2 For the academic year, 19 recipients will receive $2,000 scholarships to make their drive to success a little smoother because of. FPO s Asphalt Pavement Industry Program began in 1995, in accordance with the association s 1994 Long Range Strategic Plan. The program s growth has complemented the industry s quest for quality in pavement. With the inclusion of the scholarship recipients, the FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry Program has awarded 391 scholarships totaling $504,000. Smoothing the Drive to Success FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry Program Helping Students Achieve Degrees, Professional Goals Just as we depend on asphalt pavements for a smoother ride, so do Ohio college students preparing for careers in civil engineering and construction management. For the 19th year, Asphalt Pavement Industry s are helping smooth the journey for future industry professionals by providing monetary assistance toward reaching their academic goals. Along with fostering the development of tomorrow s industry professionals, this scholarship program is also encouraging the 10 Ohio institutions offering civil engineering or construction management degrees to advance the state of the industry by offering curriculum in asphalt pavement technology. Along with the 17 undergraduate scholarships, the FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry Program is also awarding two graduate scholarships for the academic year. The Wayne & Debbie Brassell Asphalt Pavement Industry and FPO Graduate Student are awarded to post-graduate students whose major field of study is related to asphalt pavement technology and who have been recommended by his/her faculty advisor. Prior to the formation of the FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry Program, Ohio universities offering degrees in civil engineering or construction management seldom provided coursework in asphalt pavement technology. The inception of the FPO scholarship program in 1995 changed all of that. 4 The Ohio asphalt pavement industry has enjoyed much success since the FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry Program began in The value of this program is being readily seen in our industry, and because of those successful results FPO remains emboldened in upholding the tangible measures of its scholarship program. Those tangible measures include: Development of asphalt courses at universities throughout Ohio Heightened asphalt research Graduates knowledgeable in asphalt materials and construction who have found employment with asphalt companies and various public agencies That success continues in 2014, as seven universities Akron, Bowling Green State, Dayton, Ohio, Ohio Northern, Ohio State and Toledo have students receiving FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry s. Flexible Pavements would like to salute the outstanding men and women receiving Asphalt Pavement Industry scholarships, and express its sincere gratitude to its members whose generosity made this possible. Students selected to receive scholarships for the academic year are recognized during the association s 2014 OHIO ASPHALT EXPO. 5 Program s Goal The FPO Asphalt Pavement Industry Program, which is administered through NAPAREF, was founded on four cornerstone objectives and strives to continue establishing and providing: Incentives for students to gain knowledge in asphalt pavement technology by requiring each scholarship recipient to take at least one course in asphalt pavement technology Incentives for colleges/universities to offer training in asphalt pavement technology by creating a student demand for the course Close ties between the asphalt industry and universities, to raise the awareness of asphalt pavement technology in the academic community and foster asphalt pavementrelated research A workforce trained in asphalt technology
