3 Singapore celebrated her Golden Jubilee last year, marking 50 years of independence and a significant juncture in Singapore s history. As we reflect on Singapore s progress from a country with humble beginnings to one of peace, progress and economic prosperity, let us also adopt a prospective outlook and be forward-looking in identifying and addressing upcoming environmental challenges that Singapore may face in the future. The theme of the SFSS 2016 is Creating a Smart and Sustainable City, which encapsulates our aspirations for Singapore as we chart our journey in the post-sg50 era. With the launch of the Smart Nation Initiative and the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 2015, technology can be deployed to create green and liveable cities; an integration of two different but closely related visions of Singapore as we strive to become a smart and sustainable city. In this symposium, you will be offered a glimpse of what lay in store for Singapore s future in the area of food security and transportation. Through participation and engagement in this exciting dialogue, we sincerely hope you will develop an interest in these issues and acquire valuable insights on the repertoire of ideas and innovations that serve to steer Singapore s evolving landscape towards a smart and sustainable city, capable of tackling food security and transportation issues. On behalf of the SFSS 2016 Organising Committee, we would like to express our gratitude to all who have offered their assistance and advice in making this symposium a reality. Special mention is reserved for our faculty advisor, Associate Professors Edward Webb, course coordinator Ms Cheryl Sim, the BES Students, as well as members of the SFSS 2013 Organising Committee, of whom they have provided valuable guidance throughout the tedious planning and coordination of the symposium. Finally, we thank you for joining us and wish you an enriching and enjoyable time at the symposium!
