Annemarie recalls an incident in her volunteering journey where a patient ignored her despite her repeated attempts to talk to her. While she felt disheartened, Annemarie continued spending time with the patient, and eventually won her over with her sincerity. I was really touched when she finally reached out for my hand during a walk. To patients, hospitals can be a scary place to be in. I hope to provide some comfort to the patients there, no matter how small it may be, she said. Annemarie hopes to pursue medicine in one of the local universities. Gentle and soft spoken, Annemarie s demeanour belies her stronger side. The 19-year-old grew up watching disaster documentaries, intrigued by how medical teams saved lives quickly. I realised that medicine can make an impact on people s lives and give them hope in an otherwise bleak situation, said Annemarie, whose interest in biology was further fuelled after she joined a life sciences programme in secondary school. The programme gave me the opportunity to work on my first research project in secondary school, which focused on bacteria growth on different types of meat. This exposed me to research and increased my thirst for science, she added. The Biomedical Science graduate also did an internship at A*STAR, where she worked on a project on neurodegenerative disease that affects children. The 19-year-old wants to live in a world where humans command robots to perform mundane tasks. Who wouldn t want a robotic helper around the house to do domestic chores? I hope to create something useful that people can use, said Aaron, whose love affair with technology began after he used a computer for the first time at the age of seven. The boy genius then went on to teach himself coding skills, mostly by reading a C for Dummies book. Once he learned the language, it did not take long before he started writing his own simple computer games. Aaron continued to cultivate his fascination in science and research throughout his academic journey, participating in hackathons and robotics competitions both locally and internationally. In fact, Aaron even earned a spot to represent Singapore in the World Robotics Olympiad in Sochi, Russia, in It was definitely a great learning opportunity, as I was able to pit my skills against the best Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award teams from around the world. I also gained new insights on how to improve my robot for future competitions, he recounted. To Aaron, the best thing about programming is coming up with creative solutions to realworld problems and the potential to learn something new every day. Programming is very challenging because it requires a lot of patience. It s very satisfying when you finally get your robot to work, said the Engineering Science graduate who discovered how engineering can improve people s lives while working on a project during a summer school programme at the University of Sheffield in England. Working together with his team mates, Aaron developed a mobile application to help patients determine the probability of an asthma attack. For his final-year project, Aaron also developed a computer-aided system to detect colorectal lesions, which can improve the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. It made me more certain of my goal to pursue a career in scientific research and improve people s lives, he said. Aaron has received several offers for his further studies, including the Renaissance Engineering Programme at Nanyang Technological University, and Computer Science at University College London. 7 Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Mohamed Farouq Bin Mohamed School of Health Sciences OTHER AWARDS SingHealth Gold Medal & Prize National University Hospital Prize Tan Tock Seng Hospital Prize Lee Kuan Yew Award & Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award He enjoys the teamwork and camaraderie in the hospital wards, and the fact that no two work days are the same. Unlike a desk job which can become rather routine, my day revolves around different tasks such as serving medication, wound dressing, preparing patients for their operations, and taking care of them after their procedures, he said. While nursing brings joy to Farouq he feels glad when he gains his patients trust and confidence, and when they finally get well he admits that it does come with its fair share of challenges. From the physical and mental stress of working in a fast paced environment to managing the occasional difficult patients, these challenges seem daunting. However, Farouq remains dedicated to his mission. Nursing is more than a job, it s a calling. I feel a great sense of satisfaction when I help other people, he shared. The avid netball player hopes to become an Advanced Practice Nurse. Mohamed Farouq found his life purpose in an unlikely place while lying on a hospital bed. It all started back in 2008, when Farouq was rushed to the hospital after he had fainted during a school trip to Pulau Ubin. I felt lonely and afraid as I didn t know what was going to happen. But a nurse assured me that she would be by my side. Her presence and gentle words really touched me, he recounted. Throughout his five-day stay at the hospital, Farouq remembered that the nurses in his ward went the extra mile to ensure he felt comfortable. Their kind gestures left a deep impression on Farouq, and inspired him to take up nursing. Fast forward nine years, and Farouq is graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) with a nursing diploma. Besides providing excellent nursing care and comfort to his patients, Farouq also hopes to make time for that personal touch. For example, during his clinical attachments at various hospitals, he always makes it a point to chat with his patients and listen to their worries. The Lee Kuan Yew Award was first presented in It is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from a technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The award was presented for the first time in This year, eight Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Awards will be given. Besides providing physical help, I also believe in offering emotional support to patients. More importantly, I hope to be a friend who will stay with them through their journeys of recovery, said Farouq.

8 Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal WINNER Liaw Lay Kian School of Health Sciences OTHER AWARDS St Luke s Silver Medal & Prize While going back to school may be the last thing on the minds of many people in their 50s, Liaw Lay Kian s learning journey has only just begun. Not only does the 55-yearold plan to pursue a Specialist Diploma after graduating from polytechnic, she knows exactly which field she hopes to specialise in: palliative care nursing. Motivated by her love for people, Lay Kian only discovered her calling after she became a full-time caregiver to two of her loved ones. For about two decades, the former homemaker cared for her father-in-law, who was bedridden from a stroke he suffered in the 1990s. The mother-of-two was then dealt a second blow in 2008 when her husband was diagnosed with advanced stage colorectal cancer. She cared for him too, until he passed away in the same year, within 10 months of his diagnosis. I never imagined that I would become a student again, let alone be in a class with students younger than my daughters. It was definitely challenging but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, she added. Despite being the oldest in her cohort, Lay Kian found it easy to fit in with her younger classmates. They treated me like one of them and made me feel at home. I m grateful that they were always ready to help, especially when I was trying to figure out how to use the school s online portal, she shared. Besides juggling her school work and motherhood, Lay Kian also found time to volunteer at the Dover Park Hospice throughout her three years at NP. Lay Kian is currently working as an assistant nurse at Dover Park Hospice, and believes her life experiences have taught her the importance of providing holistic end-of-life care to others. On what motivates her to keep going, Lay Kian, who counts Florence Nightingale and Mother Teresa as her role models, said: I remain focused on my goal to be a competent nurse, and to bring comfort to those feeling down and out in their season of life. The Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal is awarded each year to the most outstanding Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate who is formerly from an Institute of Technical Education. First awarded in 1994, the medal is funded by the Tay Eng Soon Scholarship Fund, set up in honour and memory of the late Senior Minister of State for Education, Dr Tay Eng Soon. Following her father-in-law s death in March 2012, Lay Kian decided to train to become a nurse, first at the Institute for Technical Education, then at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). Having been a caregiver before, I know how important it is to help patients live out their remaining days with dignity. No one wants to be a burden, and I hope to nurse them in a way that makes them feel loved and valued, said Lay Kian, who returned to school because she wanted to learn how to deliver better care to other patients.

9 Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Amanda Tan Jia Ying School of Humanities & Social Sciences OTHER AWARDS Adrenalin Gold Medal & Prize Pure Eddiction Prize Amanda Tan is no stranger to adversity. The Business & Social Enterprise graduate had her world turned upside down when her father s car dealership business went bust in A few years later, just as they were rebuilding their lives, he became partially paralysed after a brain aneurysm. I was very scared as I was so young then. I kept thinking, Why me? said Amanda. It was a very difficult period in my life. Fortunately, her father managed to pull through and recovered. She is also grateful that a medical social worker stepped in to ensure that her family was getting all the financial and emotional help they needed. Touched by the warmth and compassion extended to her family by the social worker, Amanda vowed to pay it forward in future. As an active member of the Food Aid and LEO clubs in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Amanda reaches out to the disadvantaged through food distribution, visitation and home clean-up programmes regularly. She enjoys interacting with people and making a difference in their lives, adding that she has gained her most valuable lessons by listening to those she was trying to help. For example, she learnt about respecting the personal space of others when she had the opportunity to work on a foster care case during her internship at the Ministry of Social & Family Development. I remember being with this five-year-old girl who was very excited to meet her biological parents on an access visit, but was very sad when she had to return to her foster family after that. She didn t want to talk about it, so I gave her the space she needed, said Amanda. You can love without speaking. A lot of times, just being present for someone is what really matters. While the job of a social worker requires one to have mental and emotional strength, love and passion keeps Amanda going. It is a blessing to be able to help others. There were definitely times when I felt frustrated, but I ve learnt to bounce back. Knowing that I have been of positive influence or help gives me a great sense of satisfaction, she said. The Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award is a premier award for all-round excellence. It is presented to a select group of five to 10 top graduates from each graduating batch of about 5,000 students. The award was presented for the first time in This year, eight Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Awards will be given. I told myself this was something I wanted to do. Despite the challenges, Amanda finds much to be thankful for. She believes the trials have redefined her priorities and inspired her to pursue social work. I used to think that success was all about getting a good job and a high-paying salary. But after all these trials, I have realised that it is more important to make an impact in the lives of others, she said.

10 Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award WINNER Samuel Lam Wei Liang School of Engineering OTHER AWARDS Siemens Gold Medal & Prize DNV CTC Prize Schneider Electric Prize Samuel Lam has the television to thank for sparking his interest in the clean energy sector. And it all started after he had watched some documentaries on off-grid homes and renewable energy at the age of 12. The rest, as they say, is history. The programmes highlighted the effects of climate change in our world and how renewable energies can be an effective tool against environmental destruction. Clean energy is the future and I hope to play a part in protecting our planet, said Samuel. It is not surprising that Samuel decided to take up a Clean Energy Management diploma in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). Besides getting a better understanding on renewable energy technologies through his course, Samuel appreciates the hands-on learning opportunities that he has received at NP. learnt in the classroom to my job, such as putting lightning protection methods in place and designing the arrangement of the solar panels. The self-starter even took the initiative to organise a study trip to Tasmania, Australia, for his cohort. Together with some of his classmates, Samuel did intensive research on leading companies in the industry, arranged for site visits there, and put up a proposal for their eight-day trip. It was tiring, but very rewarding, said Samuel. As Singapore has limited renewable energy options, I thought we d benefit from the exposure. It was truly amazing to see hydroelectric power dams, wind turbines and solar panels in person! While that is plenty to keep a student busy, Samuel began coaching his juniors in programming concepts and math through a peer tutoring programme he had pioneered with his friend last year. I find great satisfaction in helping people and seeing them accomplish their goals, shared Samuel, who has personally tutored five of his juniors. Samuel has received the National University of Singapore Merit Undergraduate (Merit) Scholarship and will be pursuing a degree in electrical engineering after his National Service. The Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award is a premier award for all-round excellence. Driven by a sense of responsibility towards the environment, Jia Le hopes to invoke change through his actions and inspire others to follow in his footsteps. It bothers me when I see people wasting water, especially when they leave the tap on while brushing their teeth. Many people don t realise that making small changes in their actions can make a big difference, he said.
