1 June 2014 Newsletter INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Dear Friends, News From The University Librarian News From the University Librarian New Resources at the University Libraries In Memoriam: Dr. Paul J. Homsher In Memoriam: Dr. Jo Ann Sims This month I will retire from the University Libraries after 10 years of serving as the University Librarian. The Libraries is well situated for making this transition, with all library management positions held by experienced individuals and with an exceptionally well-trained and service oriented staff. The Libraries strategic planning process will continue; recruitment is ongoing for the Department Head, Special Collections and University Archives; the Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library has moved into its new location in the Barry Art Building on Monarch Way; and our many other scheduled programs and services will continue as planned. Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library Moves to New Location Fire Sale of Friends Merchandise Continues Dreams, Dilemmas and Dangers of the Internet Perry Library Summer Service Desk Hours Annual Author Dinner and Silent Auction Friends Reception Honors Libraries Staff Friends of the Libraries Annual Membership Meeting Author Event: Dr. James V. Koch Upcoming Campus Events I have been fortunate to have worked at the University Libraries and Old Dominion University during a time of significant developments for the Libraries, the University, and the community. It has been an especially rewarding experience - working with a library staff committed to the development of a research library ensuring high quality services and resources for our students and faculty, scholars and researchers, university staff and offices, donors, and community users. During my tenure as University Librarian, the Libraries expansion of research resources, the integration of information literacy and instructional programs into general education and other academic programs, the development of the Special Collections and University Archives into a local and regional asset, the growth of the collections and services in the F. Ludwig Diehn Composers Room and the Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library, and the successful collaboration of the Learning Commons with other campus entities have resulted in the University Libraries becoming a service highly valued by all our constituents, from students to faculty to community users - to identify just a few of our high quality accomplishments. George Fowler, Associate University Librarian for Information Resources and Technology, will serve as Interim University Librarian starting July Mr. Fowler may be reached at or gfowler@odu.edu. Thank you for your support that has ensured the success of the Old Dominion University Libraries. Best regards, Virginia S. O Herron, University Librarian 1

2 New Resources at the University Libraries PsycTESTS is a research database that provides access to psychological tests, measures, scales, surveys, and other assessments as well as descriptive information about the test and its development and administration. Although including commercial tests, the database s primary focus is on unpublished tests - those developed by researchers but not made commercially available. The largest of its kind, Global Plants is a community-contributed database featuring more than 2 million high resolution plant type specimen images and other foundational materials from the collections of hundreds of herbaria around the world. The House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, , is the most detailed primary source for 18 th Century Britain, its colonies, and the wider world. Coverage includes John Harrison s longitude clocks, India s early days in the British empire, and the scandalous tenure of Britain s first prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole ( ). As well as sessional papers from both House of Commons and House of Lords, the collection also includes supplementary materials. In Memoriam: Dr. Paul J. Homsher Paul J. Homsher, Life Member of the Friends of the Libraries and former member of the Friends Board of Directors, passed away on May 25, He was 8. Paul joined Old Dominion University in 1962 and during his 5 years on the active faculty he was acting director and director of the Biomedical Sciences Program ( ) operated jointly by ODU and Eastern Virginia Medical School, associate dean of the School of Sciences and Health Professions ( ), associate dean of the College of Sciences ( ) and interim dean of the College of Sciences (1991-9). After his retirement, as an Old Dominion University professor emeritus of biological sciences, he frequently returned to campus to teach as an adjunct, and to participate in meetings and activities of the Faculty Emeriti Association and Friends of Old Dominion University Libraries. He served as president of the emeriti organization and was a life member and director of the Friends of the Libraries. Paul has been called the consummate fundraiser, with his gift for finding common ground with others and his persistence in pursuing support for the Friends. We will all miss Paul s warm smile, his wonderful sense of humor and his unending support for the Friends of the Libraries. The family has suggested memorial donations to The Homsher Family Lecture Series Endowment at Old Dominion University Libraries. This endowment was established in 2008 by Paul and Judy Homsher to support the Friends of the Libraries. Old Dominion University administrators are planning a separate memorial service on campus, but will announce the time and place for it later. The Homsher family has requested that the university service be held after the fall 2014 semester begins. 2

3 In Memoriam: Dr. Jo Ann Sims Dr. Jo Ann Sims, a Life Member of the Friends of the ODU Libraries, passed away on Thursday, May 29. Jo Ann was a vivacious and talented musician, as well as a dedicated teacher. A native of Belleville, Ill., Jo Ann made her home in Norfolk in 1994 as she joined the music faculty of Old Dominion University, where she served as a senior lecturer in voice and chief departmental advisor until her retirement. She previously held faculty positions at Bradley University, the University of Memphis, the University of Mississippi and Cleveland State University. Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library Moves to New Location In May 2014 the Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library moved from its previous location in the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Building to room 2008 of the newly constructed Barry Art Building, located at 4600 Monarch Way. Staff from National Library Relocations began moving the collection on Tuesday, May 27, Photo: Stuart Frazer and completed the move on Hofheimer Art Library after the move. Friday, May 0. The Library reopened on Monday, June 2. The Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library first opened in The art collections contain specialized books, journals, online resources, audio-visual titles and computers for students and faculty in the visual arts. Fire Sale of Friends Merchandise Continues Reduced prices remain for all of our Friends logo merchandise. These items make great gifts. Our t-shirts, heavy duty 100% cotton, available in sizes S to XL, have been reduced from $10 to $5 each. This would be a great beach bag! The tote bags, 18 x 15 with a zippered top and a full width front pocket with a Velcro closure, have also been reduced from $10 to $5 each. The 16-oz stainless steel travel mugs have been reduced from $15 to $ each.

4 Dreams, Dilemmas and Dangers of the Internet In an exciting collaboration, the Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries co-presented with Naro Cinema the 90-minute documentary GOOGLE AND THE WORLD BRAIN, said to be the most ambitious project ever conceived on the Internet. The one evening showing brought a large audience out to see the film about Google s scanning millions of books beginning in 2002 in an effort to create a giant global library containing every book in existence, as well as a higher form of intelligence, something that H.G. Wells had predicted in his 197 essay World Brain. Copyrighted authors and others around the globe campaigned to stop Google; that took the issue to court and a decision with global consequences in A rigorous discussion followed the movie, co-facilitated by Associate University Librarian George Fowler and author and professor of Philosophy Dylan Wittkower. This is part of the larger conversation at the intersection of technology and privacy, business and ethics, libraries and knowledge resources. From left to right: Associate University Librarian George Fowler, Friends of the Libraries Board Member Joanne Fish, Friends of the Libraries President Gail Nicula and Professor Dylan Wittkower. Steve Yetiv Dean Charles Wilson presented the Friends Outstanding Achievement Award to Tim Seibles, Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Old Dominion University. Tim Seibles is the author of several poetry collections, including Hurdy-Gurdy, Hammerlock, and Buffalo Head Solos. Charles Wilson and Tim Seibles Photo; Cheryl Copper One hundred and twenty-five guests attended the dinner. The wonderful Silent Auction items led to some spirited bidding, raising a total of $,094. Friends Reception Honors Libraries Staff On May 7, the Friends of the Libraries held their annual reception to honor all Libraries staff. This reception is also the time when the Librarian of the Year and the Staff Member of the Year are announced. This year there were two winners in each category! Back: Morel Fry and Nicole Justice.
