Department of Transport Department of Environment and Conservation Department of Health TravelSmart to work Promoting active transport in your workplace TRAVEL SMART A joint Australian, State and Territory Government Initiative under the National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health
Your organisation will benefit from enabling employees and clients to make active, sustainable travel choices. There are alternatives to driving alone to work and for trips during the work day. Walking, cycling and public transport can be active, affordable options. Avoid trips by using telecommunications. Where a car is needed, carpool. To boost the health of the workforce, tackle local traffic congestion and reduce pollution it is time for us to do things smarter. TRAVELSMART WORKPLACE The TravelSmart Workplace program is helping workplaces including businesses, government agencies, local councils, hospitals and universities promote active and sustainable travel choices. REDUCE fleet and parking costs BENEFITS OF PROMOTING ACTIVE, SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT REDUCE environmental and social impact FREE up car parking spaces for your customers and visitors ASSIST staff access, recruitment and retention BOOST employee health and productivity
WORKPLACE ACTION Employers influence how their employees and clients travel to their workplaces. Practical and positive action in your workplace will make it easier for more people to choose active, sustainable ways to get around. TRAVELSMART ACTIONS IN YOUR WORKPLACE COULD INCLUDE: Providing information on travel options and promoting their use Improving bicycle parking, lockers and showers Running cycling or walking challenges for staff Encouraging public transport and car pooling for business trips Better managing car parking and use of fleet vehicles Facilitating teleworking and web or video conferencing
SUPPORT FOR TRAVELSMART WORKPLACES By joining TravelSmart Workplace your organisation can access assistance to promote active travel choices. We offer advice, tools and training for workplace action. Information materials, activity ideas and workplace workshops are available to help promote to employees and clients. By taking part in TravelSmart Workplace you will engage with a growing network of employers promoting active, sustainable transport to their sites. Three ways to join in: Access TravelSmart resources on our website or or phone us for information Run a campaign in your workplace with TravelSmart resources and our advice Develop a travel plan with our support a package of actions for managing travel to a workplace. You can incorporate travel plan actions into a workplace health and wellbeing program. TravelSmart Workplace can help develop a travel plan to promote workforce health and enhance access for your organisation
MAKING A DIFFERENCE Employers taking action through TravelSmart include: St John of God Hospital in Subiaco offers its employees a green travel allowance and promotes public transport, cycling and carpooling. Woodside Energy reduced staff car parking and provided good facilities for employees who cycle to work when it relocated in the city, cutting car commuting by 20 per cent. Parsons Brinckerhoff has installed video and web conferencing facilities to help Perth staff reduce business travel miles QEII Medical Centre in Nedlands has funded better public transport, provides carpool parking and limits staff parking permits to those who need to drive. Solo car commuting by staff has been reduced from 85 per cent to 43 per cent so far. The City of Joondalup promotes travel alternatives to its employees, has pool bicycles and provides public transport passes for business trips.
For healthier staff and a healthier environment, make your workplace TravelSmart TravelSmart Workplace is helping WA workplaces reduce car use and promote active, sustainable travel choices. The program is a partnership between the Department of Environment and Conservation and the Department of Transport.
