Its members come from all fields of vexillology, including flag collectors and historians, government officials, museum directors, flag dealers and manufacturers, writers, designers, and teachers, as well as those interested in flags as a hobby. NAVA publishes Raven: A Journal of Vexillology and a newsletter, NAVA News, hosts a web site, holds annual meetings, undertakes special projects, and participates in international vexillological events. NAVA has no commercial, religious, or political objectives, nor does it participate in the patriotic promotion of any particular flag. 4 TOUR SITES Virginia City is a historic silver mining town that put Nevada on the map, and is the largest National Historic District in the country. The massive vein of silver found in the 1860s was called the Comstock Lode, and since then, this mining town built on the side of Mt. Davidson has been known simply as the Comstock. Our tour will visit Virginia City and provide an opportunity to walk around, see the sights, and stop for lunch. Constructed in 1870, The Nevada State Capitol is still in use, standing as a testament to the foresight of Nevada's founding fathers. Other grand buildings surround the capitol, marking the incredible growth of the capital city. But the capitol building, constructed of native sandstone, holds the special distinction of being the second oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi River. On display is an interpretive exhibit on Nevada history and, of special interest, the 1964 collection of Nevada county flags (Nevada is one of the only states where all counties are vexilliferous). The Marjorie Russell Clothing and Textile Research Center is a study center for understanding historic costumes and textiles, created in 1992 under the direction of the Nevada State Museum and Nevada Historical Society. It comprises the costume and textile collections of both founding institutions and the University of Nevada, Reno. The collections hold over 10,000 artifacts, with a significant flag collection available for NAVA viewing, including the oldest flag in Nevada (an 1856 Fremont-Dayton campaign flag) and the oldest state flags. Jim Ferrigan will speak on here on Nevada Flags.

5 KEYNOTE SPEAKER Robert A. Nylen is curator of history at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, the state s capital. He will speak on Nevada history. Bob has been actively involved for the last 30 years doing research, writing, and lecturing about the rich history of the state of Nevada. Starting in 1976, he worked for seven years at the Nevada Historical Society as a researcher and has been employed at the museum for 23 years, where he has helped to curate many of its fine exhibits. He helped to develop the popular Kit Carson Trail Walking Tour in Carson City and handles all the tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Originally from Riverside, Illinois, Bob has a BA and MA in History from the University of Nevada, Reno. He has written extensively on Nevada history, including writing or contributing to Letters From the Nevada Frontier: Correspondence of Tasker L. Oddie, , The Architecture of the Nevada State Capitol, Brewed in Nevada, and Comstock Women: The Making of a Mining Community. He was a member of the 18-member committee charged with shepherding the design for the Nevada quarter, selected in Designer of the NAVA 40 Flag: Sophie Rault, Rostrenen, France The proportions of the NAVA 40 flag are 5:8; it is swallow-tailed to denote a decennial NAVA meeting. The blue field, the silver star in the canton, and the goldenyellow stripe recall the Nevada State Flag. The three bluewhite-red stripes represent NAVA. The four stripes celebrate 40 years of NAVA. The stripes are V-shaped for Vexillology.
