2 March of Dimes NICU Family Support was created 10 years ago to: Provide information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home, and in the event of a newborn death Contribute to NICU staff professional development Promote the philosophy of family-centered care throughout NICUs Multiple services are available in hospitals through NICU Family Support, including the: Chapter-managed, March of Dimes-staffed NICU Family Support Program, NICU Family Support License Program, NICU Family Support Center (Kiosk) and ShareYourStory.org. NICU Family Support is in more than 112 hospitals across the country and is offered in every state, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. NCU Family Support was launched at Franklin Square Medical Center in 2007 and continues to enhance family-centered care and support for families each year. The following is a comprehensive overview of our program in NICU Family Support Activities 2011: Total Number of NICU Admissions: 300 Parent Care Kits distributed to families: 252 Parent Activities/Parent Education Hours offered: 67 Family members who attended Parent Activities 308 Number of NFS Volunteers participating: 8 2

3 Parent Hours Offered for Family Education, Support and Comfort Themed Parent Socials, including Ice Cream Social, Mother s Day Brunch, Family Pizza and Craft Nights, Family photo sessions, Thanksgiving Pie Day and photos with Santa. Attendees included former NICU parents. Weekly Parent Hours featuring: o Angela Ferrera, Speech Pathologist, Developmental Follow-up Clinic: Your Baby s Development o Kathleen Stahl, Lactation Consultant : Kangaroo Care and Breastfeeding in the NICU o Eileen Wynchgram, NNP: Infection Control in the NICU o Sara McJilton, RN: Safe Sleep o Barb Nosek, Mt Washington nurse liaison: Transitioning to Mt. Washington o Sharon Cox, RN: NICU 101 o Melissa Buchanan, March of Dimes NICU Family Support Specialist: Risk Reduction; Ten Important Things to Remember o Meghan McNamara, NICU Social Worker and Melissa Buchanan, March of Dimes NICU Family Support Specialist: Happiest Baby on the Block o NICU Graduates: Inspiration and Support from Parents who Have been there NICU Family Support Modules 3

4 Modules are comprehensive programs focused on a specific topic area. They include: parent education, parent comfort and staff education. Modules are selected by the CNAC (Chapter NICU Advisory Committee). Our modules include: Transitions The goal of the transitions module is to address the informational and emotional needs of families when transitioning, particularly to another hospital but also to home. The NICU Family Support program hosts monthly parent hours in order for NICU parents to learn more about the step-down unit and meet a staff member from the new hospital. Extended Family Empowerment The goal of the extended family empowerment module is to address the informational and emotional needs of all members of the family in the NICU, empower them to participate in their baby s care, be an advocate for their newborn, and allow all family members to participate as a member of the health care team. In 2011, Franklin Square expanded its family presence policy to allow parents to spend time with their baby 24 hours a day. 4

5 Photography The goal of the photography module is to weave photography throughout the NICU experience to break down barriers between parent and child, and provide lasting keepsakes for families. Volunteer professional photographers held 15 family photo sessions for 98 families. In November of 2011, the NICU Wall of Hope was unveiled. 5

6 NICU Family Support 2011 Highlights Constructed a NICU Wall of Hope to provide comfort and hope to NICU families. The wall featured 8 NICU graduates in various stages of their NICU experience Constructed a photo gallery of NICU reunion pictures in the family comfort room. Trained 3 NICU graduate volunteers to provide parent-to-parent support Trained 40 nurses from 6 area hospitals in developmental and family centered care. Trained 2 NICU staff members to teach the Happiest Baby on the Block, a class that teaches parents to calm crying and help their newborns sleep longer. Franklin Square Hospital conducted a NICU family Reunion with over 100 families at CCBC-Essex Conducted phone surveys to illicit feedback on transitioning to a step-down unit Goals for NICU Family Support Construct and distribute a comprehensive NICU Parent s Guide to 100% of families. Develop and distribute a transition guide for 100% of incoming transfers from Harbor Hospital. Update the current Mt. Washington packet to include the most up-to-date information as well as a FAQ list from families for families. Recruit at least 2 NICU parent advisors to participate in the planning of the new NICU. Increase volunteer participation in NICU holiday activities. Hold quarterly parent hours led by NICU graduate parents. 6
