Research internships abroad for students of TU/e Department of the Built Environment (rev. September 25, 2017) For more information, please contact: Ms. Henny Houben Internationalization Officer / Erasmus coordinator TU/e Department of the Built Environment h.a.m.houben@tue.nl, Tel.: VRT 2.12) informa3on desk open from hrs. The information in this handout is in addition to the following pages in the TU/e study guide: Introduction TU/e strongly encourages its students to gain international experience during their master study. We are living in a globalized world, and in order to succeed professionally, graduates need to be able to interact effectively across borders and cultures. At TU/e department of the Built Environment, graduate school students can gain international experience either by spending a study semester at one of our exchange partners, or by doing a 15 ECTS research internship abroad. If your MSc thesis supervisor approves, it is also possible to go abroad as part of your graduation program. To have your research internship count as international experience, you need to generate at least (the equivalent of) 15 ECTS abroad. Important Carefully note that procedures and rules for international students gaining work experience alongside their study, are not the same as for students performing an internship as part of their TU/e study program. The information in this handout is meant for the latter only. For additional information, see the following webpages: study in Holland study options internship internship as part of a program in Holland or: study in Holland prac2cal ma3ers working while studying
Exchange students: It is not possible for exchange students to do a work placement or research internship outside of TU/e. Internship possibilities Graduate students at TU/e Department of the Built Environment can have one of the following internships incorporated as a free elective course in their personal study program: Course codes relevant work experience - 5 ECTS credits AUDE 7QRWE0, SD 7KRWE0, BPS 7SRWE0, USRE + CME 7ZRWE0 Goal: gaining work experience. Course codes academic work experience 15 ECTS credits AUDE 7QAWE0, SD 7KAWE0, BPS 7SAWE0, USRE+ CME 7ZAWE0 Goal: conducting scientific research on a defined topic. Research as part of the graduation project Content and duration of the internship, and the relative number of ECTS credits to be destined in consultation with the chair of the graduation committee. More information on the content and learning objectives of relevant and academic work experiences is available in OASE. The responsible lecturers for all academic and relevant work experiences are the respective portfolio holders for teaching: Ir. Anne-Marie Peters Dr.ir. Ad Vermeltfoort Dr.ir. Henk Schellen Ir. Aloys Borgers Ir. Aloys Borgers for architectural urban design and engineering for structural design for building physics and systems for urban systems and real estate for the master program CME Ways to find an internship Our department does not mediate between students looking for an internship, and companies or universities looking for trainees. To find a suitable internship, you may f.i.: * consult the Reconfirm JOEplus webpage : or google for TUE Reconfirm. * Have a look at the CHEOPS internship vacancies webpage: * consult one of the many databases on internet, like or * Look at websites of foreign chambers of commerce, interesting companies, organizations and multinationals. * ask students that have already been abroad, and consult the experiences abroad survey on the general OASE news pages (common links experiences abroad). If you would like to perform a research internship as part of your graduation program, it is perhaps possible to use your graduation supervisor s international contacts to find the most suitable research group.
The architecture chair of Prof. Christian Rapp offers the opportunity to combine the graduation project with the component of international experience in the form of a combined graduation studio with certain partner universities abroad. The collaboration and exchange are content-wise related to the international graduation project itself. The duration of the stay will be between 3 and 5 months. The exact terms will be defined by the respective graduation studio. For more information please contact Dipl.-Ing. Haike Apelt ( h.apelt@tue.nl ). Training s and scholarships Once all parties involved have agreed upon the content and duration of your internship, all details need to be stipulated in a training that should be signed by the student, the internship provider, and on behalf of our department by our managing director, Drs. Suzanne Udo. As soon as the training has been signed by the student and the internship provider, you should hand it in at the departmental international office for signing by Drs. Udo. Please note that Drs. Udo is the only person at the department who is authorized to sign our student s traineeship s. There are three different types of training. In the scheme in the annex you may look up which you are supposed/are compelled to use in your specific situation, and which scholarship (if any) you will be eligible to apply for. This internship consists of 3 inextricably linked parts (A, B and C) and can be downloaded from our education guide: Go to educa2on guide graduate school master s programs Architecture, Building and Planning study periods, internships and research ac2vi2es abroad work placement. The use of the is highly recommended, but not compulsory. If the internship provider insists to use another format, students should first have this contract checked for legal irregularities by Mr. Esther de Brouwer, our institutional educational jurist, before handing it in at my office for signing by our managing director. e.b.m.h.d.brouwer@tue.nl Erasmus training Erasmus Placement Scholarships are possible for traineeships between 3 and 12 months at a company or HEI (higher education institute) in an Erasmus country (EU-countries plus Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Turkey and Macedonia). Students that receive a reimbursement from the internship provider can only apply for an Erasmus Placement Scholarship if this reimbursement does not exceed EUR 750 per month (in 2016/2017). The scholarship can be applied for by all Dutch and international (EEA and non EEA students) provided the internship is not performed in their country of origin. The Erasmus Placement Scholarships are handled by TU/e Reconfirm, reconfirm@tue.nl Reconfirm will send students an application form upon request. This form (details of the student) needs to be approved by the departmental exchange coordinator (Henny Houben), and thereafter by the institutional exchange coordinator (Petri van de Vorst STU). After TU/e Reconfirm has approved the application, the student will get access to an online program to guide him through the required procedure. Erasmus OLS test Students that go abroad with Erasmus to a country that has German, English, Spanish, French or Italian as mother tongue, will be asked to take an Erasmus OLS test at the start and end of their internship. This Online Linguistic Support Test is compulsory, but the results will not have any
consequences for a student s personal situation. The information will mainly be used to monitor the linguistic development of mobility students in general. For more information, see: If you do not take this entrance and exit test, this will have consequences for the payment of your Erasmus scholarship. Erasmus scholarships for recent graduates Recent graduates that start a traineeship within 12 months after their graduation, are also eligible for Erasmus support provided they have already been selected for this traineeship by TU/e during their final study year. For more information please contact TU/e Reconfirm. Nuffic training For students with a non-eea nationality, the Nuffic training is compulsory if they intend to perform an internship in the Netherlands. This training can be downloaded from the NUFFIC site: 1.doc Dutch government requires that copies of the are kept by both the internship provider and TU/e. Parties that are in default risk to be fined by Dutch government. Fund International Experience (FIE) and Holland Scholarship (HS) The FIE scholarship (EUR 750,-- per student in 2016/2017) can be applied for by students that are charged the statutory (low) tuition fee rate (= mainly students with a European (EEA) nationality). The HS scholarschip (EUR 1.250,--) can only be applied for by students with the Dutch nationality, and by students receiving Dutch study finance. The total number of scholarships that is available per quartile is limited. Students that qualify for one or both scholarships, will be put on a ranking list. Both scholarships will be granted by STU based on a student s GPA (grade point average = gewogen gemiddelde) and study progress. Each quartile has its own application deadline. For more information and the application form, see: DIA and DAAD grants An ample amount of grants is available for students that have been accepted for an exchange or internship by a German university or company. These DIA and DAAD grants are financed by the German government. For more information, see: Remaining scholarships The Beursopener search engine provides information on a wide range of grants and scholarships: Erasmus for young entrepreneurs (EYE) program If you have well-defined plans to start your own business, or if you have already recently started your own business, the EYE program may be of interest to you. The EYE program is a European exchange program which gives new and prospective entrepreneurs the chance to learn from experienced entrepreneurs running small businesses in participating countries. For more information on the conditions and available scholarships, you may consult the TU/e-Reconfirm webpage: On condition that the EYE-internship is approved by the responsible lecturer, it may count as a 5 ECTS internship.
Insurances, work permits, and visa applications For internships in Holland as part of the TU/e study program, no work permit is required, and there is no limit to the number of hours a student is allowed to work at the internship provider. Dutch and international students going abroad for an internship, should check with the embassy or consulate of the country of destination if and which visa is required, and how it can be applied for. Depending on your nationality and the country of destination, a work permit may also be required. We advise you to never go abroad for study or an internship with a tourist visa, unless the embassy has explicitly given this advice. Visa procedures may take a couple of months. We therefore advise you to start preparing your stay abroad well in advance. TU/e has arranged a collective business travel insurance for students going abroad for a study or internship. Students that follow the proper TU/e procedures will automatically be registered by TU/e for this collective insurance for the duration of their internship abroad. For more information and a survey of its coverage, see: In their capacity of intern, students are covered by TU/e s liability insurance. This insurance however only covers damage caused on the job. It is the student s own responsibility to arrange additional personal liability insurance. All students going abroad should make sure that their medical costs are covered throughout Europe. If the internship is performed outside of Europe, TU/e s business travel insurance will cover the (extra) costs outside of Europe, provided the student is properly insured for medical care in Europe. Some countries may put demands on a student s health insurance if they are entering the country on a student visa. If the government requires any additional student health insurance, the student is compelled to take this out, even if he is already properly insured. If not, he will not be able to obtain the visa. International students that have taken out AON student insurance should check if their insurance policy also covers health and liability insurance in their capacity of intern (this also goes for traineeships performed in Holland). If not, they should take out additional insurance. For more information on insurances during your internship, you can best contact Ms. Petri van de Vorst of our institutional international office ( p.g.j.v.d.vorst@tue.nl Additional information Reimbursement of local travel costs During your internship abroad you can put your Dutch student travel product (OV-vergoeding) on hold and apply at DUO for a monthly travel allowance (EUR 99,66 in 2016/2017). For more information, see: You can have the application form signed at the STU information desk in MetaForum. Subletting your accommodation Maybe it is possible to sublet your room. Our institutional accommodation officer MS. Peggy van de Voort, p.v.d.voort@tue.nl) may bring you into contact with inbound students looking for
accommodation in Eindhoven. If necessary, you can ask me to draw up a letter for Vestide confirming the period of your internship abroad. Points of attention: Consult GGD for information on vaccinations and health advices in the country of destination (see: ). Consult the travel advice webpage from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning safety issues in the country of destination (see: They also have an app you can download (24/7 BZ reis). Take care of arranging your banking business if necessary authorize your parents/partner. TU/e s Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (CLIC) offers English language courses. For more information, see: Students that would like to learn the Spanish language, can enroll for a course organized by TU/e Innovation Lab, see: or they may consider taking classes at Fuentes in Eindhoven ( ) or at the Fontys Language Centre ( ). Students that are interested in taking German language classes may find an interesting course at the Goethe-Institut : ( An international driving license (only needed outside the EU) can be obtained at ANWB shops. An ISIC card is an official student identification card and is supported by UNESCO, the European Union and many ministries of education worldwide. It is the only international proof of being a fulltime student. For more information, see: Useful websites: Also see the annex
