1 Operations Manager s Message: Can you believe its autumn? It will slowly get colder, and darker, and before you know it, it will be Winter! Change of season can be a good thing. Change itself can be a good thing, Challenging but also rewarding. Without change, things stay the same, without change we may not grow. Seasonal changes are forced on us, but in a business you can sometimes protect yourself from change so much that you miss opportunities. On a positive note, change can keep you fresh, keep you alert, and open to opportunities!! On February , SummitCare Randwick had an unannounced visit which is most commonly known as an assessment contact or review audit that is carried out by an assessment team without prior notification to the approved provider by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency Unannounced assessment contacts are conducted in monitoring homes and their performance against the Accreditation Standards. Every home receives at least one unannounced assessment contact each year and I am proud to announce that SummitCare did extremely well exceeding all domains that were reviewed. Congratulations to the SummitCare Team and thank you to all the relatives and residents for their positive participation. 2 Flu vaccinations The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone from six months of age, but is available free under the National Immunisation Program for people who face a high risk from influenza and its complications including people aged 65 years and over All residents are encouraged to get the flu vaccine and your GP will prescribe this on your medication chart. For relatives to receive your influenza vaccination, visit your local doctor or immunisation provider. It is important to note that while the vaccine is free, a consultation fee may apply. Summitcare provides free flu vaccines for all staff. EN and AIN students In partnership with Registered Training Organisations, SummitCare Randwick is involved in training our future nurses with the commencement of clinical placement for Enrolled Nurses commencing 1 March At SummitCare we prepare students to work in residential aged care facilities, client homes or community groups with older people. Our qualified staff will help students develop the skills required to manage and take care of Australia s senior citizens through theoretical and practical learning. The knowledge they gain in the classroom is complemented by hands-on activities or practical workplace training in our facility. The clinical work placement is a great opportunity for students to gain real life experience in the field and be introduced to a potential employer. Te-Ana Huriwai Manager Care Services 2

3 Staff News: Amy Palma We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our newly graduated Enrolled Nurse Amy Palma. Amy was one of our very diligent AINs who has transitioned into the role of an Enrolled Nurse. Fortunately for us, Amy has committed to further developing her skills and sharing her knowledge with the care team and residents at SummitCare Randwick. We support Amy with this professional milestone and wish her very success with her ongoing professional development. Edita Nykl It is with great sadness and a heavy heart, that we farewell our wonderful Sr. Edita Nykl. Edita has dedicated her life and expertise to Randwick in many senior roles however most recently as the Assistant Manager of Care and Services. During her time at SummitCare Randwick, Edita has seen a lot of change, trained many staff, cared for an abundance of residents but most of all captured all of our hearts. It s a pity to see, one of our best leave. Your proactive approach and willingness to make a difference to those around you is truly commendable. Please join us in wishing Edita well in her future endeavours and to thank her for her service and many contributions to SummitCare Randwick and the organisation as a whole over the last 15 and more years. We will miss you immensely and wish you and your loved ones all the health, wealth, love and happiness that the world has to offer. 4 Updating the Wardrobe With the cooler weather approaching, it might be timely for families to review their loved ones clothing, given the limited wardrobe space we have in our rooms. Please give consideration to the season and clothing for outdoor activities. SummitCare recognises the rights of residents, relatives and concerned others to make a complaint. This feedback enhances communication and helps us to understand residents and families expectations. We want to work together with residents, families and friends to provide care that meets your needs all day, every day. Your feedback and comments are valuable ways to help us achieve this goal. The Feedback Management System is outlined in a booklet available in the foyer or by asking any staff member. Please use the Complaint Form in this booklet to make a complaint. 5 Housekeeping: Sign In/Out Book: SummitCare Randwick has a Sign In/Out book for residents and also one for visitors. We ask that visitors and residents record in these books when they enter and exit the centre for two key reasons: 1. It helps make sure the resident s movements are known 2. In the event of an emergency we are aware of everyone who is present in the centre These books are kept at Reception. Please ensure that you sign in/out each time you visit. Access Codes: The access code to the facility and also La Perouse are changed at the beginning of each new season. Please speak to the Registered Nurse in charge who will provide authorised people with the new access code. Maintenance Logs: The Reactive Maintenance Log is located on the Ground Floor at the sign in desk (opposite reception) These logs are to be used by residents, relatives, visitors, staff etc. to identify issues with building, equipment and or machinery. They are actioned by the Maintenance Officer. The logs need to be fully completed including identifying the priority of the issue i.e. urgency. If the issue is considered to be urgent the Registered Nurse in Charge and or a member of the Local Leadership Team (LLT) i.e. Operations Manager, Manager Accommodation Services, Manager Care Services need to be notified so that any potential WHS risk can be eliminated. Catering Services: SummitCare Randwick continues to offer a variety of meals to suit residents dietary needs. We also realise how important is to plate the meal properly while serving. Our catering services strive to achieve the perfect meal where residents are satisfied with the quality and have enjoyed the dining experience and we are continually working to enhance the dinning experience. Our catering staff wear green hats and aprons during meal service and after every lunch service the cook will walk around and make sure that everyone is satisfied and happy with their meals. 6 Leisure and Lifestyle: For us it is very important that we provide a fun and positive environment with proper planning towards upcoming events. At the end of each month we finalize the calendar for the following month with activities arranged for special occasions. Over the summer, we had events such as Kids Giving Back, Residents Christmas Party, Australia Day and Valentine's Day. Christmas time is a the time of the year were the LLOs and management put all the efforts towards a big,tasty and dynamic celebration,always making sure that people living in our facility make this month of the year a big and special date on in their calendars. This year wasn't the exception. We celebrated with a special Christmas singing and juggling performance and a traditional Christmas pudding that complement the occasion. A special group of school kids delighted the residents with special-yummy-scones made specially for them and with individual and group interactions that make the day pleasurable. In January, Australia Day was full of celebrations and music for the occasion. A special craft was made by the residents to decorate the facility for the unique event. February Valentine's day was full of love, romance and craft. The residents decorated love hearts that were displayed around the facility to show off their artistic abilities. Upcoming celebrations include St Patrick s Day, Harmony Day, Easter and Anzac Day. Please watch the notice board for flyers with details of events! 7 Physiotherapy: Hello Everybody! Here at SummitCare Randwick, we have prepared some unique and easy exercise for our residents to enjoy. During these past few weeks/months, we are happy seeing our residents more active with physio activities that were conducted by our Physio Assistant. As we are all aware, Mr. Shaun Chew, our Registered Physiotherapist comes here to our centre once a month to assess residents. Each resident has an individualised programme to be implemented by our Physio Assistants. Services offered are pain management, individual activity based on the resident profile, walking program, bar exercises and group exercise classes. The Physio Assistants at SummitCare Randwick are always here to assist all our residents and their family. Exercise classes are still going every Mondays and Thursdays at 09:00 hrs in the Dining Room ground floor conducted by Gerald, Tuesdays and Wednesdays by Amidu, Thursdays and Fridays 1 st floor by Rio. Please do not hesitate to ask one of our friendly staff if you have any suggestions comments and compliments. We are always here to help.
