4 Why not consider a career in the skilled trades? Most of these skilled trades occupations include above average salaries, challenging work, ability to work almost anywhere, and above average job opportunities. Based on a survey of more than 1,000 employers in 2013 to determine which positions are most difficult to fill and which workers are among the most-wanted, ManPower Group found that for the fourth consecutive year of conducting the survey, the results once again recognized carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and other tool-wielding professionals. Skilled trades occupations can be found in several different sectors: n Construction Sector: includes electricians, carpenters, painters, heavy equipment operators, welders, and related occupations. n Transportation Sector: includes automotive painter, aviation technician, automotive service technician, and related occupations. n Service Sector: includes horticulturists, chefs, florists, and other related occupations. n Manufacturing Sector: includes tool and die makers, industrial electrician, drillers, and related occupations. The past 20 years, we ve been conditioned to believe that a college education is the best way to guarantee a good paying job and decent quality of life. However, in recent years we have seen that college doesn t ensure employment, nor does it guarantee a well-paying job. Based on this shift and what employers are saying, there is a demand for experienced and/or trained individuals in skilled trades. Manpower Group cites that the skilled trades shortage we face could stall future economic growth. What does going into the trades require? People wanting to pursue a career in the skilled trades area need to exhibit important traits that include creativity, analytic skills, mathematical aptitude, general problem solving skills, and more. More specifically, individuals must complete complex tasks that may include analyzing mathematical figures and other data, reading complicated blueprints, and utilizing the latest technology and many other complex tasks on a regular basis. 5 Myths vs. reality of skilled trade careers Not only do tradespeople earn above average incomes, they can complete their studies without overwhelming debt. By taking on an apprenticeship, you ll also have the opportunity to earn while you learn. Now that s smart financial sense! MYTH: Skilled trades are dirty, noisy, and dangerous REALITY: Many people enter the skilled trades because they like hands on work, finding it more rewarding than a desk job. Fortunately, technology and new techniques have changed the face of trades. More and more trade workers work indoors, using state of the art computer equipment and technology. In advanced manufacturing jobs, an increasing amount of mechanical equipment is operated with the aid of computer software. MYTH: Skilled trades are dead end jobs REALITY: With a skilled trade you re not just getting a job, but a career. There are opportunities for advancement within a trade from supervisory positions to management positions. The possibility of owning your own business is always an option too! The level of advancement is up to the capability and desire an individual has. MYTH: Skilled trades are only seasonal jobs REALITY: It used to be that outdoor infrastructure projects were put on hold until after frost and snow left the ground, but now it s not uncommon to see skill workers building roads and buildings during winter months. Although the climate we experience in the Midwest is unpredictable and challenging for skilled workers, today s technology makes it possible to work in all types of weather conditions and temperatures. For example, with advanced masonry and concrete technology, it s possible to pour and cure even in below freezing temperatures. By adding propane heating and insulated tarps construction sites can create practical and productive work environments. Technology has even contributed to specialty clothing worn by trades worker, helping them get through a cold winter season. MYTH: Skilled trades don t pay well REALITY: Many trades earn above the national average. According to EMSI Analyst, specialty trade contractors in Northwest Indiana earned on average $73,416, which included their supplemental benefits. And depending on the trade, position and opportunities for overtime, earnings can higher. Legislated health and safety requirements enforce strict regulation on levels of noise and exposure to hazardous materials on job sites. The enforcement of additional workplace safety standards is common practice today. MYTH: Skilled trades are overly physically demanding REALITY: Yes, there are physical aspects to many trades, but the nature of the hands-on and physical side is exactly why skilled tradespeople love their work! They d rather be working hands-on and be out and about than sitting in an office. Remember that there is diversity in the tasks involved with trades work. From designing concepts and blueprints, to planning and project management, to administrative functions. Becoming technology literate is also important. Tradespeople need to learn how to operate the increasing amount of computer software and mechanical equipment that is incorporated to their jobs. The line between white-collar and blue-collar work has become blurred and skilled trades today requires more brains than brawn. MYTH: Women do not have the physical strength to perform skilled trades REALITY: Physical work does not only imply strength. Skilled trades require dexterity, stamina, good hand-eye coordination and balance all are attributes that women and men alike possess. Resources: eca.gov.nt.ca WorkOne CareerConnect. Youth that have barriers to employment are finding an even harder time securing employment. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998 enacted a youth program serving eligible low-income youth, ages 16-21, who face barriers to employment. WorkOne offices throughout Northwest Indiana provide WIA services to at-risk youth. Goals of the WIA Youth Program: The first goal of the program is for those youth in high school or postsecondary training to complete their education and obtain a diploma, certification, or degree. The second goal is placement into employment or post-secondary education. The third goal of the program is to increase literacy and numeracy skills for those who are basic skills deficient. The final goal is to provide them 12 months of follow up services. Youth Services and Future Works: Youth staff works with high school seniors transitioning to post-secondary education. The Future Works program assists in career exploration, applying to post-secondary institutions, and financial aid resources through a series of workshops. Successful participants in Future Works receive scholarships and transition to post-secondary education when completed. Work Experience: Many youth lack a work history and the skills needed for successful employment. A youth is placed at a worksite for temporary employment. During the work experience a youth learns more about an actual work environment while gaining job skills. Work Ready: Youth gain skills needed to enter the workforce through a series of work ready workshops including business etiquette, work habits, resume development, and interviewing skills. Dorwynn immediately became more receptive and agreed to follow through on the many steps and suggestions made by the Career Advisor. He attended WorkOne workshops on effective communication skills, building a resume, preparing for the job interview, just to name a few. While attending workshops and checking in with his Career Advisor, Dorwynnn diligently continued with his job search.
