1 February 2015 Leading Oregon in the new specialty of Holistic Nursing Volume 8 Issue 1 OHNA Board of Directors Director Marina Ormes RN, HN-BC Secretary Jess Young, RN Treasurer Deonne Wright, RN, RA Communications Coordinator Deonne Wright, RN, RA Directors-at-Large Sierra Bassett Jess Young, RN Larry Eckman Inside This Issue Director s Message Leadership Poem Call for Nominations News and Events OHNA 2014 Conference Photos Conferences and Classes Welcome to New Members Director s Message Greetings! I am very excited to step into my new role as Director of OHNA. I joined in 2011, and became Secretary in Since I first got involved, I have seen exciting developments and I am invigorated and inspired to imagine the future of OHNA. As an organization, we are still in the very beginnings of creating and defining who we are. Our annual Breitenbush conference retreat currently provides nurses with an opportunity to earn contact hours while relaxing and rejuvenating in a healing environment, connecting with our wholeness, and building community in a beautiful natural setting. We are now in a strong position to take our next steps as we move forth into a new future. We are here in part to hold space for and create new paradigms within nursing and healthcare in general. Each of us knows what is possible, we can feel it in our hearts. While the realities we face in the day to day world may sometimes feel intimidating or like they will never change, we have also seen real change happen. We are beginning to see more alternatives within hospital and clinic settings. We are beginning to see providers with greater openness to a holistic approach And we are beginning to see where each one of us has a genuine contribution to make through authentic caring presence. In other words, you matter. We are all leaders. You are a leader by virtue of the fact that you have a perspective and experiences to offer which others may not be able to see. Through trusting yourself, believing in what is possible, and taking right actions in right timing, you help to reshape the nature of the healing environment. This year, the OHNA Board of Directors will be meeting to discuss our future as an organization and further develop our policies and procedures so we can continue to move forward and solidify our purpose with structures to help us move forward. Continued on page 2 Gratitude Effect - article Page 1
2 Director s Message cont d We welcome your input, and would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and questions. Please me at marinaormes(at)gmail.com with anything you wish to share. I look forward to seeing you in October! Marina Ormes Marina Ormes RN, BA, HN-BC is a board certified holistic nurse and an evolutionary astrologer with a 20 year background in astrology and holistic healing. Her unique approach to healing helps individuals awaken their own heart s wisdom to improve their personal well-being and live a life of meaning and purpose. Marina believes that when individuals feel validated in a resonant sense of purpose, they are more empowered to make the best choices for themselves on their personal healing path. They are better able to manifest the support they need, and to see illness, misfortune, and loss as teachers that help them become more whole. A Registered Nurse since 2009, she earned her holistic certification in After spending a year and a half in Labor and Delivery, she branched out on her own to start a private practice combining her training as a Nurse with her background in astrology and holistic healing. She uses astrology, energy healing, and guided meditation to support clients on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. Marina has been on the board of the Oregon Holistic Nurses Association since She anticipates the publication of her first book Cycles of Healing: Personal Transformation In Relationship to a Living Cosmos in The Leader s Way Through Marina Ormes Life comes from essence. And to know, without doubt without judgment, without wiggly, squiggly, self-deprecating attempts to squirm away from the truth that who I am is the right person to be here. I am the right person to be here. I may not have all the answers, but I am willing to love myself, willing to open so I can hear know feel what needs to happen. I am willing to be a conduit of love. Leadership comes from trust. And to know, without doubt without judgment without wiggly squiggly, self-deprecating attempts to squirm away from its power the truth lies within m. The truth lies within me. I may not have all the answers, but I know the right words actions decisions come from my center. I am willing to connect with my center. My next step comes from guidance. And to know, without doubt without judgment without wiggly squiggly, self-deprecating attempts to squirm away from its clarity that I already know the way through whatever I face. I know the way through. Though at times I may feel confused, frightened, or alone, I can always connect with presence love being and in the present moment, I am safe. I am willing to choose the present moment. Page 2
3 For those who count on me, Fort those who look to me to help them through, and for those who are learning to live from essence... I am here. About This Poem Marina Ormes created this poem for, and read it during the Opening Ceremony of AHNA s 34 th annual conference, held in Portland, OR. It speaks to the theme of the conference Through the Looking Glass: A Vision of Holistic Leadership. She participated at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies with other members of OHNA and the AHNA Portland Chapter. 7 Conferences and Classes Liza Burney, Pranic Healing Practitioner and Instructor, is offering OHNA members a 20% discount on all Level 1 Pranic Healing Workshops. Liza was a presenter at our 2014 conference, and taught us some basic techniques for self-care. I have been using them on a regular basis, and find Pranic Healing to be a quick and simple way of re-energizing myself and my clients. Additionally, I have found it is useful for reducing stress, and pain related to stress disorders. We now have a link to her webpage on our Join Us website page, in case you can t lay your hands on her web address (to the left on her business e-card). The ANHA conference is right around the corner! June 12 17, will include the preconferences. We ll travel quite a bit farther this year than we did last year! Hotel and conference registration is now open for what promises to be another holistically centered networking and educational opportunity. OHNA member, Diane Arney, is hosting a Clinical Acupressure 2 workshop at her Urban Farm Retreat March 11 15, It is being taught by Cathy Miller, and qualifies for 30 contact hours of continuing education credit for nurses, massage therapists and Asian Bodyworkers. 8 The Generosity Effect deonne wright This concept of generosity has been foremost in my experience for a while, and I ve been given a glimpse into the dynamic flow of this energetic process that is very expansive. I understand the idea of wanting to give to others. That has been my nature for all my life, as it is for many of us who are caregivers. But I m learning that generosity encompasses much more than just the act of giving. We tend to give and give and give until we have exhausted our capacity to give. Then, if we re fortunate to be tapped in to an holistic community, we are supported in learning the importance and value of balance in our lives; or maybe we learn it the hard way. We begin to understand the reason holistic practice focuses on self-care, and start learning how to open our hearts to receive. This practice is called a practice for the reason that getting proficient at it requires much repetitive action. Receiving with open-hearted gratitude, grace and humility swings the energy back in our direction and requires a different action from us. The epiphany for me was learning that when giving comes from a glad heart, the gratitude with which we give births gratitude within others. As we learn to receive the gift(s) of gratitude in return, a flow of energy is set in motion much like the ripples in a pond combined with the symbolism of infinity. The energy that has been initiated moves on and outward in an ever expansive motion, never ending, influencing far beyond our heart circle. This dynamic flow is what I ve come to understand as the Generosity Effect. We have the power to create a truly transformative dynamic flow of energy that begins and pulsates - within our own hearts, like the flow of a pendulum; giving in gratitude, receiving gratefully, giving again, ever radiating outward. May you live within the power of the Generosity Effect. Namaste Page 8
