FROM THE DON S DESK The weather is warm and the skies are blue. What a wonderful time of the year! With Christmas on the countdown, it is almost unbelievable how quickly the year has flown. The Christmas lunches have all been scheduled. We encourage you to purchase your tickets from the reception as soon as you can. What an exciting afternoon the Sports Carnival was. Richard will share more of the events of the day, in his section. There were quite a few residents on the Jindalee team who tell me it was a fabulous event. I would like to commend Richard, Kate and their team on how great the newsletter looks these days with all the photos. The orchids were simply magnificent! Director of Nursing (DON) Jo Costuna-Temple A few of our staff are back from long holiday stints. Destinations included London, The Philippines, Paris and Japan. Welcome back to you all. On a sad note, Nathan Reid leaves us this week to work closer to home, in Crookwell. We wish you all the very best in your new job and thank you for your 6 years of dedicated service. The next newsletter will be a Christmas Wishes edition. Have a lovely few weeks! Kind Regards, Jo, Pam & Chris (Director & Deputy Directors of Nursing) Page 2
HEALTH & LEISURE REPORT Health & Leisure Team Front: Kate, Richard, Odile & Leanne Welcome to the November edition of Jindajabber. The weather is warming up and one of the busiest seasons of the year is upon us again. Our annual Melbourne Cup celebrations will be taking place on Tuesday 7 th. Residents and staff will join together on the wings and in the Bush Lounge to watch the race and enjoy the atmosphere. We always have a great time so if you are not busy on the day, you are more than welcome to come and join us. Back: Kate, Adrian, Michael & Tracey (Left to Right) In November we are looking forward to an outing to Goulburn. Several of the residents have expressed an interest in travelling to the area, so we will be heading off on Wednesday 15 th, with a stop for morning tea at Collector and lunch at the Soldier s Club in Goulburn. Family and friends are invited to attend. Bookings can be made at reception. Jindalee s Christmas parties will be taking place on the 19 th, 20 th and 21 st of December. Please look for the invitation in this copy of Jindajabber (Page 18-19) and book with reception or one of the Health and Leisure team members. In the past, the Christmas Lights Trip has been a popular event in the lead up to Christmas. This year we are offering the choice of two nights, December 12 th and 13 th, with limited wheelchair access on the bus. Please indicate your interest to the Health and Leisure team, if this is a trip you would like to attend. At the start of December we will have a special Christmas edition of The Jindajabber, until then. Kind Regards, Richard, Kate, Leanne, Michael, Adrian, Tracey, Odile & Kate Page 3
MONTHS IN REVIEW 100th Birthday Party On September 24 th Ivy Curruthers, a resident from Frangipani, celebrated her 100 th birthday. Family and friends gathered at Jindalee for the occasion, with a party in the Bush Lounge. Ivy was also honoured at the Senior Citizens Birthday Lunch, which she attended with other residents. Gardening The warmer weather has the Jindalee gardens coming out in full bloom, and many of our residents who have an interest in gardening also have some spectacular blooms on their balconies. Mr Les Humphrey who resides on Hoya has grown some truly amazing orchids. We would like to feature them in this issue of our humble newsletter so that we can all appreciate his amazing gardening skills! Page 4
Lowes Fashion Show During September, Lowes visited Jindalee. We held a fashion parade to show off some of the new styles coming out this season. Staff and residents did some modelling for us and we had a small afternoon tea while shopping took place. Many of the residents enjoyed looking at the clothing and the fun of the parade was obvious. Importantly, look out Elle Macpherson and Hugh Jackman! Page 5
YMCA Senior Sports Carnival On October 19 th, residents and staff from Jindalee attended the YMCA Seniors Sports Carnival, held at The Archery Centre in Tuggeranong. In the lead up to the Carnival, Michelle, a student from the University of Canberra, came each week to assist the staff with training sessions for the residents. On the day we had a wonderful time. Our Javelin team won a gold medal! Jindalee was placed 5 th out of the 15 facilities who competed this year. Well done to all the residents who took part. Page 6

Coffee at the National Gallery Coffee outings in September and October were to the National Gallery Café. The residents and staff who attended have reported that the cakes, scones and coffees were excellent at this venue. We also had a short walk through the gallery viewing artwork and sculptures. Restaurant Outing Residents and staff recently dined at Rodney s Cafe at Pialligo for our regular restaurant outing. The food was delicious and the surroundings very eye catching. A number of residents combined the outing with a shopping excursion, and some beautiful potted plants now adorn resident s rooms. Page 9

Floriade Bus Outings During Floriade, Jindalee residents were able to drive through and admire the blooms on two separate occasions. The weather was kind to us this year and the flowers made for a spectacular display. A favourite attraction at Floriade this year was a very life like elephant, which several of the residents have suggested we adopt! Page 11
Senior Lunch Outing In September, a number of residents attended the Senior Citizens Birthday Lunch at the Seniors Centre in Turner. This monthly outing has proven to be a very popular one, with delicious food and friendly faces to welcome us on each visit. Page 12
Holiday Slide show Japan During September, Richard Cummins, Health and Leisure Coordinator, and his family travelled to Japan for a wonderful holiday. The residents were able to share in this experience via a slide show that Richard put together with afternoon tea. Thank you Richard for sharing your adventures with the residents and staff. We are sure that you will be returning to Japan again. Page 13
PARO Robot Seal PARO is a therapeutic robot in the form of a baby seal. They retail for around $ and have been available in nursing homes in Japan and throughout Europe since Covered in artificial antibiotic fur they feature a hard inner skeleton under which are dual processors that control proprietary software for behaviour generation and voice recognition systems. This built-in intelligence provides psychological, physiological and social benefits through physical interaction with human beings. PARO the seal not only imitates animal behaviour, it also responds to light, sound, temperature, touch and posture. Over time PARO develops its own character. As a result, it becomes a living cherished pet that provides relaxation, entertainment, and companionship to the owner. Jindalee has a PARO on loan for a 2 week trial. We have already had some very positive responses from the residents. If the trial is successful we will look into ways of making it possible to purchase our own PARO to join us at the facility. 30 PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS BY RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our residents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement from residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered by the staff at the Resident s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We investigate all complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire. Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation. Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern. Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse, placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee. The Director of Nursing (DON) or delegates review all the forms. They investigate the cause of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee s Policy and Procedures are contributing factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the complainant (if not anonymous). All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator s Office. External support groups can also offer assistance Aged Care Complaints Commissioner Complaints Resolution: enquiries@agedcarecomplaints.gov.au Website: Address: Aged Care Complaints Commissioner, GPO BOX 9848, Canberra, ACT ADACAS (02) Page 30
