2 COURSE DESCRIPTION Review of concepts required for licensure examination and entry into the practice of Professional Nursing. This includes application of National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) test plan, assessment of knowledge deficit, and remediation. This course lends itself to being a block or integrated approach. This course is a Web-Enhanced course, which will include classroom interaction and the utilization of an online learning management system. PRE-REQUISITES RNSG 1341 Common Concepts of Adult Health, RNSG 2360 Clinical, RNSG 1160 Clinical, RNSG 1251 Care of Childbearing Family, RNSG 2213 Mental Health Nursing, RNSG 2160 Clinical CO-REQUISITES RNSG 2221 Professional Nursing: Leadership and Management, RNSG 2361 Clinical, RNSG 1343 Complex Concepts of Adult Health, RNSG 1144 Nursing Skills II RNSG 2130, capstone course for the ADN program, must be taken as one of the final courses for the program. Demonstrate safe entry level nursing practice as defined in the four roles of the Differentiated Essential Competencies of Graduate of Texas Nursing Programs (DECs). Course Student Learning Outcomes 1. Apply cognitive knowledge in the successful completion of the exit exams. 2. Apply a cognitive knowledge (i.e. analysis, evaluation, synthesis) in the successful completion of defined content of the NCLEX-RN Exam. 3. Provide patient-centered holistic nursing care using evidence-based outcomes and the nursing process in a culturally congruent manner, collaborating with co-members of the health care team. 4. Establish continued competency of critical thinking in a systematic, problem-solving process in providing patient-centered holistic nursing care 5. 4 QSEN Competencies Using the institute of Medicine (2003) competencies for nursing, QSEN faculty have defined prelicensure and graduate quality and safety competencies for nursing and proposed targets for the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be developed in nursing pre-licensure programs for each competency as follows: Patient centered care Teamwork and Collaboration Evidence Based Practice Quality improvement Safety Informatics QSEN pursues strategies to build will and develop effective teaching approaches to assure that future graduates develop competencies in patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. SCANS or Core Curriculum Statement and Other Standards The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) was appointed by the Secretary of Labor to determine the skills our young people need to succeed in the world of work. The Commission's fundamental purpose is to encourage a high-performance economy characterized by high-skill, high-wage employment. The primary objective is to help teachers understand how curriculum and instruction must change to enable students to develop those high performance skills needed to succeed in the high performance workplace. SCANS have focused on one important aspect of schooling: what they called "learning a living" system. In 1991, they issued their initial report, What Work Requires of Schools. As outlined in that report, a highperformance workplace requires workers who have a solid foundation in the basic literacy and computational skills, in the thinking skills necessary to put knowledge to work, and in the personal qualities that make workers dedicated and trustworthy. High-performance workplaces also require other competencies: the ability to manage resources, to work amicably and productively with others. Use Information Skills/Acquire information a. Absences exceeding 12.5% may(2 days) result in the administrative withdrawal of the student from the course. 6

7 Daily classroom attendance records will be maintained. It is the responsibility of the student to sign the attendance record on a daily basis. Students will not sign for other students. Failure to sign the roll will constitute an absence for that day. Use black or blue ink only. A student who exceeds the allowed absences can be administratively dropped from the course and would not be allowed to progress in the ADN program. Student Assignments Practice Modules in HESI/Saunders Online Review Course ID to register online in Evolve site and access the HESI/Saunders Practice Modules is given below _cjose23_1004 Student Assessment / Methods of Evaluation The student will be required to complete a Pre-Test in the first week of the course on HESI Saunders Online to know the baseline competency and knowledge. However, this grade will not be counted towards the final course grade. 1. Specialty Exam 1: 20% Specialty exam 1 will be administered as scheduled in the calendar, which will contribute 20% of the total grade for the course. The conversion score given in the Hesi website will be used for the specialty exams. 2. Specialty Exam 2: 20% Specialty exam 2 will be administered as scheduled in the calendar, which will contribute 20% of the total grade for the course. The conversion score given in the Hesi website will be used for the specialty exams. 3. Uworld Exam: 10% There will be an Uworld exam as scheduled in the calendar and the grade of which will be calculated towards15% of the course grade. 4. Comprehensive Exam Online: 5% The comprehensive exam in HESI Saunders Online is mandatory, which will contribute 5% towards the final course grade 5. Standardized Hesi Exit Exam: 40% The conversion score given in the Hesi website will be used for the Hesi exit exams, which will contribute 40% towards the final course grade. A score of 900 or greater is considered as the passing grade. Only two Exit Exams will be provided. Requirement: A score of less than 900 will require successful completion of online HESI remediation. Second Exit Exam is mandatory if the first Exit Exam score is less than 900; The highest of the two scores will be used toward 40% of course grade. 6. Jurisprudence Exam: 5% This exam is related to the legal aspects of nursing and it is conducted online by Texas Board of Nursing, which is mandatory before you can schedule yourself for the NCLEX exam. This exam consists of 50 questions and you need to obtain 75% in order to pass this exam. After the exam please print and bring the 7

8 score report for calculating the final grade. Any score greater than 75% will contribute 5% towards the final course grade. The deadline to complete the jurisprudence exam is 11/10/17. Please visit the following website to access the resource material and to schedule for this exam Hesi Saunders Practice Modules The student will be required to complete each module of the HESI Saunders Online Review, which includes, but not limited to pre-test and ten practice module tests. Each online module exam will provide students with rationale after the completion. The deadline to complete each module is Sunday by 11.59pm on the scheduled week. 10 points/day will be deducted if the student fails to complete the module within the deadline. The Pre-Test and practice modules are mandatory and students will complete it as scheduled in the course calendar. The pre-test will provide an individualized study plan for completion of required modules. The online activities will be monitored by the instructor and appropriate feedback will be given to the student(s). Completion of practice modules will be a pass/fail activity. Instructor s Requirements As your instructor, it is my responsibility to: Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student grades are to be derived Facilitate an effective learning environment through class activities, discussions, and instructions Description of any special projects or assignments Inform students of policies such as attendance, withdrawal, tardiness and make up procedures Provide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any special projects or assignments Arrange to meet with individual students after the exams as needed for remediation To be successful in this class, it is the student s responsibility to: Attend class and participate in class discussions and activities Read and comprehend the modules online 8

The student must re-enroll to receive credit. COM (Completed) is given in non-credit and continuing education courses. To compute grade point average (GPA), divide the total grade points by the total number of semester hours attempted. The grades IP, COM and I do not affect GPA. The HCC system grading scale may be viewed on the HCCS Student Handbook. Recommended Textbook: Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination 6th Edition by Linda Anne Silvestri A. Remediation Policy and Procedure: Remediation, Testing Protocol, and Computer Based Testing Policy: Remediation will be available to any student enrolled in RNSG 2130 who expresses the need for this service, and who are experiencing difficulties with the course work, and course requirements. Mandatory remediation will be given based on the following: Failure to obtain passing grade in the Hesi specialty exams (non-conversion score of less than 900) 9

10 Failure to obtain passing grade in the Hesi exit exam (non-conversion score of less than 900) Failure to obtain passing grade in the Uworld exam (Less than 80%) Failure to meet course requirements and course work (completing the practice modules) As recommended by faculty Procedure: To remediate is to remedy the deficiencies. Remediation procedure is as follows 1. Upon the initial failure the instructor will meet with the student and discuss the required remediation activities, and refer to remediation / retention specialist as needed. 2. Student will complete remediation on Hesi website for Hesi exams 3. Student will meet with the remediation specialist if referred by the instructor and complete the assigned Quizzes and practice questions 4. The student will attend a meeting with the advisor if recommended by the instructor 5. Student will attend a remediation session for study skills, time management, and test taking skills for nursing students if recommended by the instructor 6. No student shall be allowed to sit for a subsequent exam until remediation tasks have been completed. Remediation on Hesi website and other assigned tasks such as quizzes/practice questions are mandatory prior to taking the next exam. 7. Student shall be required to repeat the above steps for each exam failure 8. Remediation / Retention Coach, Lori Evans is also available in Suite 330. It is expected that students will make an appointment with the faculty or designated member of the faculty and come to the remediation sessions prepared. Students may receive extra assignments to facilitate their learning (NOT FOR EXTRA CREDIT). B. Testing Protocol: Pre-assessment test, Practice module exams, and Comprehensive exam are available online in Evolve site for students, and are mandatory. Inability to complete these requirements may result in failure of the course. Repeated incompletion of practice modules and exams may result in counseling. HESI Specialty exams and HESI exit exams will be conducted in computer lab on the first floor. The allotted time period for HESI Specialty exams and Uworld exam will be 2 hours and HESI exit exams will be 4 hours. HCC picture ID is required for entrance into all exams. The instructor controls the options of seating arrangement, movement, leaving the room, and stopping of exam for violation of scholastic dishonesty. Late entry will not be permitted. Students will be able to review the exam immediately following completion of the HESI Specialty exams and HESI exit exams. To insure quality education and equality to all students in the Associate Degree Nursing Program, the following special conditions will apply during testing situations. 1. The instructor controls the options of seating arrangement, movement, leaving the room, and stopping an exam for violation of scholastic honesty. 2. Books, papers, notebooks, personal belongings, watches, electronic devices, hats, palm pilots or cell phones are not allowed in testing area. 3. Any verbal or nonverbal communication between students during a testing situation will 10

11 be grounds for the termination of the testing. A grade of zero will be recorded and averaged into the final grade. 4. Should a student need to communicate with the instructor, remain seated and raise hand. 5. Any infractions of scholastic honesty will be grounds for dismissal from the program. 6. If scratch paper is requested during a Hesi exam, the paper must be returned to the proctor after finishing the exam. The scratch paper will be shredded. 7. All questions or concerns about the test must be formally submitted in writing/ to the instructor prior to the next exam. All specialty benchmarking exams and exit exams are given by computer testing only. Computer Based Testing: All Houston Community College System ADN program exams will be computer based to prepare the students to meet the NCLEX testing requirements. Paper-pencil versions of exams would constitute a security risk and is not available for standardized exams. This is an intentional design of the exams so that the computerized exams more closely emulate the NCLEX exams. Keep in mind that the NCLEX is a CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) and is not delivered in paper form. Reasonable and appropriate accommodations will be provided for the students with relevant documented disability as documented by the ADA counselor. 12 Reduction of Risk Potential 9-15% Physiological Adaptation 11-17% ADN Handbook Students are responsible for reading ADN Handbook within 7 days of start of the semester and complying with the policies and procedures listed in the current Associate Degree Nursing Program Student Handbook. ADN handbook is posted in the Eagle Online/canvas. Students will read the HCC student handbook as well to be certain that they understand HCCS policies/procedures, which also includes refunds and withdrawals from the course. Please use the link below to access the student handbook Academic Dishonesty: A student who is academically dishonest is, by definition, not showing that the coursework has been learned, and that student is claiming an advantage not available to other students. The instructor is responsible for measuring each student's individual achievements and also for ensuring that all students complete appropriate learning requirements on time. Thus in our system the instructor has teaching, grading, and enforcement roles. You are expected to be familiar with Houston Community College s Policy on Academic Honesty, found in the catalog. What that means is: If you are charged with an offense, pleading ignorance of the rules will not help you. Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Penalties and/or disciplinary proceedings may be initiated by College System officials against a student accused of scholastic dishonesty. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. Cheating includes: Copying from another students computer/test paper or assignments; Using materials not authorized by the person giving the test; Collaborating with another student during a test without authorization; Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or soliciting in whole or part the contents of a test that has not been administered; Bribing another person to obtain a test that is to be administered. Plagiarism means the appropriation of another s work and the unacknowledged incorporation of that work in one s own written work offered for credit. Collusion mean the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work offered for credit. Possible punishments for academic dishonesty may include a grade of 0 or F in the particular assignment, failure in the course, and/or recommendation for probation or dismissal from the College System (See Student Handbook). 12

13 Professional Behavior As your instructor and (you) as a student in this class, it is our shared responsibility to develop and maintain a positive learning environment for everyone. Your instructor takes this responsibility very seriously and will inform members of the class if their behavior makes it difficult for him/her to carry out this task. As a fellow learner, you are asked to respect the learning needs of your classmates and assist your instructor in achieving this critical goal. Password Security: Students will not share log in information with other students for the practice modules and exams, which is a violation of the Honesty Policy. HCC Course Withdrawal Policy: If you feel that you cannot complete this course, you will need to withdraw from the course prior to the final date of withdrawal. Before, you withdraw from your course; please take the time to meet with the instructor to discuss why you feel it is necessary to do so. The instructor may be able to provide you with suggestions that would enable you to complete the course. Your success is very important. Beginning in fall 2007, the Texas Legislature passed a law limiting first time entering freshmen to no more than SIX total course withdrawals throughout their educational career in obtaining a certificate and/or degree. If you plan on withdrawing from your class, you MUST contact a HCC counselor or your professor prior to withdrawing (dropping) the class for approval and this must be done PRIOR to the withdrawal deadline to receive a W on your transcript. **Final withdrawal deadlines vary each semester and/or depending on class length, please visit the online registration calendars, HCC schedule of classes and catalog, any HCC Registration Office, or any HCC counselor to determine class withdrawal deadlines. Remember to allow a 24-hour response time when communicating via and/or telephone with a professor and/or counselor. Do not submit a request to discuss withdrawal options less than a day before the deadline. If you do not withdraw before the deadline, you will receive the grade that you are making in the class as your final grade. It is important that every student understands and conforms to respectful behavior while at HCC. Sexual misconduct is not condoned and will be addressed promptly.
