Leadership today is like guiding a hang-glider, where focus and awareness, immediate and slight course corrections, and agility are key. In order to lead change and growth, great leaders must know themselves and their teams, assess what the situation requires, and take action with creativity, confidence, presence and agility. Join us and experience a dynamic leadership model, grounded in evidence from the last three decades of theory and research on leadership development, emotional intelligence, and positive psychology. Using this model, learn how your strengths, emotional agility, and physical presence can increase your resilience and impact as a leader. 2 Thursday, 21 April 2016 (DAY 1) 1:15p 2:30p Panel Presentation (Memorial Theater) THE ART OF COMING BACK AND LETTING GO Our lives consist of the good times and the bad times. Because of our military training and experience, we are expected to overcome hardships quickly and easily. However, no amount of training can prepare you for everything life throws at you. How do you come back from tragedy? How do you deal with life when everything in your world has suddenly changed? How do you move forward and thrive? Hear from our amazing panelists on how they overcame hardship, let go of their past, adjusted to their newly redefined normal, and became beacons of hope for others. Moderator: Lieutenant Commander (S) Jessika M. A. Rovell, USN, Director, JMAR Unlimited Panelists: Lieutenant Colonel Cherrie Davis, USA (Ret), Change Management Leader & Coach; Maureen August Short, Director of Curriculum, Army Resiliency Directorate; Deborah White, Mother of Lieutenant Ashley White; Captain Christy Wise, USAF, HC-130 Pilot and Founder, One Leg Up On Life; Colonel Deanna Won, USAF (Ret), Speaker, Leadership Consultant & Holistic Health Coach, Founder Keynotes to Life 2:30p- 3:00p AFTERNOON KEYNOTE ADDRESS (Memorial Theater) Vice Admiral Raquel Bono, USN, Director, Defense Health Agency 3:00p 3:30p AFTERNOON BREAK WITH REFRESHMENTS (Memorial Gallery) 3:30p 4:45p Panel Presentation (Memorial Theater) ASHLEY S WAR: THE HUMAN STAKES OF PIONEERING CHANGE ON THE BATTLEFIELD In 2010 the U.S. Army Special Operations Command created Cultural Support Teams (CSTs), a pilot program that placed women on the battlefield alongside Army Rangers, Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and other special operations teams on sensitive combat missions in Afghanistan. Their intent was for women to access places and people that had remained out of reach and to build relationships woman to woman in ways that male soldiers in a conservative, traditional country could not. Though (then) officially banned from combat, these female soldiers heeded the call to serve alongside America s finest fighters and earned their place in history as combat soldiers and pioneers who helped to redefine battlefield operations and combat exclusion policies. They never sought to prove a point, only to serve with purpose on a mission that mattered alongside the best. Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, the author of Ashley s War, will lead a panel discussion comprised of the members of CST-2, a unit of women selected from across the Army who forged an unbreakable bond of friendship born of war. Join us to hear their stories about the complexities of combat, the very human stakes of their battlefield successes and of the remarkable hero at its heart: First Lieutenant Ashley White. Moderator: Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations Honored Guest: Deborah White, Mother of Lieutenant Ashley White Featured Former CST Members: Meghan Curran; Amy Sexauer; Rachel Washburn Page 2 of 6
