4 Coaches Role The Coach is the Backbone of the Competition No team may compete in CyberPatriot until there is first a responsible adult willing to accept the following responsibilities. (1) Competitor Protection. The coach is responsible for the protection and safety of their team s competitors while involved in CyberPatriot activities. Access to minor students in a way that protects them, respects parental prerogatives, and follows legal statutes (e.g., Children's Internet Protection Act), is the coach s responsibility. As the gate keeper for contact with the competitors, the coach is accountable for the interaction of mentors or technical advisors to the competitors. (2) Competition Integrity. Ensuring the integrity of the competition is essential to the fairness of the competition. Once the competition begins, the coach must ensure that their competitors receive no assistance, except between competitors on the same team. The coach upholds the guiding and operating principles of the competition at the team level. (3) Official Point of Contact. The coach is the official point of contact for a team. Official CyberPatriot competition and other correspondence is provided to coaches for further dissemination to their teams. It is key during competition that coaches monitor their for up-to-date information that competitors will not receive directly. The role of official point of contact cannot be delegated to the mentor. (4) Abide by the CyberPatriot Coaches Agreement. 4

7 Participant Kits Boxes are packed per coach, not per team. Each coach will receive one box with enough gear for all of their teams. LAUSD teams are not included on the list. Their kits will be sent to and distributed by Beyond the Bell. Teams with incomplete rosters are also excluded from the list. 17 Rules of the Road Big Four Rules 1. All images must be deleted by the end of the round 2. Teams have a single six consecutive hours to complete all work Begins when first image is opened in VMware Player Example: If a team starts at 1:00 p.m. Friday, it must finish by 7:00 p.m. that day Cisco Networking Quiz is included in all work starts at 1 p.m.; finished by 7 p.m. 3. Team may only have one instance of each image opened at a time Good: (1) Windows 8 and (1) Windows Vista image opened simultaneously Bad: (2) Windows 8 images opened simultaneously Teams can re-extract an image if the old image is closed and deleted, but must regain all of the point they had on the deleted image 4. If your image(s) can t reach the scoring server, please contact your IT department or network administrator Port 80 and 443 must be open Biggest difficulty: Proxy server, firewall, or filter blocking access to the scoring server Local scoring feedback will not be displayed without connection to server 17

18 Things to Keep in Mind Substitutions Soccer rules; once a Competitor is subbed out, they cannot return Resources Teams can use only resources that are publicly available, reasonably easy to locate, and do not require payment or membership to access Teams can download Service Packs, updates, and other software to their host machine prior to the round to use on the images Other skills important: time management, teamwork, etc. Contingency planning backup in case of hardware, software, or network failure Allocating system resources Teams can do it, but CPOC will not troubleshoot or consider appeals stemming from resource issues Take Notes!!!

19 Saving Scoring Data To back up scoring data on a Windows image: In the image, navigate to C:\CyberPatriot\ScoringData Copy the ENTIRE contents and compress copied files to a.zip file Copy.zip file to your host machine To back up scoring data on an Ubuntu image: Navigate to /opt/cyberpatriot/scoringdata Copy the ENTIRE contents of this directory into a.zip file. Copy the.zip file to your host machine. Shut the images down Do not open them again unless directed to do so by the CyberPatriot Program Office Delete the images per the instructions in the post-competition 19

20 Public Scoreboard A public scoreboard is available: Shows image scores only Displays all teams with the ability to sort by score, division, team number, and team, and tier All scores on the scoreboard are unofficial and for reference purposes only Displays Region/Category for Open/All Service and State for Middle School 20

22 High School Tiers and Advancement Open: Top 12 teams in the Platinum Tier advance to the National Finals Competition All Service: Top two teams from each Category in the Platinum Tier plus one Wild Card advance to the National Finals Competition

23 Regional/Category Awards and Tier Certificates Regional/Category Awards Given to the top three teams in each region/category in both divisions Teams from any tier can win them, however: Platinum Tier teams are always ranked higher than Gold and Silver Tier teams Gold Tier teams are always ranked higher than Silver Tier teams Example: If a Silver Tier team from Ohio has 300 points and a Platinum Tier team from Ohio has 20 points, the Platinum Tier team will still be ranked higher Regional/Category Round Tier Certificates Given to the top three teams in each region/category in each tier

24 Middle School Advancement and Awards Top three teams advance to the National Finals Competition The top three teams in each state receive a State Award

25 President s Day Weekend Open Distinct from the CyberPatriot VII season Performance does not factor into CyberPatriot VII standings or awards Additional opportunity to test cybersecurity skills Focus on networking and forensics Open to ALL teams in all Divisions Practice Round January 28 February 6, 2015 Cisco and Leidos February 13 15, 2015 (Presidents Day Weekend) Backup: February 20 22, 2015

26 Miscellaneous ALL TEAMS may compete in the Presidents Day Weekend Open Post-Competition Survey You can improve the competition! Past suggestions: Sunday competition dates, Tiers, State & Region Rounds, Middle School, multiple teams for one Coach, Training Materials Integrity Final rounds. Remind competitors to follow the rules. Much is on the line. No information sharing between teams, etc. CyberPatriot Rules Advisory Group Advises the CyberPatriot Program Office on rules and policy. Will be requesting Coach and Mentor volunteers in May.
