Pocahontas, Iowa Vol. 4 No June 12, 2013 Local News Pocahontas Healthcare Foundation Scholarships The Pocahontas Healthcare Foundation recently awarded eleven area high school seniors $510 scholarships. Applications were distributed to the Pocahontas County area high schools in January with a deadline of April 12th for any senior who was pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Recipients of the Foundation scholarships this year were Alexis Betten, Hannah Goedert, Morgan Kirschel, Hannah Maley, Ashley Radig, MacKenzie Rittgers, Nicole Roetman & Cassandra Schneider from Pocahontas Area High School, Taylor Lago and Andrea Whitmore from Newell-Fonda High School and Caitlyn Heuton from Laurens Marathon High School. These scholarships were made possible through generous donations received from Gary & Kathy Burns, Jeff & Kathy Johnson, James & Julie Roetman, Pat & Mary Sturtz - Pocahontas Pharmacy, Pocahontas Manor Care Center, Hughes Pharmacy, Rick & Kendra Winegarden, Dr. Darwin & Becky Schossow, Erin & Kerry Peterson and the Pocahontas Community Hospital. 4 GCN Domestic Director Dennis Anderson Serves in Oklahoma Dennis Anderson of Albert City, Global Compassion Network Domestic Disaster Relief Director, spent nearly two weeks providing relief to families in Moore, Oklahoma following the recent devastating tornadoes. He led several groups of volunteers from Iowa and Nebraska in debris cleanup. Altogether, more than 25 families were assisted and the volunteers did everything from raking yards to tearing down homes to helping families search for lost possessions. They also had a chance to talk and pray with a number of homeowners. We worked at a home that was about a block away from the school where the kids were killed, shared Anderson. While cleaning up, I found a couple pieces of debris from the school. It makes you stop and think how fragile life is and how valuable a relationship with Christ is. GCN Domestic Disaster Relief provides immediate assistance after a natural disaster, training for volunteers, and opportunities for mission trips targeting the forgotten or neglected towns, neighborhoods, and families. Led by Anderson, GCN s mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ by addressing the physical needs of people s homes as well as sharing the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. When disasters occur domestically, GCN is ready to serve those in need. GCN works with local churches and faithbased organizations to find families with the greatest need and then offers volunteers, equipment, resources, and the hope of Christ. GCN works in two phases; phase one is to provide immediate assistance, while phase two is assisting with rebuilding. In April, GCN recruited a team of volunteers to serve in Worthington, Minn. following a damaging ice storm.
