3 Science Seminar and Workshop on the Future of Manufacturing WHEN: October :30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. WHERE: Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute Callaway Manufacturing Research Center Building (813 Ferst Dr., Atlanta, GA 30332) Organized by Georgia Tech (GT), Georgia Tech- Lorraine, and Arts et Métiers ParisTech (AMPT), this two-day workshop will enable manufacturing experts to share their experiences in research, development, innovation, commercialization, and education in the domain of advanced manufacturing. Identifying key questions and leveraging mutual strengths are expected to create new opportunities for joint collaborations both in the US and Europe. Registration required. Powering the World with Photovoltaics: Status and Opportunities WHEN: November 3 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. WHERE: Hodges Room Centergy Building at Georgia Tech Square (Suite 335, 75 5th St., Atlanta, GA 30308) Using more renewable energy sources for electricity generation is without doubt on the global agenda to mitigate climate change. Solar power, particularly photovoltaics, is an attractive technology that offers innovative approaches than can transform our electrical infrastructure. This workshop organizedby Georgia Tech (GT) and CEA-Liten (France) will focus on solar energy generation, with a particular emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) materials and devices. An overview of the PV technology landscape in Europe and in the United States will be presented and an outlook on future opportunities and challenges generated by recent progress in research and development will be provided. The event will consist of scientific and technical presentations by experts in the field, followed by round-table discussions in an effort to help identify opportunities for joint collaborations. This year, a new France-Atlanta award of sustainable innovation will also be attributed. CONTEMPORARY MUSIC An Evening with Ensemble Variances & Sonic Generator WHEN: November 9 8:00 p.m. WHERE: Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech (349 Ferst Dr., Atlanta, GA 30332) French music group Ensemble Variances, renowned for its eclectic performances, will join forces with Sonic Generator - Georgia Tech s acclaimed chamber music ensemble in residence - for an evening of innovative music by French and American composers. The program features music by guest vocalist Lisa Bielawa, Ensemble Variances director Thierry Pécou, percussionist Andy Akiho and a performance of Steve Reich s Pulitzer Prize winning Double Sextet. The concert is part of Ensemble Variances first US tour and the kickoff event of Sonic Generator s 10th anniversary season. This event is made possible by the ongoing collaboration between Georgia Tech and its partners in Metz, France.

7 Humanitarian Affairs Thailand, Photo: Raks Thai/CARE Climate Change and Humanitarian Aid: Local and Global Stakes in COP21 WHEN: October 28 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Emory University - Mathematics and Science Center (Room E208, 400 Dowman Dr., Atlanta, GA 30322) Why is climate change a concern for humanitarian aid and development actors? In anticipation of the UN global conference on climate change (COP21) that will be held in Paris in December 2015, a panel of international development professionals, climate change researchers, and policy experts will discuss past lessons and next steps to assist vulnerable populations in dealing with climate impacts. Drawing on experiences of communitybased climate adaptation and global efforts towards climate change mitigation, panellists will address key questions about what is at stake for the humanitarian community. They will discuss how their respective organizations are promoting practices and advocating for policies to prevent climate-induced humanitarian crises and what they hope COP21 will achieve in terms of these efforts to save lives and eradicate extreme poverty. Education series: Humanitarian Work in French-Speaking Countries WHEN: October 27-November 9 WHERE: Participating high schools and universities in Metro Atlanta French is one of the most widely spoken languages in humanitarian and development work in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. For this education series, representatives from the Carter Center, CARE and the Peace Corps will provide insight into how their organisations use French while working to alleviate suffering in the world. Students will learn more about current humanitarian issues and discover some of the professional advantages of speaking a second language.
