2 PART A - SECTION SUMMARY A.1 Executive Summary 2011 was a year of rewards and recognition for vibrant activities for Kerala Section. The highlights for year 2011 are: Organised first International conference (RAICS 2011) 100% financially by the section with Papers in IEEE Explore. Organised a second International conference (ISGT-India) in association with PES. Four International conferences have been planned for the year 2012 and two in As part of increasing geographic span, Kochi subsection has been formed in the year 2011 and numerous events have been organised in Kochi. The section organised TISP (Teacher-In Service Program), first such program organised in India. SIGHT (Special Interest Group in Humanitarian Technologies) was launched by 2012 President Elect Mr. Peter Staecker. Section operational guidelines has been approved and operationalised. The Section also started SDLP (Section Distinguished Lecture Program). GOLD affinity group in association with Educational Activities Board organised various events organising young engineers. In association with other professional societies such as Institution of Engineers India, Computer Society of India, Project Management Institute and so on, conducted 42 weekly technical talks, on almost every other Wednesday. As usual Student activities were very vibrant with 63 student branch inaugurated this year. Efforts are in place to include Malabar and Kochi subsection into the LINK structure. Numerous awards including IEEE Communications Society award for Public service in the field of Telecommunications, R10 GOLD award etc & representation in IEEE HQ, MGA, R10 EXECOM. Two Global Outstanding Branch Counsellor Award 2011 were received by the section members. Section has numerous representations in EXECOM of R10, MGA, IEEE Ad-Hoc Committee, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE TISP India Ad-Hoc committee as part of actively engaging with IEEE entities. 2

8 PART B - ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES B.1 Membership Development Activities The membership data showing the different grades of members over the past 7 years are shown below. 8

9 A few observations are worth noting here: 1. As on 31 Dec 2011, the section membership stands at 5177, including 757 professional grade members. 2. The membership growth has increased to a percentage of 31 %. In last 7 years average growth rate is 20% 3. The Section membership has a significant contribution of 85.3% from student community including Graduate Student Member and Student Member. In every program conducted exclusively by the Section, the welcome address by any of the Section Office bearers would include a talk on IEEE, its activities, and the benefits of being a member. Also the Section has realized that the best way to increase membership is to retain student members as regular members and has focused on GOLD activities to target this community. This is despite the fact that many students migrate to neighboring states for jobs after graduation. These steps should have helped in converting many aspirants to full members, as indicated by the membership data. B.2 Chapter Activities There are four technical society chapters in the Section. They are: 1. Computer Society Chapter 2. Communication Society Chapter 3. Industrial Automation, Industrial Electronics, Power Electronics Joint Chapter 4. Power & Energy Society Chapter Each chapter had a vibrant year of activities as summarized below: Computer Society Chapter The highlight of the year was a Video conference moderated from the Section with Dr. Sorel Reisman, President, IEEE CS, Mr. John Walz, President-elect, IEEE CS and Dr. R. Kasturi, Vice President, MGAB, who was present in person at Trivandrum. Different IEEE CS Chapters and Student Branch Chapters logged in for the 90-minute programme. The conference was organised in association with three premiere engineering colleges in Trivandrum namely, CET, SCET and GEC. The confernce was held at The Mascot Hotel, from September Over 500 papers were received from 13 different countries. 175 papers were selected for paper presentation & 76 for poster presentation. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. V.M. Gopala Menon, I.A.S.,Secretary (Cooperation) Government of Kerala and Former 11

12 Director of Census Operations, Kerala. The conference has 2 tutorials and 4 keynote talks. The conference was concluded with Valedictory address by Dr. Dasgupta, Director IIST. 12

13 International Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT India) The section has organised its second International Conference of the year, ISGT-India in association with PES from December 2011, at The Quilon Beach Hotel, Kollam. The conference was organised in association with TKMCE, Kollam. The conference received 161 papers out of which 95 were selected for presentation. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. H.P. Khincha, Chairman of Electrical Sciences, IISc, Bangalore. The conference had 3 tutorials and a talk by Dr. Rahul Tongia, India Smart Grid Forum. The conference concluded with Utility meeting were representatives of industry discussed various issues related to smart grid implementations in India. National Conference on Next generation Wireless Communication The Section organised a national conference WingCom 11 in association with CDAC, Trivandrum from Oct 2011, at Munnar Engineering College, Munnar. The conference began with a Keynote Address given by Prof U B Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad. The inaugural Address was rendered by Maj Gen HS Johar, Commanding officer in Indian Army. Over 130 delegates from defence, Law & order, Industry, utility companies, academy participated in the conference. The conference had 2 tutorials and 8 invited talks by speakers from IISc, IITM, Stevens Institute USA, Indian Army, DRDO, CDAC SDLP (Section DLP) First SDLP Conducted on 06 Aug 2011 at Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam 13

The Course was meant to introduce the house wives into the world of computers by making them learn MS Word, multimedia, internet and Dec 2011: PANEL DISCUSSION ON CHALLENGES- INNOVATIONS SUCCESS, WIE special session at ISGT Conference, Kollam. The panel discussion provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss innovative ideas to challenge the current situations and strategies for developing confidence and leadership qualities that are essential for a woman engineer in becoming a high performer Dec 2011: Workshop on Research Methodology, SCET. The Workshop was organized to encourage the teaching faculty to pursue higher up in their field of interest and also to provide specific guidelines through expert talks. Four quarterly issues of the IEEE Kerala Newsletter have been published which were highly rated by the members. IEEE Kerala Homepage, has been revamped with the help of student volunteers of LINK. The e-group of IEEE Kerala members, ieeekerala@yahoogroups.com has been utilized to communicate with the members. In addition, the e-notice facility provided by HQ was made use of to broadcast important messages, like the AGM notice, call for papers etc. The section has its presence in the social networking space with a LinkedIn group called IEEE Kerala Section. Chairman, IEEE Kerala section is ex-officio member in the Governing Council and Executive Committee of Kerala State IT Mission IEEE Kerala Section has been contributing to the activities of SPACE, an Agency promoted by Kerala State IT mission for the promotion of Free and Open Source Software. Mr Satish Babu, Chairman, represents IEEE Kerala section in SPACE, the society for FOSS The section also actively supports the IEEE India Council. C.2 Special Events An Evening with 2012 IEEE President Elect- Dr. Peter Staecker The students of IEEE LINK had the rare opportunity to spend an evening with IEEE President Elect 2012 Peter Staeckaer at College of Engineering, Trivandrum on 14th Dec The session began by delivering the IEEE Code of Ethics. Er. Sasi P.M., Chair, IEEE Communication Society, Kerala Chapter and Past Chair of IEEE Kerala Section proposed the welcome address by greeting Dr. Peter Staecker and the other delegates to the event. 26

27 Next were the humanitarian project presentations by students where two important projects that have won various accolades were showcased. First, Ramesh N Nair, Technical Coordinator, IEEE LINK, Amrita College of Engineering, Kollam presented his project on Intelligent Home Navigation System (IHNS) for the Elderly and Physically Challenged. The second one was by Sreevas S., LINK Technical Wing, College of Engineering, Trivandrum on LINK HTC Project where numerous volunteers of LINK took up the initiative and electrified a village in Kollam hitherto living under darkness. Dr. Peter Staecker, then gave away the R10 awards to the winners. The web team of College of Engineering, Trivandrum received the 1st prize in the R10 Student Branch website contest. Mr. Ramesh Nair and team received the 2nd prize for the R10 paper contest. Launch of SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technologies) The newly formed interest group SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technologies) was launched by 2013 IEEE President Elect Mr. Peter Staecker, on 15 Dec 11, at CDAC, Trivandrum. IEEE Staff members in-charge of (E4C) Ms. Tara Wisniewski and Ms. Noha Ghobashy (ASME) were also present 27
