2 Call for Entries IDEAS TAKING SHAPE: INNOVATIONS FOR TOMORROW ALUMINUM PROFILES CAN BE FORMED TO: Reduce piece count / provide complex integral features Facilitate manufacturing and assembly Reduce costs and lead times for materials and production Increase product reliability and durability Simplify maintenance and repairs for the final user of the product Build in functionality and an attractive appearance that can make the product easier to sell. SOME LIMITATIONS OF THE ALUMINUM EXTRUSION PROCESS: When designing your profile, keep in mind that the aluminum extrusion process does have its limitations. Please consider: Circle Size: The circumscribing circle that the profile could fit through Weight per foot (Wt/Ft): Is it too heavy or too light? Shape Constraints: High tongue ratios; Somewhat balanced wall thicknesses Professional designers, engineers, and manufacturers, as well as students studying design, engineering, architecture or related field are invited to enter The 2016 International Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition. SHOW OFF YOUR TALENT AND CREATIVITY! The Design Competition showcases innovation in design and engineering while recognizing talented designers and engineers for their ingenuity and creativity in designing products and systems that feature extruded aluminum. Your design could win money! Enter the 2016 Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition to compete for cash prizes and student scholarships totaling $20,000, including one Grand Prize that is awarded across all categories and classes for the best aluminum extrusion design. Past winning designs included an extruded aluminum floor panel assembly for the Mercedes SL, a custom-designed LED light fixture, and a convertible sport trailer/camper. 3 PROFESSIONAL CLASS Individual designers and companies are eligible to enter the Design Competition. Aluminum extruders and their customers are encouraged to team up to enter their design in the Competition. We want to reward your innovation and ingenuity! The following are suggested categories for products in the Professional Class: Structural/Architectural Architects and designers are increasingly discovering extruded aluminum s advantages for structural applications. The Structural category can encompass: Architectural components Decking Walkways Transportation Weight savings, increased safety, and improved performance are persistent concerns for transportation equipment designers and manufacturers. The transportation category can include: Automotive Aerospace Marine Engineered Products Products and parts for the commercial, industrial, and consumer markets are covered in this general category. Designs that fit in this category include: Sporting and recreational equipment Machine components and controls Electrical and thermal components Alternative Energy Aluminum s sustainable characteristics, along with the versatility of the extrusion process, make aluminum extrusions ideal for alternative energy applications. Alternative energy including: Solar power systems Building-integrated photovoltaic modules Wind power Balconies and bridges Modular building systems Office component systems Rail Other related applications Lighting and lighting components Appliances, and more Hydro-electric power Geothermal energy systems CASH PRIZES AND STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The ET Foundation is grateful to Bonnell Aluminum for their sponsorship of the cash awards and student scholarships. The winning design will meet or exceed each of these design criteria and the student will receive a scholarship totaling $2,500! 4 STUDENT CLASS Students have a unique way of looking at the world, which makes them well qualified to offer innovative solutions to design challenges. Think outside the box to come up with new, inventive, and resourceful uses for extruded aluminum! Student Class scholarship Awards are presented to the First, Second and Third Place entries, as well as the LED Lighting Design. BONNELL ALUMINUM LED LIGHTING DESIGN CHALLENGE This year, the ET Foundation is pleased to include a new student category for the competition: the Bonnell Aluminum LED Lighting Design Challenge! In addition to the First, Second, and Third Place Scholarship Awards, the Bonnell Aluminum LED Lighting Challenge Award will be presented to the student entry that satisfies the following criteria: 1. Entry is an LED lighting application that utilizes either standard or custom-designed extruded aluminum shapes. 2. The LED lighting application can be for either a residential or commercial application, interior or exterior application. 3. Meets the four basic ET Foundation Design Competition criteria of creativity, practicality, product/process advantage and market impact/potential 4. es the following technical aspects of lighting fixtures: Demonstrates entrant knowledge and application of aluminum extrusions to light-weight the fixture relative to other competing materials Demonstrates heat transfer knowledge and application in designing the heat dissipating specifications for the lighting fixture Recognition and application of leveraging the natural reflectivity advantages of aluminum versus competing materials 5. Quality of the design aesthetics in the intended target market place. RECOGNITION Winners will be recognized on the ET Foundation and AEC websites, as well as in the media, giving you the recognition you deserve! In addition, selected Design Competition entries, including winning designs from the 2016 Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition, will be displayed at the Eleventh International Aluminum Extrusion Technology Seminar & Exposition (ET 16) to be held in May 2016 in Chicago, Illinois USA. The ET Seminar is the world s most respected and longest running educational event devoted to all facets of the aluminum extrusion industry featuring the brightest ideas and freshest breakthroughs. ET attracts industry professionals from around the globe, including more than 50 countries. Visit for more information. JUDGING CRITERIA Entries are judged based on the following criteria: Creativity Have you created innovation in design? Have you created a new extrusion application? Have you used aluminum extrusion to solve a design challenge? Practicality Is your design cost-effective, easy to fabricate and assemble? Have you improved a product by using extruded aluminum over another material and/or process? Product /Process Advantage Does your design take full advantage of the capabilities of the extrusion process? Does it employ the performance characteristics of aluminum; demonstrate the inherent advantages of the material and the process? Market Impact/Potential Will your design be marketable? What is the likelihood of its commercial success? A panel of respected professionals from the aluminum extrusion industry, academia, and/or the trade press will judge the competition in spring Winning designs will be those that best demonstrate the superior benefits of aluminum extrusions whether by creating a new product or improving an existing one. Designs must be original and make use of at least one extruded aluminum component. Multiple entries may be accepted. Special consideration will be given to entries that include a 3-D printed model or actual sample of the extruded part design. Note: If any category yields no entries deemed by the judges to adequately address the competition s criteria, a prize will not be awarded in that category.

Student Signature COMPETITION RULES: Entries must be received by the ET Foundation at the address above by March 7, Submission of an entry acknowledges the right of the ET Foundation to use it for exhibition and publication. All entries received shall become the property of the ET Foundation. However, entrants may request that their entries be returned at the conclusion of the competition at their own expense. The ET Foundation is not responsible for any lost, late, or damaged entries. Winners shall be selected by a panel of independent judges chosen by the ET Foundation. If any category yields no entries deemed by the judges to address adequately the competition criteria, a prize will not be awarded in that category. Winners will be announced via a news release posted to the ET Foundation website and disseminated to the media. All taxes due on cash awards are the winner s responsibility. Entry into the competition constitutes permission to use the entrant s design and his, her, or its name, likeness, and affiliation for promotional purposes without further compensation. Any person signing the application on behalf of a company, firm, or organizational entity represents and warrants that he or she has authority to enter the competition on the company s behalf and bind the company to any and all competition rules. All entrants agree to be bound by any and all additional rules established by the ET Foundation for the competition. Date
