3 Greetings! YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS SINCE 1929: HISTORY & VISION 2030 The history of Yonsei University Press dates back to 1929 when the Press was founded in as the Yonhi College Press. The Press obtained the formal approval from the Ministry of Education to establish Yonsei University Press in We will reach the 90 th anniversary of its foundation in Yonsei University Press (YUP) has embraced, as its mission, the obligation to organize the academic heritage and traditions of Yonsei in a systematic way, also to make these scholastic accomplishments more accessible at home and abroad. YUP is currently expanding to prepare for the emergence of mobile contents, as well as continuing the publication of quality books for domestic and foreign University education. Under the motto Vision 2030, YUP aims to be one of the top 10 University Presses in the world by the year 2030, when Yonsei celebrates the 101 st anniversary of YUP s first publication in 1929 for the first version of Urimalbon by Choi Hyun-Bae. YUP privileges authors with an incentive system for outstanding academic publication and educational books, and also securing a widening range of readership through the establishment of the Press family brand, Cheongsong Media. YUP also has made more expeditious systems available such as the Google Books Program, in order to serve worldwide customers in a better manner. The copyright to Korean language textbooks, including Hanguk eo Series (Korean Language Series older version), is exported to China (Beijing World Publishing Corporation / 世界图书出版公司北京公司 ) YUP becomes a self-governed organization. 4. 8 Yonsei University Press Since 1929 : History & VISION s 1950s Foundation of Yonhi College Press, the precursor of Yonsei University Press 1920s The Beginning of Yonhi College Press: bearing the mission of the times Choi Hyun-Bae, the first chief director of Yonhi College Press, served as a professor of Yonhi College during the period of Japanese occupation. Even under Japanese oppression of the Korean language, he established Yonhi College Press and published, for the first time, the first version of Urimalbon, the compiled-collection of teaching materials for the Korean language and literature, in 13 th April, This book was consisted of his handwritten academic manuscripts and research documents created with students. Urimalbon, published by Yonhi College Press, had a profound effect on the exclusive use of Hangeul and horizontal writing started by Yonjun Times (the precursor of Yonsei Chun Chu college newspaper), in Yonhi College Press was the driving force behind Yonhi College s existence as a stronghold of vigorous research and scholastic affection on the Korean language and literature, during the dark period of Japanese occupation. The history of Yonsei University Press (YUP) began on April, 1929 when Yonhi College Press was established. Shortly after its establishment, Yonhi College Press published the first version of Urimalbon, the compiled-collection of <Sorigal> by Choi Hyun-Bae on April, 1929 and published Joseon Umoon Yungoo (The Study of the Written and Spoken Language of Joseon) the next year (1930). Earlier than Joseon Eomunhak hoebo (The Bulletin for the Study of Writing and Language of Joseon), Joseon Umoon Yungoo was the embodiment of the results of investigations of literature and linguistics. It also indicates YUP s effort during the period of Japanese occupation to preserve Korean literature and language. first version of Urimalbon (Choi Hyun-Bae), 1929 Joseon Eomunhak hoebo, 1930 After years of social change the national liberation from Japan, the Korean war and followed educational legislation Decree on Standards for the Establishment of Universities and Colleges by the presidential executive order, in 1957, Severance Medical College and Hospital and Yonhi University merged to form Yonsei University. Accordingly, Yonhi Daehakkyo Chulpanbu (Yonhi University Press) was renamed Yonsei Daehakkyo Chulpanbu (Yonsei University Press). Yonsei University Press (YUP) was primarily focused on the self-production of university textbooks and the publication of academic, educational books for Yonsei Univeristy students. YUP also aimed to contribute to the academic progress of Yonsei University by presenting Yonsei s scholastic achievements to the public through research papers and books. 8 YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS

9 YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS SINCE 1929: HISTORY & VISION 2030 At the same time, YUP started to share and play a fundamental role at the University: the spread of knowledge by publication. 1960s 1970s Introducing Korean Culture and Popularizing Specialized Knowledge YUP promptly met the needs of the times a rapid increase of Korean overseas immigration in the 1960s to 70s under the changed internal and external circumstances. At that time, YUP started to introduce the most famous Korean literary works. By 1972, YUP became the nation s biggest publisher of books printed in foreign languages. Furthermore, YUP became the leading figure in social contribution by participating in the national Maeulmoongo (a village library) movement in 1972, hosted by Kyunghyang Shinmun and the HQ of the Maeulmoongo movement. In 1974, YUP also paved the path for the opening of University scholarship to the public by issuing the Press feature publication Daehakmoongo (University Library Collection) a collection of unpublished academic works and creations by the faculty of Yonsei University, the first University library collection of the Korean University. YUP published and distributed professional literatures to general bookstores such as The History of Modern Korea by Hong Yi-Sup, Hankuk Minjok Kyohee Hyungsungsa (The Establishment of the Christian Church in Korea) by Min Kyung-Bae, and Jaah Wa Muah (Myself and No-self) by Kim Ha- Tai. This was appreciated in terms of introducing professional expertise to the public. Up until the late 1970s, YUP published a significant number of English editions of popular books for foreign readers, including 10 volumes of Hankuk ŭi Munhwa (Korean Culture) Series, Nanjung Ilgi (A War Diary) by Yi Sun-Sin, and Hankuk Eumsik Joribŏb (The Recipes of Korean Dishes). These efforts were recognized nationally, with YUP receiving a prize in the Korea Book Awards for outstanding publication in 1975 and 1977 for the publication of Hanguk Mukyo ui Yoksa wa Kucho (History and Structure of Korean Shamanism) and Hanguk Yuhaksa (History of the Study of Korean Confucianism). The 1960s and the 1970s were a momentous era in the assertion of YUP s sense of identity and character as the export of Korean language textbook and introduction of Korean culture abroad, which continues to this day. 10 1980s 1990s Yonsei University Press 1980s 1990s Establishment of the Academic Tradition of Yonsei University and the Identity of Yonsei University Press 1980s Emergence of the academic tradition of Yonsei University Going through the hardship of the time From the 1980s to the 1990s, Yonsei University Press started to question the Press identity as a University press. In those days, YUP published a wide variety of books from almost every possible academic field, however, the very identity of Yonsei University Press had not yet emerged. Not only this, but the social climate of that time represented by the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement, the ceasedpublication of journals, and the emergence of men of letters through the literary coterie magazines led to social preferences for publishing to so-called participative literature rather than the belles-lettres, This meant YUP was taking a heavy financial risk by publishing purely academic books. The Complete Works of Damwon Chung In-Bo < set of six volumes>, 1983 Nonetheless, YUP maintained its scholastic excellence and professionalism as a University press and was an eleven-time winner of the Outstanding Publication Awards and the Annual Recommended Books during 1980 through In addition, YUP also published several books of monumental significance to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of Yonsei University. These publications were especially important, in terms of showing the academic tradition and distinctive scholastic atmosphere of Yonsei? such as the publication of Chung In-Bo Jeonjip (the Complete Works of Chung In-Bo) in 1983, Hangyul Kim Yun-Kyung Jeonjib (the Complete Works of Hangyul Kim Yun-Kyong), Yonsei Daehakkyo Baek Nyeon Sa (a One Hundred Year History of Yonsei University), and One Hundred Years of Yonsei in Pictures in YUP s accumulation of a sizable amount of academic accomplishments, dating from the Yonhi College period, was recognized with YUP winning the 18 th (1984) and 20 th (1986) Annual Recommended Books with its two Complete Works series. 10 YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS

11 YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS SINCE 1929: HISTORY & VISION s Reinforcing the very identity of Yonsei University Press In the 1990s, Yonsei University Press strengthened its own characteristics through the reorganization of the Committee of Publication, for the purpose of more professional publication, and focused publication of religious books. Korean language textbooks were printed by Yonsei Hanguk eo Hakdang (The Korean Language Institute) with the education of Korean language and Bible study as their main objectives. As Yonsei Hanguk eo Hakdang (The Korean Language Institute) grew and reorganized their business, and also expanded to Los Angeles, YUP focused on the publication of Korean language textbooks to support their expansion. Focused-publication of religious books also reflected a core characteristic of Yonsei University, founded as a Christian school. In particular, the five-volume Hanguk Jongkyo Sasangsa (History of Religious Ideas in Korea), gave a general description of the origin, history, heritage, and social role of Christianity, Buddhism, Jeungsangyo, Shamanism, etc., in Korea. Hanguk Jongkyo Sasangsa also helped the understanding of its readers by translating original texts from these religions into the Korean language. YUP published Hong Yi-Sup Jeonjib (the Complete Works of Hong Yi-Sup), in 1994, and Paik Nak-Jun Jeonjib (the Complete Works of George Paik), in 1995, as a way of solidifying the academic tradition of Yonsei University. Paik Nak-Jun Jeonjib, 1995 Hanguk Jongkyo Sasangsa, 1991 Hong Yi-Sup Jeonjib, 1994 Yonsei University Press, during this period, experienced substantial growth quantitatively as well as qualitatively, notwithstanding the rapidly changing internal circumstances such as IMF Financial Crisis. YUP kept publishing textbooks for Korean language courses, in addition to the expansion and advancement abroad of the Korean Language Institute. YUP also vigorously kept pushing forward the publication of religious books. These steps also serve as a momentum to form another significant identity of Yonsei University Press. Furthermore, it was responsible for the publication of Yonsei Daehakkyo Baek Nyeon Sa (a One Hundred Year History of Yonsei University) and the Complete Works series of Kim Yun-Kyong, Chung In-Bo, and George Paik who are founding fathers of Yonsei s academic traditions. These publications are of profound significance in that they not only offering later scholars fundamental data for these figures, but also preserve the records and history of Yonsei University in a broader, ideological context. 11

12 2000 s Yonsei University Press 2000 s Stepping on the Path to Daehak Chulpan Munhwawon It was the 2000s that the Yonsei Daehakkyo Chulpanbu (which signifies Yonsei University publication department in Korean), changed its name and overall system to become Yonsei Daehakkyo Daehak Chulpan Munhwawon (which signifies The Center for Publication and Culture of Yonsei University in Korean), although the official English designation stayed the same as Yonsei University Press. As YUP hired new specialists for publication sales, printing, editing, and production, the Press also set up team units for these tasks and assigned professional members to these units? two staff members on sales marketing and three staff members on editing and production. Through this improvement, YUP increased the expertise and competence of the Press staff members. With the merger of Jinli-Jayu Pyunjibsil (the editorial office of Jinli-Jayu) into Yonsei University Press in March 2004, YUP s overall system relaunched as Yonsei Daehakkyo Daehak Chulpan Munhwawon. Previously, the chief-director of Yonsei University Press had taken full responsibility for the whole business of YUP, but the new system change led to devolvement of this responsibility to the Vice President for Administration of Yonsei University, serving as the Chief-Director of Yonsei University Press. Attempts to enhance and disseminate the an academic tradition of Yonsei continued throughout the 2000 s, YUP published Lee Kyo-Ho Jeonjib (the Complete Works of Lee Kyo- Ho) and Yŏnse ŭi palchŏn kwa Han'guk sahoe (Progress of Yonsei and Korean Society) to celebrate the 120 th anniversary of the foundation of Yonsei University. Throughout the 2000s, Yonsei University Press continued expanding its publication of highquality academic books, demonstrated through its selection as the Outstanding Publications of the Year by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the National Academy of Sciences for twelve consecutive years beginning in YUP played a major role during the 2000 s in expanding the public base for academic educational books and exporting them to the world. In 2005, YUP became the first University Press in Korea ever to sign a direct deal with Amazon.com, and in 2006 YUP pioneered advances as the Press distributed three hundred titles of academic educational e-books through Kyobo Book Store. As YUP signed an agreement, in July that year, with Beijing World Publishing Corporation ( 世界图书出版公司北京公司 ) to export its copyright, YUP s deal became the first export of copyright of Korean language textbook to a foreign nation. The transfer of the editorial office of Jinli-Jayu to the public relations office demanded a new operational system with Yonsei University Press. Besides this, questions were raised over Vice President s concurrent holding the directorship of YUP. The arrangement made it difficult not only for the Press s management not to respond immediately to demands, but also to develop strategies for the future. Thus, it was determined that the directorship position of Executive Director of the Yonsei University Press was to be given to a general professor. 13 YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS SINCE 1929: HISTORY & VISION 2030 Publication of Korean Language Textbooks - Enhancing the Characteristics and Studying Promotional Policy for the Field Yonsei University Press was able to benefit from the course-book fees which had been included in tuition until the early 2000s; however, with almost every textbook for college lectures being published by external publishing companies, there was need for a brand new revenue-making business to cope with the situation. This led to YUP s adoption and execution of new strategies beginning in 2007: the production of feature publication, publication of textbooks for the compulsory liberal arts courses, attracting print-materials of campus bodies, augmenting professional publishing staff, implementing intensive marketing strategies, and organic management of YUP s booksales network. To improve the stability of the overall profit structure of YUP, YUP published Yonsei Korean Language (completing its publication in 2009) containing the most innovative design and illustrations. It was a follow-up publication to the Hanguk eo Series (Korean Language Series), which was used by the Korean Language Institute for teaching Korean Language, and the innovation was possible only through a bold investment in the book series. The success of the Yonsei Korean Language series and its increased sales performance which was heavily indebted to Hallyu (Global Korean Wave) produced the sales revenue of textbooks that were much higher than that of academic educational books. In turn, Yonsei University Press re-invested the revenues that arose from the sales of Yonsei Korean Language back into the publication of professional literatures and the development of Korean language textbooks. As a result, the sales of YUP s Korean language textbooks consistently went up and its revenue reached 1.5 billion won. YUP also conducted a public hearing on the future development/promotional strategy of Yonsei University Press', discussed with the graduate students and the faculty solutions for how to improve Yonsei University Press. In response to the public hearing, YUP prioritized the following missions; implementing aggressive marketing strategy, publishing the translation of foreign literatures, playing an active role in projects related with the agenda of Yonsei, developing quality academic books, the export of Korean language textbook, production of feature publication, and maximizing the benefits as a University Press. The Media & Art series by the Institute of Media Arts, The Basic Concepts of Literature Series by the Institute of European Society and Culture, A Library of Language Society and Culture by the Institute of Humanities were designed and published during this time. In 2012, in celebration of the 565 th Hangul Day, YUP and Oesolhoe (Choi Hyun-Bae Memorial Society) jointly worked on the project to publish Choi Hyun-Bae Jeonjib (the Complete Works of Choi Hyun-Bae) containing his handwritten academic manuscripts and various copies/ editions of his work. To this end, YUP collaborated with Yonsei University Library where he worked and converted various copies that had been in the custody of private collectors until then, into the photographic images. YUP s hard efforts had came to fruition as the Press finally published a facsimile edition of Choi Hyun-Bae Jeonjib (the Complete Works of Choi Hyun- Bae < set of twenty-eight volumes>). The noble endeavors of Choi Hyun-Bae who dedicated his life to keeping hangul (Korean Language) were re-created eighty three years after his milestone the first version of Urimalbon, first published in Choi Hyun-Bae Jeonjib,

14 2010 s Yonsei University Press Yonsei Chinese-Chinese-Korean Dictionary, s ~ Yonsei University Press Leading Multi-Media Culture and Globalization As Yonsei University Press was reorganized as an executive agency, the Press was standing at a critical crossroads. In those days, YUP concentrated on creating higher consumer brand recognition to make Yonsei University Press a world-class publisher. To this end, YUP reformed and reorganized the Press publication deliberation system. Through the innovation, YUP built up a preliminary review system and publishing standards to strengthen the Press academic merit and profitability, and made every book printed at YUP to pass a review system. Not only this, but the Press also introduced a cost accounting system as a way of consolidating the soundness of inventory asset by taking reasonable cost analyses. Meanwhile, YUP began to appoint external publishing specialists as members of the committee of deliberation and review, giving YUP a wider, deeper range of specialties in terms of management and publication. To overcome the restrictions as a university press and promote YUP s new inclusive image, YUP launched Cheongsong Media as a brand new subsidiary publishing label of Yonsei University Press, and initiated its publishing business in As a part of foreign business, YUP signed the agreement in 2014, with Linking Publishing Corporation ( 聯經出版事業公司 ) in Taiwan to export its copyright of Yonsei Korean Language, and YUP re-confirmed the outstanding fame of the textbooks of the Korean Language Institute throughout Asia. In the same year, under the newly-signed contract with an International distributor with a warehouse in the US, YUP constructed a worldwide distribution system which allowed for easier and quicker distribution of the Press books to the world. With the purpose of overcoming the limitations of the domestic publishing market, YUP has strengthened the Press oversea marketing including the Press participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Guadalajara International Book Fair since In particular the Yonsei Chinese-Chinese-Korean Dictionary, published in 2015, introduced a bilateral interpretation of a dictionary for the first time in the world. It not only is the optimal Chinese reference books, but is also a channel of cultural interchange between Korea and China. Yonsei University Press is awaiting the publication of Standard Korean-Korean-Chinese Bilingual Dictionaries followed by Yonsei Chinese-Chinese-Korean Dictionary, and Chinese brief edition of the Korean-Korean- Chinese Bilingual Dictionaries, which will be published in accordance with the contract with Peking University Press of China. 15 YONSEI UNIVERSITY PRESS SINCE 1929: HISTORY & VISION 2030 Yonsei Univeristy Press: VISION 2030 Toward the Top 10 University Presses in the World Yonsei University Press has launched a movement of enriching the substance and planning for sustainable development to achieve the Press goal of VISION VISION 2030 stands for YUP s mission of 1) moving up the Value to boost Yonsei s status in the domestic and international community, 2) Internationalization, 3) strengthening Scholarship, 4) building the Infrastructure for strengthening the competitiveness, 5) Obligation to increase profits, and 6) expanding the cooperation and Network with other agencies. To begin with, YUP is working to get a potential reader by maximizing the promotion effects through upgrading the Press official website and publishing a webzine. By utilizing the latest systems as Google Play Books program as well as Kyobo Bookstore s e-book, Amazon Kindle, the Press also aims to secure and allow multi-device access to the readers. YUP is improving the Press readiness for the market change from off-line to online through these steps; forming IT partnerships with portal sites via dictionary DBs, the enlargement of YUP s overseas business cooperation, and discovering a new content replacing the demand for paper books in the long term. As a result of these steps-ahead preparations, Yonsei University Press have been awarded for the excellent executive agencies two years in a row (2015, 2016) in recognition of its excellent business performance and distinctive improvement in the operations management.
