This year the 34 th Annual Awards Banquet was held at the Egan Convention Center on November 12, ANTHC s Victorie Heart, MS, RN, Director of Community Health Aide Program/Rural Health attended the award ceremony and was able to say a few words about the program before the EMS Provider Award was announced. The presentation was made by John Dickens, ACEMS Officer-at-Large and Dr. Ward Hurlburt, Director, Division of Public Health, State of Alaska. In recognition of their life-saving care to a patient with a gunshot wound in December 2010, the EMS Provider this issue Oct Certifications P.20 Calendar P.44 Summary of Board Actions P.65 Behavioral Health Aide Forum P.86 DHAT Digital Storytelling P.10 echam Update P.11 Colorectal Cancer Screening P.12 Distance Learning Network P.14 Award was presented to Danielle Reynolds, ETT, CHA-II and Brianne Gologergen, ETT, CHA-II both of Savoonga. In December 2010, both Danielle and Brianne responded to a patient with a gunshot wound. After the patient was taken to the Savoonga Clinic the on call doctor requested a medevac. Unfortunately the weather was extreme and aircraft was unable to respond. The on call doctor talked this team through a surgical procedure for inserting a chest tube using field expedient equipment. This procedure proved to save the patient s life. These two providers exemplify the Alaskan tradition of persevering against all odds, using field expedient methods to do their best to take care of the sick and injured.

Revision of the 2006 Alaska Community Health Aide/ Practitioner Manual was also discussed. A nice highlight from the meeting was seeing the 2012 CHAP Calendar with photos submitted by CHA/Ps for the CHAP Forum Photo Contests. A copy of the calendar will be sent to each Community Health Aide Clinic. October is also the time for change in Board leadership. As per CHAPCB Standards and Procedures, the Vice- Chair, Dr. Matthew West will be Chair for Dr. Karen O Neill was elected as the new Vice-Chair and Dorothy Hight, FNP was reelected as Secretary. 10 DHAT Digital Storytelling On October 4-5, DHAT students participated in ANTHC's first digital storytelling workshop to be taught entirely on the ipad. The workshop, with the topic of traditional foods, was led by Barbro Rakos, Program Manager, with the assistance of Margaret David and Meda DeWitt-Schleifman of Health Promotion/Disease Prevention. Barbro learned digital story facilitation skills by working with CHAP's Melany Cueva and participating in several storytelling workshops hosted by ANTHC. All DHAT students have ipads this year, due to the generous support of Healthy Alaskan Natives Foundation (HANF). Students used imovie and their own content to create 2-3 minute films about their own personal experiences with traditional foods. Through a creative process students activate critical self-reflection, empathy, and broad thinking skills, and come out of it with a strong understanding of why traditional foods are important to their lives. These skills are all beneficial for their transition into community caregivers. The growing library of ANTHC digital stories can be found on YouTube, at anthcdigitalstories channel. We are grateful to HANF for their generous support, and to CHAP for providing the digital storytelling framework. 11 echam Update for October 2011 Work began in earnest on the data conversion for CHAM content for the use in the Electronic CHAP Manual (echam). Multiple methods were explored for the starting format including PDF and InDesign. Dakota Systems, our Phase 1 Contractor says the data conversion is relatively straightforward and will give us a great deal of opportunity for automation of web and print creation. A contract for graphic design services was implemented with Resource Data. The graphic artist is Matt Johnson, who has prior experience with tribal organizations, has lived in Rural Alaska and is familiar with the CHAP program. We are looking forward to working with Matt on the design of the echam website. The next step is the development of requirements for the echam which will involve the creation and collection of echam User Stories. A User Story is a narrative in plain, everyday language that describes a Search for echam in the Search our current openecham Update WHO, WHAT and WHY scenario. A User describes some kind of scenario or situation they would find themselves in. The Programmers of the echam will use these stories to identify the functionality the echam will need. In preparation for the story collection process, and to orient Team members to the CHAP program, several Project Team members visited a Community Health Aide Clinic in Naknek in order to see how the CHA/Ps use the CHAM and how they interact with the RPMS Electronic Health Record in their community. The Project Steering Board met with the Project staff and Contractors for their quarterly meeting on November 7 th. The echam Coordinator position was posted on the ANTHC website on November 10 th For more details see the ANTHC job posting site at: Tell Us Your Story! The echam project needs your input. We are collecting user stories from CHA/Ps and other stakeholders about how the CHAM is used, and how we can create an efficient and user-friendly echam. Please join us for a teleconference to kick off this process and learn how you can help be part of a highly functional echam solution! Meeting Name: echam User Stories Collection Kickoff Meeting Invited By: Beth Fleisher (bfleischer@anthc.org) When: 12/15/ :00 AM - 11:30 AM Time Zone: (GMT-09:00) Alaska Conference Number(s): Participant Code: 5001# To join the meeting: Tell us your story! DLN staff and other content experts will attend a three day Learning Management System training which will allow a broader group of courses to be available in the Spring of Page 14 DLN What s New in Training! Two new classes for health aides are available on the Distance Learning Network this month; plus, a section of the popular Preceptorship Course will reopen. For Newly hired CHA-Trainees: On Nov. 1, the first online asynchronous Pre-Session course opened to new hires around the state. Currently, 10 learners from six health aide programs have enrolled. All units of the 2008 Pre- Session curriculum are addressed in this online course. Quizzes, games and other types of learner-instructor interactions are used in order to achieve objectives. The program supervisor for each learner will complete the skills training and checklist. When all objectives have been completed, each learner will receive a certificate of completion. Of the 10 enrollees, two are Coordinator Instructor/Supervisor Instructors who will receive first-hand experience with the DLN and see the world from the perspective of a new health aide. This online course is one of several ways a newly hired CHA-T can complete Pre-Session, giving more flexibility to programs in successfully completing Session I pre-requisites. This course is open to new enrollees throughout the quarter. CE for CHA/Ps: This is a two-hour interactive continuing education course aimed toward the experienced CHA/P who needs to know the latest national flu recommendations, the state s plans this season, and the most recent update on immunizations for the CHAM. Influenza Update covers: Updates on influenza vaccines Answers to questions on influenza, seasonal and H1N1 Reliable resources for community, patient education Direction for administering FluMist, and several other self-tests Course is open now and taking enrollments throughout this quarter. Preceptorship: Another section of Precepting in the CHA Program Part I for new (or ongoing) clinicians will open for those participating in preceptorships for CHP credentialing or recredentialing. This course is now open for enrollment. To enroll in any of these courses, please contact Saeng Yabut at ANTHC, , or syabut@anthc.org. Dorothy Hight, FNP Distance Learning Coordinator
