4 Creighton Army ROTC History War Department Bulletin Number 2, Dated 27 January 1919, established the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps at Creighton University. Under the direction of Major Corbett S. Hoffman, the University s first professor of military science, 136 young men enrolled in the ROTC Program. Members of the graduation class of 1922 were the first to receive their commissions as second lieutenants. Since then, over 2,228 men and women have received their commissions at Creighton University. At the beginning of WWII, every male over 18 was drafted. In 1942 the Army created the Army Special Training Program at Creighton. All undergraduate men were required to take ROTC. The government funded this training for the university. Some students were called to active duty in as little as six months. By the end of WWII, over 2,000 Creighton students, faculty and alumni were in uniform. By the end of 1942, Creighton was down to about 200 traditional students. The General Military Science Program of Instruction, introduced the Department of the Army in 1952, replaced Creighton s Infantry Branch program, and was integrated into the University s curriculum during the school year of In 1960 the academic substitution curriculum was incorporated into the first year Basic ROTC Program. ROTC was required for all males until 1969 when the administration approved it to become voluntary. In 1982 the Creighton Bluejay Battalion was divided into two units. The second unit became known as the Maverick Battalion at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. This lasted until 1985 when the two units were again reunited forming the Black Wolves Battalion. This name stems from the family coat of arms of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. The Army ROTC Building was dedicated in 1993 to Ensign John J. Parle, a 1942 graduate of Creighton who gave his life off the coast of Sicily. Since then numerous Creighton alumni have served in WWII, Vietnam, 1st Gulf War, Kosovo, Iraqi and Afghanistan defending our freedom and liberties. The ROTC Program also has among its graduates several general officers, congressman and other government, business and professional leaders. 4

12 Tradition of the First Salute The origin of the exchange of a silver dollar upon an officer receiving his/her first salute is somewhat of a mystery. Many believe it to date from British units in early Colonial America. These new customs were retained by newly formed American units and militia and over time became the traditions of the United States military. One possible solution to the mystery lies in the custom of providing newly commissioned British officers with an enlisted aide. This enlisted aide would train the new officer and ensure that he was aware of all regimental traditions and that their equipment was proper and serviceable. In gratitude, the officers would often provide their enlisted aide with a small sum of money. The monthly pay of a US 2nd Lieutenant in 1816 consisted of a base pay of $25, a $3 ration allowance, and $1 for an enlisted advisor. While the advisor s pay was later discontinued, the relationship of enlisted trainers and young officers continued. The silver dollar salute has come to signify a deep sense of gratitude for the knowledge enlisted personnel, especially NCOs, have passed on to them during training. It is acknowledgment from one professional to another saying, Welcome to our service and to the profession of arms. The coin is an expression of respect shared together, as are all tasks and missions that are given for the officer and enlisted to perform. The values and ethics that are passed on to the newly commissioned officer are there to be shared and remembered and to be passed on again when the time comes. Whatever the true origin of the silver dollar salute ; it is part a part of the tradition of becoming an Army officer. It marks the moment in which they are no longer cadets or candidates, but rather commissioned officers in the United States Army. 12
