4 Changes in Recertification Moving into the Future Since the 1980s, recertification requirements were based on the premise that all providers completed the same clock hours of training. A small amount of training could be used to meet local or individual needs Need for more flexibility and adaptability in training

5 The How's and Why s of Change In the 2000 s, a multi disciplinary group comprised of representatives of the major regulatory, medical oversight and operational components of EMS addressed continued competency. Originally identified were 5 key principles to the National EMS Recertification Process. NREMT currently utilizes 4 of these principles: 1. Professional Standing 2. Practice Performance 3. Life Long Learning 4. Individual Continuing Education

6 Why the new NCCP model is better Ability to focus training on needs identified by the continuous quality improvement process Updated education driven by evidence based research Practice Analysis More current trends in emergency medicine Allows States/Local EMS organizations to have input for providers education Allows individuals to control their personal development

8 The National Component Attestation The National Component now has an attestation. Once the 2012 or 2016 model is selected, the national component autocompletes State-Approved Refresher Courses can choose either the 2012 or 2016 model.

14 Education Allowances (Maximum CE per course) Traditional Model No more than ½ in any one topic area EMR = 6hrs EMT = 24hrs AEMT = 18hrs NRP = 12hrs NCCP Model Can only use one course per recertification cycle, which can be used in any component Hours can be carried over to another component. Ex: I taught a refresher ACLS course on 1/6/16 and attended an ACLS refresher course on 3/12/15. You can only apply 1 ACLS course (8 hours total). You can use the 8 hours in any component, or can divide the hours, such as needing 4 hours in National and use the other 4 hours in Local or Individual course must be same date and description.

20 Your Role as a Training Officer Validate the continued competency of Nationally Registered EMS personnel by approving continuing education records entered by agency affiliates. You have SUPPORT!

21 Your Role as a Medical Director Ensure the continued competency of Nationally Registered EMS personnel by validating level specific skills. To maintain an 'Active' National EMS Certification, all advanced level providers (Advanced-EMTs and Paramedics) are required to have a licensed physician medical director attest to their skill competency every 2-year recertification cycle.

24 2012 or 2016 National Content? NREMT encourages the use of the most recent content. The model use may depend on the year and availability of resources and program or state approvals. Updates in National Content will occur every 4 years and include contemporary practices in Emergency Medical Services, research and trends, evidence based curriculum from the practice analysis, and other resources.

25 Other Recertification Information

26 Mark King Initiative (MKI) Minnesota Providers who previously held NREMT certification and have a current state card First Round is complete. Expiration 3/31/ Providers Second Round opens 7/5/17 Providers will have until 3/31/2018 to recertify. Providers must go into their NREMT account, click on the MKI tab and sign up! You must then recertify with the NCCP requirements.

Uniform standard of EMS as a profession National framework for certification and protection of the public REPLICA/ Compact Reciprocity with other states Ever have a need/want to move Many states accept NREMT certification to renew state certification 2 birds, 1 stone concept Prevent a lapsed NREMT certification Initial exam fees, testing site fees, applications, refresher fees, etc.

28 Active vs Inactive Certification Active Provider is actively working and providing patient care. To renew with an active status, Paramedics and AEMTs are required to have skills and education verification by a Training Officer and a Medical Director. Inactive Inactive status is designated for Nationally Certified EMS Professionals who are currently not providing patient care at their certification level Must continue to meet the NREMT continuing education recertification requirements in subsequent cycles. Training Officer and Medical Director are not required to sign off recertification Inactive to Active Form

Rolling Continuing Education Recertification cycles start on the date the recertification application is successfully processed and approved by the NREMT.

After a recertification application is approved, the new expiration date will be two years after the current expiration date listed on the individual's account
