Mormino 5000 Shankland Rd Willoughby, OH Phone: (440) Fax: (440) April, 2014 Dear Senior Class Members and Parents / Guardians, Please help us by reviewing the enclosed information pertinent to Graduation and upcoming events that are important to seniors and their parents. Thank you for your cooperation in preparing your child for his/her future. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS In order to graduate, all seniors must pass a minimum of credits, including several required courses. They must also pass all parts of the Ohio Graduation Test. Seniors and / or parents should contact their guidance counselor if there is a concern about these expectations. FINAL EXAMINATION SCHEDULE Each student should keep in mind that final exams will be given to seniors on Wednesday, May 28 th (periods 1-4) and Thursday, May 29 th (periods 5-8). All exams must be completed by 10 A.M. on May 30, 2014 in order to certify graduation status. In order to pass a full year course, a student must have a minimum total of four (4) points. In addition, a student must: 1. Receive a passing grade for at least one grading period in each semester AND 2. take the final exam 1. Pass both grading periods in the second semester AND 2. take the final exam. OR In order to pass a semester course a student must: 1. Have a minimum total of three (3) points; 2. receive a passing grade for at least one grading period AND 3. take the final exam. This means that each senior must BE PRESENT on both final exam days to take his/her exams. If a final exam is not taken by the student, he/she will fail the course, and graduation may be in jeopardy.
2 CAPS AND GOWNS / SENIOR ANNOUNCEMENTS & NAME CARDS ALL SENIORS MUST HAVE A CAP AND GOWN IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CEREMONY ON SUNDAY, JUNE 8 th 2014! Delivery of caps and gowns will be on Thursday, May 15 th from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the Cafeteria. If you attend a program at another school, please make arrangements to pick up your order at South on May 16 th. Any questions concerning announcements and/or caps and gowns should be directed to Jostens immediately at or rich.kirbus@jostens.com We will also make announcements over the PA to notify students. You must make the final payment in full to receive your order. A very limited number of additional announcements may be available in the Main Office for those who did not place an order. When paying for or purchasing more announcements, payments may be in the form of cash or money order payable to Jostens. Commencement REHEARSAL will be held at The State Theatre on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. - Buses will leave from South at 9:30 A.M. Participation in commencement rehearsal is MANDATORY for all students graduating on June 8, This includes full-time PSEO students, BTS students and students in Career- Tech programs at Mentor, Brush, Euclid and Lakeland Community College. Students who do not have a first period class must report to the gym no later than 8:45 A.M. on this day. Students will board the buses at 9:30 A.M. in the South lot and will be transported to and from rehearsal by school buses. Commencement seating assignments are given out on the buses. Upon returning to South, students will report to the gym for a school-provided lunch. Commencement exercises will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. at the State Theatre. All students are expected to participate unless prior arrangements were made to excuse the student from the program. The commencement exercises will be televised. Commencement Video and Photographs Lifetouch, our official commencement photographer, will have portraits available online at: Events.Lifetouch.com approximately ten days after the ceremony. You can also check our website for the Lifetouch link. Celebrate your achievement with these professional portraits. Studio K will be videotaping the ceremony. Contact them at for ordering information. SENIOR BREAKFAST The traditional senior breakfast will be at 8:30 A.M. on Thursday, June 5 th, 2014 at South High in the Student Commons area. Any senior who requires school bus transportation will arrive at school at the normal time on this day and should report to the Commons. Upon arrival at the breakfast, senior class members will receive their Commencement tickets. Your ticket order form is the last page of this letter. Please return this form to the Main Office no later than Wednesday, May 7, Every student must return a ticket order form even if you are not participating in commencement. There is no fee for the first 4 commencement tickets, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Up to 4 additional tickets per student may be purchased for $5.00 each. If additional tickets are purchased, you will need to submit cash (exact amount) or a check (made payable to Willoughby South High School) when you submit your ticket request form. A final review of the Commencement ceremony and other senior responsibilities will be conducted until approximately 9:30 A.M. At that time, seniors will be permitted to leave.
3 SOCIAL EVENTS / LAST WEEKS OF SCHOOL The students last weeks and events that occur during this time should be completed with enthusiasm, respect, and responsibility. It is also important to note that the school day, as well as all school sponsored social events, are governed by the Willoughby-Eastlake Board of Education Student Code of Conduct. Violations of the code could result in suspension from school and/or denial of participation in commencement exercises. Our intent is to be proactive in nature to promote an enjoyable conclusion to our seniors educational program at Willoughby South High School. Absolutely No Alcoholic Beverages or Tobacco Products or any other Chemical Substances will be permitted at the Prom or After-Prom. Anyone in POSSESSION of or UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO OR DRUGS will be refused admittance to the Prom or After Prom with NO refund. Parents will be telephoned and school disciplinary actions will be taken. Once admitted, any student violating this policy will not be allowed to stay at Prom or After Prom. In either situation, the POLICE will be notified, and the student will be turned over to his/her parents. SENIOR PROM All students and any accompanying guests will be subject to a passive, non-invasive breath analysis conducted by school administrators. Refusal to submit to such analysis will automatically result in refusal of admission to the event. Should the initial test result be positive, the test will be repeated within the time limit recommended by the device manufacturer. Should a refusal occur or the positive result be confirmed, the person will be refused admission to the event and will be referred to the local police for further action. No refunds will be given. The Senior Prom will be held at the Croatian Hall, Lakeshore Blvd., Eastlake, OH, from 7:00 P.M. until 11:00 P.M. on Friday, May 9, A sit down, family-style dinner will be served at 7:30 P.M. and only seniors and their guests are permitted to attend. This year s theme is Old Hollywood. Tickets will be on sale during lunch periods beginning April 28 th and ending May 6 th. May 7 th and 8 th tickets will be $20.00 extra per person. No tickets will be sold on May 9 NO EXCEPTIONS! A list of photo packages and prices will be given with the prom ticket purchase. Photos will be paid for at Prom, and checks should be made payable to Legends Photography. Students are permitted to attend the After Prom without attending the Prom. Individual tickets for After Prom may be purchased for $10. The Senior Prom is the climax of social events for the four years of high school and is the only formal dance sponsored and chaperoned by the school for an entire class and their guests. Tables at the prom will be assigned as tickets are purchased. All non-south guests must fill out and return a guest registration form before tickets may be purchased. These forms are available in the main office and from the senior advisor, Mrs. Menn, in the Attendance Office. Each student will be required to register upon entrance to the hall. Once registered, no one will be permitted to leave the building without the accompaniment of an adult chaperone. Anyone leaving prior to the end of the Prom must sign out and will not be permitted to re-enter. Questions for the Senior Advisor, Mrs. Menn, may be left by calling the main office at or through teri.menn@weschools.org.

The Safe and Sober After Prom will be held at the Lost Nation Sports Park from 11:30 P.M. to 2:30 A.M. (starting on Friday night, May 9 th -- immediately after the Prom). Once students are admitted, they will not be permitted to leave. Use of facilities for volleyball, basketball, fantasy golf, and billiards as well as Monte Carlo, games, prizes and food will be available. The Rebel Moms sponsor this event. School personnel will also be present. Many prizes, which have been donated by area merchants, senior parents and Rebel Moms will be awarded during the After Prom evening. If you are interested in making a donation for After Prom, you can make checks payable to Rebel Moms and mail your donation to Julie Galicz, 5257 Nan Linn Drive, Willoughby, OH If you are interested in helping with the preparation or chaperoning during After Prom, please contact: Julie Galicz at or her at julieg68@gmail.com SENIOR COURSE FEES Please note: Final Official Transcripts may be withheld for outstanding school fees, fines, and/or charges for lost materials. Seniors need to be sure that they have paid all school fees. It is also important that all textbooks, rental calculators, library books, etc., are returned and recorded at the end of the term so that new bills will not be issued. Please check with Ms. Brunetti in the Main Office ( ) if you have any questions about outstanding charges. 5 CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! Please review the following important Graduation Ceremony Notes: Sunday, June 8 th, 2014 State Theatre 1519 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 3:00 P.M. Individual seats for commencement are NOT reserved. Only sections are reserved. Please be sure to check your ticket envelope. Be at the State Theatre no later than 2:30 P.M. and on stage by 2:45 P.M. If you are tardy, you will not be allowed into the auditorium until diplomas are given. At that time you will be escorted by a teacher to the back of the stage. Come dressed in Cap and Gown. (Bathroom facilities are limited) Picture and Video information will be sent to you. No picture taking is allowed during the ceremony. The graduates will leave the State Theatre immediately after the ceremony. Please meet with your family outside at the Euclid Avenue entrance/exit. We want to make your graduation a memorable event. Please be considerate of your fellow students as well as all those who came to honor the graduates. Shouting, whistling, hooting, etc., are not appropriate in this setting. If guests engage in this disruptive behavior thus interfering with other guests opportunities to hear students names, the ceremony will be interrupted, and those individuals responsible for the disruption will be removed. This request form MUST be turned in to the Main Office by May 7 th to receive graduation tickets. Each graduate will receive up to four (4) General Admission tickets, no charge (seating is on a first-come, first-served basis). Valedictorians will receive 4 reserved seat tickets, no charge. Please note: There are no elevators in the State Theatre. There is a section available for persons using wheelchairs.
