4 Career and Technical Education Opportunites Skilled trades and apprenticeships lead to high demand and high wage jobs in Northwest Indiana Northwest Indiana wasn t built from behind a desk. It took the hands of countless hard-working men and women to build the vast industrial complexes, commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, interstates, highways, and transportation systems that define the region. As our economy continues to grow and our infrastructure ages, construction and maintenance projects here in northwest Indiana flourish. This presents lucrative opportunities for those interested in pursuing a career in construction industry. We encourage you to explore the different crafts and find out which trade career is right for you. You will find that each craft performs work that is highly technical and extremely specialized. All trade careers are built on a solid foundation of classroom education and on-the-job training. This is commonly referred to as an apprenticeship. What is a 21st Century Registered Apprenticeship? The United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship defines Registered Apprenticeship as a unique, flexible training system which combines job related technical instruction with structured on-thejob learning experiences. Most apprentices begin employment day one, with incremental wage increases as they advance and become more proficient on the job. Apprenticeships range from 1 6 years the majority being 4 years. Similar to a college internship or residency, success is realized through hard work and perseverance. Advancement is achieved through demonstrated proficiencies in both academic and field performance. Most apprentice training courses are tuition free. Once the apprenticeship period is completed and the student passes all of the required coursework, he or she will have the technical skills necessary to be recognized as a master craft professional. Most students will even receive a college degree upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program. The work of a skilled construction professional is often physically demanding. Apprentices and trade professionals can expect to do a sizable amount of lifting, climbing, and crouching. Working in confined spaces, extreme heat, sub-freezing temperatures, or working at excessive heights is typical for a construction professional. Every apprenticeship program thoroughly trains students in safety and accident prevention. In fact, Northwest Indiana s professional construction industry has nearly 15 times fewer accidents than the national rate according to a 2014 study. Apprenticeship programs are not for everyone. Admittance into an apprenticeship can be difficult, applicants must be determined. Only select individuals who demonstrate the special blend of both academic and mechanical aptitude will qualify. Only the best applicants are accepted! n Source: webuildnwi.com page 4 WorkOne CareerConnect. January February 2016

8 PlaNNiNG on applying for college? NEED financial aid? Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ) is the first step toward getting federal aid for college, career school or graduate school. Answers to important questions about FAFSA Why should I fill out the FAFSA? If you don t fill out the FAFSA, you could be missing out on a lot of financial aid! We ve heard a number of reasons students think they shouldn t complete the FAFSA. Here are a few: n I (or my parents) make too much money, so I won t qualify for aid. n Only students with good grades get financial aid. n The FAFSA is too hard to fill out. n I m too old to qualify for financial aid. If you think any of these statements apply to you, you may be very wrong. If you think any of these statements apply to you, then you should read Myths About Financial Aid (page 4). The reality is, EVERYONE should fill out the FAFSA! When do I fill out the FAFSA? The FAFSA becomes available in early January each year, and there are different deadlines for different programs and those can be found at fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines For the year, you can apply between Jan. 1, 2015, and June 30, However, there are a few federal student aid programs that have limited funds, so be sure to apply as soon as you can. Be sure to check the school s website or contact its financial aid office. School deadlines are usually early in the year (often in February or March). Other financial aid Some programs other than government or school aid require that you file the FAFSA. For instance, you can t get certain private scholarships unless you re eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and you can t find out whether you re eligible for a Pell Grant unless you file a FAFSA. If the private scholarship s application deadline is in early to mid-january, you ll need to submit your FAFSA before that deadline. As you can see, it s a good idea to file the FAFSA as soon as it s available so you don t miss out on anything. You have to fill out the FAFSA every year you re in school in order to stay eligible for federal student aid. Can I get an early estimate of my aid? You sure can! If you re not ready to file a FAFSA, you can use FAFSA4caster to estimate your federal student aid. did you know the U.S. Department of Education and their Federal Student Aid division distributes more than $150 billion in grants, loans, and work-study funds each year, but you have to complete the FAFSA to see if you can get any of that money. How do I fill out the FAFSA? There are several ways to file: n Online at is faster and easier than using paper. n If you need a paper FAFSA, you can download a PDF FAFSA or order a paper FAFSA. n Ask the financial aid office at your college or career school if you can file it there. Some schools will use special software to submit your FAFSA for you. n Need some tips on filling out the FAFSA? We ve got them! Just go to studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out What happens after I fill out the FAFSA? Applying isn t the last step; your FAFSA has to be processed, and then you get an Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which your college or career school uses to figure out how much aid you can get. Find out more about what happens after you fill out the FAFSA, including how aid is calculated and when and how you ll get your aid. page 8 WorkOne CareerConnect. January February 2016
