3 Concept The End of the Beginning III is a campaign day representing an overview of the conflict in the Mediterranean between 1940 and from Libya and Crete, to Tunisia and the invasion of Italy. In this third EotB event, the format will be changed somewhat, based on feedback from previous years: games will be extended to 2hrs 15mins and players will be grouped into three separate theatres in an effort to ensure nicely themed matchups (given that we have broadened to take in the Italy campaign up to Cassino). The priority this year is to try to ensure great games for all players. The event uses an Axis Vs Allies setup, with players divided into three theatre pools, representing different stages of the Mediterranean conflict: 1) Crete (1941, Operation Mercury and the Resistance) 2) North Africa ( , Egypt and Libya to Tunisia) 3) Italy ( , Sicily to Cassino) Each theatre will have a set number of tables and equal players of Axis and Allied forces on either side. Individual prizes at the end will reward thematic armies, painting and sportsmanship we value these elements over WAAC attitudes. 3

4 Forces/Lists 1250 points, 1-2 Infantry Platoons OR 1-2 Armoured Platoons (no mixing these to avoid buying transports!) Theatre Selectors - all forces must be constructed using one of the following theatre selectors. Armoured platoons must also only use units from one selector. [Dave Hunter s and Sam s lists are to be found via the Resources tab at downorder.com] Britain/Commonwealth: Raiders!, East Africa, Operation Compass, Behind Enemy Lines, Operation Lightfoot, Tunisia, Monte Cassino, The Indian Army (Duel in the Sun), Non Vi Sed Arte (Dave Hunter s LRDG list), Tatou! Tatou! (Dave Hunter s Maori list), Stirling s SAS (Sam s list) Germany: Rommel Triumphant, Operation Mercury, Rommel s Defeat, Defence of Italy, German Fallschirmjager (Duel in the Sun), The Herman Goring Division (Duel in the Sun), Ritterlich im Krieg (Dave Hunter s DAK army list), Fallen in die Hö lle Descent into Hell (Dave Hunter s Crete invasion army lists) Italy: The War in Africa, The Defence of Sicily France: The Defence of Vichy, 1 st Free French Brigade (BA Alliance PDF) US: Operation Torch, Kasserine Pass, El Guettar, Rommel s Defeat, Operation Husky, Operation Avalanche, Cassino, Anzio The Road to Rome Partisans (Crete): Resistance Greece: The Battle of Greece (I ll also allow mixed Greek/Commonwealth lists for the defence of Crete). 4

5 Poland: no appropriate selector use the generic selector to build a list suitable for a specific battle, such as Tobruk or Monte Cassino Units from Theatre Books and Additional Units PDF are allowed (if they can be taken in one of the selectors above); Warplanes are allowed; special characters and war reporters are not. Airborne Infantry Platoons (such as one constructed from the Fallschirmjager selector) may use the Combat Jump rules if the unit performed a jump in the given theatre. In the unlikely event that a list is deemed overpowered, a player may be politely asked to rethink it; this event is about playing enjoyable, historically themed games - not grinding an opponent into the ground. Scenarios/Tables Tables are set up for specific missions with pre-placed objectives, so the table you end up on determines the mission you play. Each table will also specify which side is attacking/defending (if any). There will be a mixture of sparse and dense terrain across the tables, some with good roads and buildings, others with limited cover and no roads. The specific scenarios will be confirmed closer to the day, but players should prepare to attack and defend in missions with objectives and those without. Victory 3/1/0 Tournament Points will be awarded for a Win/Draw/Loss in each round, as well as 1TP awarded for a secondary objective on each table (claimed in the same way as the Key Positions objectives). The team with the highest TP total after three games will win. 5

6 Prizes will be awarded for the following: Best Army/Painted/Opponent Matchups and Commanders Players are matched ahead of the event and will be able to see who their opponents will be for each round. This will keep things moving along and minimise delays between rounds. It also allows us try and arrange the best historical matchups possible on the most fitting boards. Italy Theatre Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Table 1 (Sicily) Axis1 V Allied1 Axis2 V Allied3 Axis3 V Allied2 Table 2 (Anzio) Axis2 V Allied2 Axis3 V Allied1 Axis1 V Allied3 Table 3 (Cassino) Axis3 V Allied3 Axis1 V Allied2 Axis2 V Allied1 Each table will specify whether the Axis/Allied player will attack or defend. High Priority at some during the day, before a round begins and before the matchups for that round are decided, each side MUST designate one game to be the High Priority Mission for the day. Their commander writes this down secretly and shares it with his players and the TO. Whichever side wins on this table will receive double TPs. Note: there may be other small changes to the format. 6
