of December, as directed on Aug. 15 by the State Board of Higher Education. For example, you will see references to the nickname and the use of the logo disappearing from the UND web site, except where it makes sense to retain them for historical or similar reasons, Kelley wrote. The university will also remove nickname images and verbiage from university-owned facilities, except for their use in historical or similar applications, such as championship banners. He noted that the transition won t be entirely completed by Dec. 31. For example, the new uniforms for the UND men s hockey team won t be available until late February, he wrote. As a result, the men s hockey team will finish the rest of the regular season in their current uniforms. Another example relates to our contracts with several vendors licensed to produce UND apparel and merchandise. Under the terms of the contracts, we must provide at least a 90-day notice of a change to the contract. That means licensed vendors will be allowed to produce apparel and merchandise with the Fighting Sioux name and logo through March 31, 2012, and will have until June 30, 2012, to sell off their stock. Retailers will be able to sell Fighting Sioux apparel and merchandise as long as supplies last, but there will be no more production of Fighting Sioux apparel and merchandise under existing licenses after March 31, Kelley asked that all UND employees help with the transition. If you use the nickname and logo in your area, please take steps to remove their use, he wrote.
In the FAQ posted on the nickname website, Kelley said the transition will not include any ban on wearing Fighting Sioux clothing at athletic events, but he asked that fans who do wear or display the nickname and logo to do so in a manner that is respectful to American Indians. The university expects, he added, that fans will want to support our student athletes by wearing official team apparel. In response to another question, Kelley said UND has no current plans to stop using the Ralph Engelstad Arena (REA) or the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center ( The Betty ) for UND athletic events. But for UND to host NCAA championship events at those facilities or the Alerus, the facilities will have to comply with the terms of the NCAA settlement agreement, he said, noting that a link to information about the NCAA lawsuit and settlement from the state attorney general s office also is available at the university s nickname site. Neither the Ralph nor the Betty are required to remove all uses of the nickname and logo, he said. Under the settlement agreement, the facility can retain imagery of independent historical significance, which includes things like championship banners, photographs, and trophies, the Sitting Bull tribute statue, and dedication plaques. The 2007 settlement agreement also allows the facility to retain imagery embedded in architecture, meaning the granite logos in the floors of the REA. Some REA features related to the nickname and logo must be replaced in the course of ordinary wear and tear, and such things as carpeting, tile and seating would be replaced when required. Kelley said the Alerus has agreed to remove Fighting Sioux logos there. Another frequent question: Has UND chosen a new nickname and logo? No, according to the posted document. When the university begins the process of choosing a nickname and logo, there will be prominent public announcements about a careful and deliberate process. The law adopted during the November special session of the Legislature directs UND and the state board to wait until January 2015 to choose a new nickname or logo. When the process for choosing a new nickname and logo is implemented, it will be announced to UND students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends. Until then, the university s athletic teams will be called UND or North Dakota and will use the current interlocking ND logo.
December 7, 2011 BSC, U-Mary headed in the right direction Tribune editorial, BismarckTribune.com To view the original article, please visit: To make the best use of Bismarck State College and the University of Mary, students need to be able to transfer credits from the two-year school to the four-year university without penalty. The presidents of the two largest local institutions of higher education signed an agreement last week to make transferring from BSC to U-Mary seamless in 10 programs. It's a big step in the right direction. The big winners are local students. BSC already had close partnerships with Dickinson State University, Minot State University and the University of North Dakota. Those partnerships make getting a four-year degree in the university system doable from Bismarck. Adding U-Mary to the mix creates more options for students and builds a stronger local higher-education resource. Without the agreement, U-Mary already has 360 BSC students studying on campus. With the agreement, that number will surely increase. A majority of BSC students transfer to one of the school's four-year partners, according to BSC President Larry Skogen. The 10 programs covered by the agreement include respiratory therapy, music, music with emphasis in sacred music, music education, political philosophy, management, computer support specialist, athletic training, exercise science and physical education. Hopefully, the agreement will be expanded in the future to cover a wider range of career options. There's a growing need for people to retrain over the course of their working lives. The need to go back to school, to maintain a career or change can force people into long commutes, or temporary or permanent moves, if those classes are not offered locally. Adding flexibility to higher education programming in the Bismarck-Mandan area can make a huge difference in the lives of some families. It certainly benefits more than the traditional college-age citizens. With North Dakota's reputation for healthy agriculture, business and industry sectors, businesses and people are taking a look at locating in the Bismarck-Mandan area. The kinds of educational offerings available in the local community can prove to be important assets for families or companies thinking about locating in the area. It also means a better trained and educated workforce. The agreement between BSC and U-Mary improves prospects for Bismarck-Mandan and its citizens.
December 7, 2011 Historical significance: Students survey cemetery, correct documented past By ANDREA JOHNSON - Staff Writer, Minot Daily News To view the original article, please visit: The so-called experts aren't always right, especially if they're outsiders. Past surveys of the First Lutheran Church Cemetery in Minot deemed the site of "no historical significance" despite the fact that Erik Ramstad and other Minot founding fathers are buried there, said Mark Timbrook, who teaches the "History and Preservation of American Cemeteries" class at Minot State University. The class has spent the past two summers surveying the cemetery, recording the location and details of headstones and noting which headstones are most in need of cleaning and repair. A copy of the students' cultural resource survey update will be available in the special collections area at the university's Gordon B. Olson Library. It has also been accepted by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. "The history of the site has been officially updated," said Timbrook. "These students made a difference in the cemetery's preservation and in correcting the site's poorly documented past." Timbrook said the previous surveys said the cemetery was created in 1908 and was of no significance to Minot. They were done by people who don't live in Minot, said Timbrook and students. The class found that the survey information was wrong. There are graves in the cemetery that date back to the 1880s, some of which were likely moved from the church's first site in what is now Roosevelt Park. Timbrook and students Susan Brooks, Sarah Carr and Misty Neumiller said they believe the first burials were on a farmstead belonging to the Erik Skaro family. Timbrook said Skaro may have grown tired of living here after the land flooded. In 1892, Erik Ramstad, Minot's first settler, according to the inscription on his head stone, placed land in trust with First Lutheran Church and created a new cemetery at the current site adjacent to Minot State University, said Timbrook. Timbrook said the property was deeded to the church in 1908 and, that year, the cemetery was surveyed a second time with significant changes made in landscape and orientation due to community growth and road changes. Timbrook and his students said visitors to the cemetery can still find traces of the beginnings of the cemetery in the way the grass grows and the position of some of the headstones. The original orientation of the cemetery was north-south, so some headstones are positioned accordingly. It was later changed to an east-west orientation. Students said many of the headstones in the cemetery are badly in need of repair. Some are sunken into the ground and cannot be seen; others have biological material growing on the headstones; some are cracked or are loose, so leaning against them might topple them. Damage has been done by lawn mower strikes, exposure to the elements and vandalism. Neumiller said she has created a list of rules for visitors to the cemetery giving hours the cemetery is open and warning against leaning on headstones. Another list will give information about the history of the cemetery and about some of the people who were buried there.
Brooks said she was touched by the stories she has learned about the people buried in the cemetery that have made the students aware of the humanity of these deceased citizens of Minot. In some sense, they live on through those stories, she said. The youngest person buried in the graveyard was a one-day-old baby; the oldest person buried there was 102, said Carr. The number of young children buried in the cemetery shows the high child mortality of Minot's early years, as does a woman who died in childbirth buried with her baby who was born and died the same day as its mother. There is also a murder victim buried in the cemetery who was killed by his roommate in the 1920s. Carr's survey of the graveyard showed that there are a total of 468 grave markers recorded during the student's walk through. First Lutheran Cemetery was at the height of its use between 1900 and 1960s, with the 1920s being the peak years for burials. The inscriptions and motifs on the headstones also say a lot about the times and the people buried there. According to Carr's study, 143 of the headstones have a flower engraved upon them. Other popular engravings were crosses, lambs and other motifs with religious significance. The most common names of people buried in the cemetery show a strong Norwegian influence. There are 16 men named Ole buried in the cemetery and nine women named Ingeborg. The other common male names students found were John, Oscar, Hans, Henry, Peter, Albert, Alfred, Carl and Nels. The other most common names for females buried in the cemetery were Clara, Anna, Emma, Marie, Agnes, Hilda and Karen. Timbrook said the class will continue next summer as well. Students will continue surveying a different portion of the cemetery, identify headstones in need of attention and try to repair those that don't require hiring an expert to do so. Other prominent Minot area pioneers buried in the cemetery include the Honorable John J. Lee, Peter Ramstad, George and Gunder Reishus, Ole and Gunhild Sundre, and long-time Minot legislator Brynhild Haugland. Students in this class were Brooks, Minot; Carr, Minot; Kyle Craig, Cando; Terry-Lynn Falcon, Donnybrook; Neumiller, Minot; Obed Rodriguez, Stuttgart, Germany; Leah Ronholdt, Minot; Kala Yarbrough, Sawyer; and Nathan Zochert, Minot. Gary Huwe, Minot, served as a student intern; Eunice Timbrook volunteered with program administration and Margaret Sherve, associate professor of English, assisted with instruction.

Published December 06, 2011, 11:30 PM Looking for a dislike button: Sioux nickname fans don t like retirement of its Facebook page By: Chuck Haga, Forum Communications Co., INFORUM To view the original article, please visit: GRAND FORKS The University of North Dakota has advised fans on its University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Facebook page that the popular page will be retired shortly, and fans are urged to shift their allegiance to a new page, UND Sports. Also, the proprietor of another page with Fighting Sioux in the page name has been warned by Facebook that he could face copyright infringement problems. The university is working to retire the nickname and associated logo by the end of the year, with certain exceptions allowed for contractual, licensing and other commitments. The UND Athletics Department last week asked leaders of conferences in which its teams play to stop using the name and logo as of Jan. 1 and instead refer to the university s teams as UND or North Dakota with an interlocking ND as the logo. A posting on the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux page Monday morning reads, North Dakota Athletics fans, thank you for your great support in making this page one of the most popular in collegiate athletics. Please Like our new page, UND Sports, as this page will be retired and no longer available in the coming weeks. As of today, nearly 48,000 people had clicked on the old page s like button, indicating they are fans of the page, and dozens of page members have logged on to express their dislike of the change. What a shame! one posted, while another asked, Where is the dislike button for the university president and athletic director? It would be a sad day to see the Ralph (Engelstad Arena) torn down, another posted, but I think they should do it. By early Tuesday evening, 846 people had registered their like of the new UND Sports page, which displays a banner featuring the words We are North Dakota and an interlocking ND but neither the Fighting Sioux name nor the much-revered logo. The site included just two entries, including the announcement of the new site and promises of updates, news, videos, special features and more to come!
The name Fighting Sioux is used on dozens of Facebook pages not officially tied to the university, including Long Live the Fighting Sioux, Keep the Fighting Sioux s Name and No more Fighting Sioux no more alumni donations to UND. At Fighting Sioux Forever, which has 18,775 members, the site s theme is prominently posted: They will never take away our Sioux pride. We will always and forever be the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Travis Gray, who operates two Facebook pages devoted to UND hockey, said he received a notice Tuesday from Facebook advising him that certain content he had posted had been removed or access to it had been disabled because we received a notice from a third party that the content infringes their copyright(s). Peter Johnson, a UND spokesman, said that a UND Athletics Department employee had made the complaint because the site looks like an official UND site and could be construed by the casual reader to be an official site, but it included material that didn t properly represent the university. It was an isolated incident, Johnson said, and the employee acted on his own. It s not a policy by the university at this point to go after Facebook pages. Gray said he had posted on his personal Facebook page on Monday that UND will be starting getting away from the logos but I didn t think it would affect my Facebook pages. I have been doing Sioux hockey pages for a few years now on Facebook and was shocked to get this, he wrote in an to the Herald. When the Legislature voted last month to repeal a law requiring UND to keep the Fighting Sioux name and logo, it also directed the university and State Board of Higher Education to wait three years before adopting a new nickname. That would allow for a cooling off period, several legislators said, but others have suggested it also leaves time for other actions to play out. Lawsuits have been filed in federal court by American Indian students at UND who oppose the nickname and by members of the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux tribes who support its continued use. The repeal of the state s nickname mandate faces a possible referendum, and nickname supporters also plan to seek an initiated measure on the issue. Petition forms for both were filed on Friday with the secretary of state. UND officials have said they need to retire the name and logo to resolve differences with the NCAA and secure UND s entry into the Division I Big Sky Conference next year. But they have acknowledged the strong feelings many students, alumni and other fans have for the symbols.
Another Facebook page, calling itself Fighting Sioux Friday, asks UND students and others to wear some article of clothing displaying the Sioux logo or the Fighting Sioux nickname every Friday to show that we will not let this tradition die so easily.
