1 BEHIND THE NET UMASS WOMEN S TENNIS NEWSLETTER Was a Great Year! I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Review 1 FUMT 2 Roster Additions 2 Upcoming With Your Support Match 4 Schedule & Roster UMASS Tennis 5 Reunion The season was a great one for UMass Tennis as the team finished with a 16-6 record highlighted by an 8-2 conference mark and an undefeated record at home. The season started strong in the fall with doubles and singles titles at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational held at Army. The team went 2-0 in the fall in dual matches with wins over Providence College and UConn. The Spring season started strong with a narrow loss to nationally ranked Brown followed by a good win over conference foe, Saint Joseph s leading to a 4 match winning streak. Other highlights of the spring season included wins over conference rivals Fordham, Temple, and Rhode Island as the team headed into the Atlantic 10 Championships as the #3 seed Team Picture Wins over Dayton and George Washington took the team to the semifinals where they fell to #2 seed Xavier in a hard fought match. Rookie of the Week twice, and Yuliana Motyl and Jessica Podlofsky being named A-10 Players of the Week twice respectively. Motyl and Podlofsky went on to be named to the All-Conference team at the end of the season. In addition, Jocelyn Providence and Yuliana Motyl were named Academic All- Americans. The team wrapped up the season with its Awards Banquet where Arielle Griffin was named team MVP as a freshman, Yuliana Motyl was named most improved, and Julia Comas received the Coaches Award for representing the spirit of UMass Tennis both on and off the court. Other season highlights included Arielle Griffin being named A-10 Team s Year in Review 4 new additions to our All Time Top 10 rec- ITA Northeast Asst. Coach of the Year ords list 2 Academic All-Americans 2 All-Conference Team 2 A-10 Rookie of the Week 1 UMass Athlete of the Week Honors Best win-loss record in the last 8 years Team GPA over 3.0 for the 15th year in a row 4 A-10 Player of the Week

P A G E 2 Friends of UMass Tennis This year we have a new addition to the UMass Tennis family in the form of our new fan club, Friends of UMass Tennis, otherwise known as FUMT.

Some of FUMT s initiatives have included increased support of the team within the Amherst community leading to greater numbers of fans supporting the team at our home matches, making the Bay Road

This new club has been founded and led by George Forman, a local tennis enthusiast. Some of FUMT s initiatives have included increased support of the team within the Amherst community leading to greater numbers of fans supporting the team at our home matches, making the Bay Road Tennis Club a more fan friendly environment, writing player bios for our webpage, and financially supporting our end of the year Team Awards Banquet. Our New Roster Additions Include: Aarzoo Malik (New Delhi, India) Anna Woosley (Sussex, England) Iris Raileanu (Stockholm, Sweden) What s Ahead for and Beyond We have had a great recruiting year. We are bringing in 4 new players who will add talent and depth to a team that is returning 5 starters in both singles and doubles from last season. This new group of players brings with them a great deal of experience competing at the highest level na- tional and internationally. Malik has been ranked as high as #257 in the world as a junior in the ITF rankings, and both Woosley and Raileanu have been ranked consistently in the top ten nationally in their respective countries.
