Girl Scout troops formig at APG ACS BIRTHDAY By RACHEL PONDER APG News Girls i kidergarte through twelfth grade are ivited to joi Girl Scout troops formig o Aberdee Provig Groud North (Aberdee) ad APG South (Edgewood). Aie Brock, a lifetime Girl Scout ad presidet of the istallatio s Military, Civilia ad Spouses Club, is headig the effort. She s hopig to get both troops started by mid September. We oly eed five girls to start a troop, ad troops ca be multi-level. As the umber of participats icrease, so will the umber of troops, which Brock says ca the be divided by age group. Brock has bee spreadig the word throughout the APG commuity ad promotig the beefits of joiig. First o the why-joi list is that the program grows girls strog. It expads a girl s abilities by buildig leadership skills ad kowledge, she said. It gives girls a chace to explore areas of their iterest, which ca help them i their school life, ad later i their work life. Whe a Girl Scout receives the highest Girl Scout award, the Gold Award, it sets them apart, explaied Brock. I have heard stories of employers choosig Gold Award recipiets over other cadidates with similar qualificatios. 2 2 APG News July 28, 2011 OPINION Reservist, mom, jouralist talks about behaviorial health issue Some may woder how a civilia jouralist would have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or ay other behavioral health issue ad be able to relate it to what service members ad their Families go through. I ca relate better tha some would thik. Not oly am I a Army civilia, but I am a staff sergeat i the Army Reserve, a military spouse ad a mother. I ve deployed three times, oce to Kosovo ad twice to Iraq. I was treated ad am still uder a bit of medical care for adjustmet disorder. It s ot quite PTSD, but may of the sigs symptoms are similar. Does havig a behavioral health issue make me weak? Not at all. I had o clue what it meat my first deploymet whe I was oly 19. My secod deploymet I was 23 ad a sigle mom. I came back i time to celebrate my 25th birthday ad my daughter s 2d. I refused for a while to believe I had much of a issue. My biggest issue was I was agry, I sapped at people for little thigs ad I would just breakdow ad cry for o apparet reaso. After a few complete breakdows at work, I fially got the help I eeded. I kew for this most recet deploymet if I recogized aythig I did from last time, I would t wait six moths or more agai to get help. This deploymet was rough from the start. My the fiacé deployed to Afghaista ad I was o my way to Iraq. I heard about the thigs they were goig through ad felt guilty. They were o a remote base, did t have much ad were i regular cotact with the eemy. There I was i Baghdad. I kew almost every day I could easily get a shower (except whe the water ra out), I could walk to the diig facility ay time I wated, I had a small post exchage I could go to ad so much more. Not log after I arrived i Iraq, my gradfather died. Not log after that My biggest issue was I was agry, I sapped at people for little thigs ad I would just break dow ad cry for o apparet reaso. After a few complete breakdows at work, I fially got the help I eeded. my the fiacé was hurt. He lost most of his hearig ad suffered a traumatic brai ijury. He fought to stay out with his troops, but evetually the docs wo out ad he was set home early to get the treatmet he eeded. Whe I came home o rest ad recuperatio, we decided to o loger wait ad to get married. Our Families supported the decisio. It was odd beig home. I was learig to deal with some of what he was goig through ad yet hoestly tryig ot to get wrapped up too much i it because I would soo be goig back to Iraq ad had a job to fiish. The hardest part was early o ad he did t always get my ame right. He kew who I was, but ames were t a strog poit. He started callig me more by the ickame he gave me tha by my ame. After I retured, I had eve more issues. I was tryig ot to stress too much about ot beig there for him. The I got a from my little sister. I wated to call home as soo as I read it, but I had to wait. Waitig out the clock was impossible. She iformed me the doctors foud a mass i her head ad that it was bleedig ito itself. She s had surgery sice I ve retured home ad I got to be there to support her through that, but she ow has other problems as a result of the surgery ad it will be at least six moths before they thik she will be ready to retur to work. It was all just addig up. While still i Iraq, I had breakdows at the office. I was escorted to the chaplai s office by oe of the sergeats first class i my uit. I met with the chaplai at times ad I was talkig with combat stress. I was still fie with goig out o missios. I maaged to keep it all together well ad focus o my job. It was durig the dow times that were hardest ad my thoughts would start racig o all the what ifs ad feelig guilty about ot beig there for my husbad ad my sister. It got worse at the ed of the deploymet. It was close to ie moths ago, October 26, I had goe dow to Basra to cover some differet stories. My last oe was a missio where I was with a group of U.S. ad Iraqi soldiers escortig the State Departmet for a agricultural project. We ever made it to our destiatio. After all, the bad guys did t care the U.S. called a official ed to a leadig role i combat operatios i September. I was ridig with four other Soldiers i the lead Mie Resistat Ambush Protected vehicle. I was i the back talkig with oe of the Soldiers. Next thig you Crowds drive me batty. I do t always feel like I fit ito the civilia world. Some days I just do t care ad have to force myself to be motivated. Havig a 6-year-old at home seriously helps me to be motivated eve whe I do t wat to. hear the boom ad the vehicle fills with smoke ad dust. You hear the guer scream. Is it from pai or the adrealie rush? I hoestly for a secod or two was t sure what happeed. The other Soldier i the back was the oe who said out loud we d bee hit. It was a improvised explosive device - a explosively formed projectile, better kow as a EFP. The guer dropped ad was held dow because he wated to get back up. The secod you saw his face we wodered if he was bured. He just had that much soot ad dirt o his face. The rest of the covoy had o clue what our status was. We had lost commuicatios. It seemed like a eterity, but I m sure it was t log util the radios were back up ad we could commuicate. The rest of the covoy moved i to secure the area. Everyoe who eeded to be cotacted was. It was the Iraqi Police, the Iraqi Army, the Iraqi Explosive Ordace teams who were our first ad mai respoders. I was amazed. It took a icidet like that, but I got to see first-had how the traiig my fellow service members had provided them was payig off. All of us i the vehicle walked away from the icidet. I have leared though that whiplash seriously sucks ad that you re expected ad pretty much allowed to be agry after someoe tries to blow you up. I ve bee home sice December. For a while thigs were t easy, but they are costatly gettig better. I m still agry more ofte tha I would like, but usually at myself. Crowds drive me batty. I do t always feel like I fit i to the civilia world. Some days I just do t care ad have to force myself to be motivated. Havig a 6-year-old at home seriously helps me to be motivated eve whe I do t wat to. I hate drivig, but do it because I have to. I get mad at myself for this all botherig me because I kow others who dealt with more, but I kow it has seriously phased me ad does ot make me weaker. I ve bee gettig the help I eed. It was easier this time to admit it. I also kew better of where to go. There is aoymous couselig through Chaplais, Military Family Life Cosultats, Vet Ceters ad more. They oly let someoe kow if you are a dager to yourself or others. Medical providers also offer help. I get help through the Veteras Affairs medical system. There are so may optios. Do t be afraid to get help. Admittig to havig a issue does t make you weak. It does t make you a failure. It does t make you less of a Soldier. Admittig you eed help meas you are truly livig up to the Army Values ad you are tryig to be Army Strog. I shake as I write this. It all still gets to me more tha I admit. Some days are worse tha others, but it is gettig better. I am doig my job as a Soldier, wife, mother ad civilia. I may have a behavioral health issue, but I do ot let it stop me. For more iformatio, call your Kirk Health Beefits Advisor at Usig meds beyod 6-moth dispese could ed career By BRANDY GILL Carl R. Darall Army Medical Ceter Public Affairs Soldiers who take their prescriptio medicatios six moths after dispesatio ad pop positive o a urialysis test could see their careers go dow the toilet. Chages made to Army Medical Commad regulatio 40-51, issued by the surgeo geeral via a All Army Activities message dated Feb. 23, 2011, aouced that cotrolled substaces could oly be used up to six moths from the prescriptio issuace date. This aoucemet may seem mior, but it could potetially be a career-eder for ay Soldier who has prescriptio medicies, said Col. Kimberly Keslig, deputy commader for cliical services at Carl R. Darall Army Medical Ceter, or CRDAMC. All it would take is a positive urialysis test. A positive urialysis that occurs after the prescriptio dispesig date may result i a o legitimate use fidig ad subsequet Uiformed Code of Military Justice actio, Keslig said. This is a major chage from how positive urialysis tests due to prescribed cotrolled substaces were hadled i the past, said Lt. Col. Gwedoly Thompso, CRDAMC s pharmacy chief. Previously, if a Soldier had a positive urialysis test, all they had to do was preset their medicatio profile showig they were prescribed the cotrolled substace drug withi that year ad a valid use would be assumed, she added. But ow, after six moths from the dispesig date, it s o loger cosidered valid use. Some of the most commoly prescribed cotrolled substaces dispesed at CRDAMC pharmacies are: Percocet, Oxy- Coti, morphie, Vicodi, Tyleol #3, Xaax, Ambie ad Luesta amog others icludig geerics that Soldiers should be aware of too. Ayoe who receives a cotrolled substace medicatio from a CRDAMC pharmacy should be fully aware of it before they leave the facility Keslig said. Cotrolled substace medicatios are classified by the Drug Eforcemet Agecy as a medicatio with the potetial for abuse, she said. These medicatios are easily idetifiable whe dispesed at your pharmacy because a sigature for receipt will be required ad a pharmacist will cousel you that the medicatio is a cotrolled substace. CRDAMC pharmacists are also hadig out letters to prescriptio holders o the chage i policy ad it icludes a list of the most commoly prescribed cotrolled substaces, Thompso said. I additio to advisig Soldiers o the policy chage, prescriptio bottles will be marked with distict red warig labels which states, Do Not Use six moths after dispesig date. May result i NO LEGITI- MATE USE o urialysis. Providers ad pharmacies are limitig prescriptio quatities for these types of medicatios to a 30-day supply maximum CRDAMC pharmacists are also hadig out letters to prescriptio holders o the chage i policy ad it icludes a list of the most commoly prescribed cotrolled substaces. for acute coditios too. However, Soldiers with a chroic coditio ca still get the medicatios they eed, but istead of oe large prescriptio that would last for several moths, they will ow get a iitial 30-day supply with up to five 30-day refills. Providers ca still write 90- day prescriptios for cotrolled substace medicatios that treat attetio-deficit hyperactivity disorder, ad deployig Soldiers will cotiue to receive a six-moth supply of their medicatios before they deploy. Eve though providers ad pharmacies are required to follow these ew rules, resposibility still falls o Soldiers to make sure they are i compliace Thompso said. We all have medicie cabiets or shelves full of prescriptio medicatios, she said. Soldiers ted to keep medicatios that are for pai if they do t use it all iitially. A year later the Soldier has trouble with pai agai ad goes to the medicie cabiet ad grabs the cotrolled substace, she explaied. That s what s goig to get them i trouble. They have to read the labels ad pay very close attetio to the dispese date. Soldiers ca avoid this situatio all together by safely disposig of the prescribed medicatio oce the six-moth grace period eds. Accordig to the U.S. Food ad Drug Admiistratio s website, there are several differet ways to appropriately get rid of uused medicatios. Oe way would be to look for medicie take-back programs. Aother way would be to mix the medicatio with upalatable substaces like kitty litter, put the mixture i a sealable plastic bag ad throw it away with household trash. Highly dagerous medicatios, like OxyCoti, morphie ad Percocet should be flushed dow a toilet or sik istead the website says. There are a small umber of medicies that may be especially harmful ad, i some cases, fatal i a sigle dose if they are used by someoe other tha the perso the medicie was prescribed for, the website states. Whe you dispose of these medicies dow the sik or toilet, they caot be accidetally used by childre, pets, or ayoe else. Girl Scout ews Cotiued from Page 1 to their commuity through service projects. It is as popular as ever with the latest treds elevatig charcoal ad gas grills ito complete outdoor kitches with the latest high-tech features, gadgets, ad accessories. But it still has its ow set of hazards. It is importat to pla ad use commo sese before the burer is lit or a sigle hamburger hits the grill. A fu barbecue is goig to be a safe barbecue with o oe beig hurt or ijured. Accordig to the Natioal Fire Protectio Associatio (NFPA), although gas grills are used roughly 1.5 times as ofte as charcoal grills, gas grills are ivolved i five times as may fires. Four of every five grills ivolved i home fires (81 percet) were fueled by gas while 17 percet used charcoal or other solid fuel. Durig , U.S. fire departmets respoded to a estimated average of 154,700 home structure fires ivolvig cookig equipmet per year. These fires caused a aual average of 460 civilia deaths, 4,850 civilia ijuries, ad $724 millio i property. Whether grillig with gas or charcoal, there s always a chace of gettig bured. So use commo sese ad pre-plaig to help prevet ijuries ad keep the followig tips i mid whe usig grills: Read the ower s maual. This ca be doe by callig i the Aberdee Area ad i the Edgewood Area. Never use kerosee or gasolie to start a fire, oly use a approved charcoal lighter fluid to start a charcoal-fired grill, but remember to ever add lighter fluid whe it is already burig. Whe lightig up the gas grill, use the 10 to 5 rule. If the grill does ot start withi 10 secods, tur off the gas, leave the lid ope ad give it 5 miutes before you try agai. Doig so ca lead to carbo mooxide poisoig ad deadly cosequeces. Set the grill i a ope vetilated area that is away from high traffic routes, buildigs, overhead combustible surfaces, dry leaves, or brush. Keep grill stable. Whe usig a barbecue grill, be sure that all parts of the uit are firmly i place ad that the grill is stable ad caot be tipped over. Never move a hot grill, it s too easy to stumble or drop it, ad serious burs could result. Propae grills. Use oly equipmet with the label of a recogized testig laboratory ad the check the gas cylider hose for leaks before usig it for the first time each year. A light soap ad water solutio applied to the hose will quickly reveal escapig propae by releasig bubbles. If you determie your grill has a gas leak, by the smell or the soapy bubble test, ad there is o flame, tur off the gas tak ad grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professioal before usig it agai. If you should smell gas while cookig, immediately get away from the grill ad call the fire departmet. Follow electric codes. If electrically-operated accessories like rotisseries are used, be sure they are properly grouded i accordace with local codes. Electrical cords should be placed away from walkways or high traffic areas where people ca trip over them. Use log-hadled utesils. Use barbecue utesils with log hadles (forks, togs, etc.) to avoid burs ad splatters. Wear safe clothig. Do t wear loose clothig such as hagig shirt tails, frills, or apro strigs that ca catch fire, ad use flame-retardat mitts whe adjustig hot vets. Keep the fire uder cotrol. To put out flare-ups, either elevate the cookig grid that the food is o, spread the coals out evely, or adjust the cotrols to lower the temperature. If ecessary to cotrol the flames, douse them with a light spray of water. Be prepared to extiguish the flames by usig a fire extiguisher, a bucket of sad, or a garde hose. Use a grill pad or splatter mat beeath the grill. These aturally heat resistat pads are usually made of lightweight composite cemet or plastic ad ca protect a deck or patio from ay grease that misses the drip pa. Properly dispose of the coals. Do t coduct activity ear the grill whe i use ad ever leave a grill uatteded oce it is lit or after cookig; remember that the grill body ca remai hot up to a hour after beig used. Cover cuts ad other ijuries usig waterproof badages or by wearig latex gloves ad use the tips listed below to keep your food safe ad healthy to avoid food cotamiatio durig your cookouts. Avoid cross-cotamiatio. Cross-cotamiatio occurs whe bacteria from oe food item is trasferred to aother food item, ofte by way of uwashed cuttig boards or coutertops, as well as kives ad other kitche tools or uwashed hads. For example, cross cotamiatio could occur if a cook cuts raw chicke o a cuttig board ad the later slices fresh tomatoes o the same board without washig it first. Never place cooked food o a plate that held ucooked meat, poultry, or seafood. Clea everythig! Bacteria ca spread throughout the food preparatio area ad get oto hads, cuttig boards, kives, dish cloths, spoges ad coutertops. Dish cloths ca be a ideal eviromet for bacterial growth ad multiply so cosider chagig dish cloths ofte ad machie wash them i hot water. Keep your grill clea by removig grease or fat build up from the grill. **Always wash hads with soap before preparig or servig food ad after hadlig raw meat, poultry, ad seafood; usig the washroom; seezig or coughig or touchig pets. Cook thoroughly. I geeral, foods are properly cooked whe they are heated for a log eough time ad at a high eough temperature to kill the bacteria that cause food bore illess. Usig a meat thermometer is oe way to measure the iteral temperature of cooked meat ad poultry to make sure it is cooked thoroughly. A cookig temperature chart ca specify cookig time ad safe temperatures for cuts of poultry, pork, ad beef. If a meat thermometer is ot available, cook util juices ru clear. Separate raw food from cooked. Bacteria ca easily spread from raw food to cooked food, whe preparig raw meat, keep the food (ad juice) away from ready-to-eat foods. It is always a good idea to store raw meat, poultry, ad seafood items o the bottom shelf of the refrigerator to prevet the juices from drippig oto other foods ad to use oe cuttig board for raw meat ad aother board for salads or fruit. Keep it cold. Cold temperatures of 40 degrees Fahreheit or 4 degrees Celsius or below (refrigerator) ad -18 degrees Celsius (freezer) slow dow the growth of micro-orgaisms. Keepig food cold is oe of the best ways to reduce the risk of food bore illess. Never defrost food at room temperature; it is always best to thaw food i the refrigerator. For a quick thaw, place the food item i a airtight bag ad put it i cold water or thaw i the microwave.
