4 Midlife Job Loss: 5 Tips to Bouncing Back Losing a job at any age can be a trying period. This is especially true during midlife, when you likely have many financial obligations to meet. It can also be very difficult to leave a job that you held for a number of years. You have not only developed a level of expertise, but also must sever long-held relationships. Following are five tips for bouncing back after midlife job loss. Follow them, and you can begin a new career search with a more positive outlook. 1 Allow time to grieve. It is natural to go through some period of grieving, but don t extend it too long. If your career has defined you, it is particularly difficult to be without a job. It can lead to a loss of self-worth and selfconfidence. However, keep in mind that job loss is not personal, in most cases. It often arises from a company s financial difficulties, due either to restructuring or lost revenue. While you will certainly grieve the loss of your job, you also must accept your situation. Keep at the forefront of your mind all the benefits that you will bring to a new employer in terms of skills, abilities and knowledge. This will improve your outlook and enable you jump start the job search process. 2Get your finances in order. You will need to review your financial circumstances, including how much savings you have, as well as what you can expect from your employer in terms of severance pay and outplacement services. You can also research how much you may be eligible to receive through your local unemployment office. Unemployment benefits typically last for a six-month period. You also want to be sure you have continued health insurance through a COBRA program, which allows you to purchase health insurance at reduced costs at a group rate. If necessary, you can always take a temporary job while performing a search for new employment. 3 Use credit cards with caution. Daniela Baker, at CreditDonkey, says you usually don t want to rack up huge credit card debt during periods of unemployment, or submit new credit applications. You can get trapped with an inability to pay them page 4 WorkOne CareerConnect. December 2012/January 2013

5 back, and, too many inquiries can lower your overall credit score. Remember, depending on your next position, your future employer might request a credit report. This may increase your stress level. Indeed, after losing a job, you may want to contact all of your creditors to let them know of your financial situation. Most creditors will arrange a payment plan, as missed payments hurt them as well. 4Organize your time. Begin the search for new employment by laying out the steps needed to land a new job. Create a calendar of activities and devote 30 to 40 hours per week to job search. The more time you put in, the less time it should take to obtain an offer. Create a set of daily goals, such as the number of calls you will make or resumes you will submit. 5Take a proactive stance. Don t feel like a victim. You are now in a position to take full control of your career. Think about the wealth of experience and accomplishments you bring to the table, and use these strengths as the building blocks for your career search. Taking a proactive and positive approach will help you land a new job. You will bring energy and enthusiasm to the search, which will be readily apparent to those employers you meet. You will be creating a perception of yourself in the mind of employers, just as companies create a perception of their products or services in the mind of consumers. In effect, through your job search efforts, you will be creating a brand new you! About the Author Daniela Baker is part of the management team at CreditDonkey.com. 12 10 Resolutions for your Job Search in 2013 Now is the time we reflect on this past year and determine changes we plan on making for the new one. Common resolutions include weight loss, exercise, taking a class, or reconnecting with friends and relatives. However, securing employment is probably the one and only resolution many unemployed individuals will be focusing on for the New Year. Here are 10 resolutions for jobseekers looking to refresh and jump start their employment search: 1 Resume makeover. If your current resume hasn t been getting results, it may be time for a slight overhaul. Be sure to customize according to the job you re going after, because one size doesn t fit all, particularly when you re applying for different jobs. 2Speak up and ask for help! Being human doesn t mean we have all the answers. Asking for help can be uncomfortable, but asking for help is the core of networking and probably the most important thing a person looking for a new job should do. Be sure to let former bosses, neighbors, golf buddies, and even church members know that you are actively looking because your next opportunity can come through a referral from one of these folks. 3Follow through on following up. Your efforts don t stop at networking, customizing your resume for each possible position, or staying on top of job web sites. Following up is something that more people just don t do and it s key! One career coach talked about an employer who interviewed several people and told each candidate who didn t get the job to touch base in a few months because the organization will have new opportunities emerging. After a few months passed, the employer said not one of those individuals followed up. Missed opportunity! 4Train for a new skill. The time is yours and there s probably no better time to take advantage of a training course. Gaining a new skill by taking a workshop, class, or getting a certification will also make you more marketable to a potential employer. If you are currently receiving unemployment benefits, you may qualify for free tuition for classes and certification programs, based on high demand job industries in the region. 5Pump up your social media presence. Increasing your social media presence through sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn can connect you to employers and provide you with up to date job opportunity information. Conducting an audit of your own Facebook profile or LinkedIN page is a good idea. Look through your profile, privacy settings, connections, and content are you minding your manners? Being unprofessional online can ruin your reputation quickly. 6Keep your job search toolbox current and stocked. Be sure your mobile devices and computers are maintained and in working order. Have an interview outfit that is pressed and ready, including a clean shirt, clean tie, hosiery and polished shoes. 7Curb your spending. More money in your pocket will alleviate some stress and desperation during your job hunt. By tracking your spending habits and then reviewing your purchases, you ll be able to determine simple ways to cut back. By cutting out a $3 cup of coffee, a $15 dinner out, and one $5 drink at the bar each week you ll save $1,200 in one year! 8Read and discover. Stay informed of what s happening in your community, within the industry you are interested in, and within the national economy. Visit the local library, search online blogs and news and industry websites to read up on the latest developments and trends. Gaining a little extra know-how always contributes to more confidence and can make you an attractive candidate to a hiring manager. 9Volunteer. Take time to volunteer regularly with a local charity or nonprofit organization. Many times they have work that needs to be done in areas that might interest you, e.g., recruitment and fundraising, data entry, web site development assistance, just to name a few. By volunteering your time during your unemployment period, you re demonstrating your well-roundedness and compassion to future employers not to mention, your motivation to continue working even though it s on a volunteer basis. healthy. Being unemployed and looking for 10Stay work can be stressful which can trigger your immune system to weaken. Take time to eat healthy, drink plenty of water, and stay active even if it s taking a 10 minute walk with the dog daily. And rest up sleep is healing and sleep provides optimal alertness throughout the day. (Resources: The Huntsy Blog, Wordpress) page 12 WorkOne CareerConnect. December 2012/January 2013

13 How to disclose a disability during a job search An issue for people with disabilities who are job searching is when and how they should disclose the disability. Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) makes it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against a qualified applicant with a disability. However, even though discrimination against job seekers is illegal, there are cases there can be silent discrimination and the applicant is rejected regardless. Employers don t have to give a reason for rejecting a candidate, so discrimination is hard to prove, compounding the issue for people with disabilities who are job searching. How best to handle employment issues? Dr. Daniel J. Ryan, author of the Job Search Handbook for People with Disabilities, shares his tips and advice on disclosing disabilities to a potential employer: Tips for Disclosing Disabilities n Be Prepared for Questions. If your disability is visible, your interviewer may have questions about your ability to do the job. You should be prepared for these questions, and you can do that by first making contact with the Job Accommodation Network. n Address Your Disability. If your disability is visible, it is best to address it directly early on in the interview. Because human nature is what it is, a failure to disclose the disability may result in the interviewer going through the motions, trying to be careful not to break any laws, but focusing less on your answers. n Focus on Your Abilities. When addressing your disability, point out that it will not impact your ability to perform the functions of the job, or that it will require only minimal accommodations. Although there is no guarantee, this approach is your best bet at getting the interviewer s attention focused where you want it - on your ability to do the job. n When Your Disability is Not Visible. If your disability is not visible, it is up to you as to when or if you ever disclose it. In most cases, I have advised clients to wait until after an offer is extended to disclose any disability. After you have agreed upon the terms of employment and have established a starting date, you should mention any accommodations you may need so that the employer can have them in place for you when you start.
