4 Health & Safety Risk Assessment Master Class NPW is running a training day on risk assessments to help those who have the responsibility of assessing risk. The session will include types of risk assessments, the 5-step process, what is expected of you (the responsible person) and how to fulfil those requirements. Head teachers must manage health and safety on school premises and as such delegate responsibility to competent staff to undertake risk assessments in order to control the various risks within the school. You must control and assess the risks on your premises by using the 5-step process: 1. Identify the hazards 2. Who might be harmed and how 3. Evaluate the risks and prevention 4. Record significant findings Working at heights Schools must ensure that employees are appropriately trained to carry out their work safely. This also includes ensuring that other staff are supervised by somebody competent to work at heights. This includes an understanding of how to undertake a working at height risk assessment, how to use and access the appropriate equipment safely and how to ensure that employees can reduce their risk of falls from height. This new NPW Working at Height training course will assist you in complying with the Work at Height Regulations 2005 by providing the necessary information needed to be able to successfully deal with working at height risks and control measures. This half day course will show staff the correct technique for manual handling that avoids accidents and injury. Fire Warden Training The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires employers to have a strategy to evacuate people (staff, visitors and children) within the building. Topics covered include: Fire prevention and your role in the event of a fire What to do if a fire breaks out and how people react in fire situations Emergency evacuation procedures Safety features within buildings and Safe evacuation and fire assembly Basic principles of fire Legislation and fire risk assessment requirements Control measures to minimise the risk of fire and Structural measures to prevent spread of fire and smoke Fire detection, fire warning and fire fighting equipment and how to use fire extinguishers Requirements for fire plans & Emergency evacuation procedures COSHH Awareness In partnership with Strongroots Training we are pleased to deliver this new ½ day COSSH Awareness training. This is a must for all staff with a responsibility for storing, using, handling or transporting hazardous substances or biological agents or for those overseeing staff and contractors with this responsibility. What is COSHH and how to implement COSHH Regulations What is a hazardous substance / biological agent The risks and damage caused by exposure How to avoid exposure through safe handling and storage Procedure if contamination occurs Assessing and creating action plans CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Safety Everyone who works with food (teaching and support staff) has a special safeguarding responsibility to ensure the food they prepare, wok with or serve is safe to eat. Grainne Sheehy, NPW Catering Development Officer, offers extra provision, resource and school staff working with food that are not catering team members an opportunity to achieve the CIEG Foundation Certificate in Food Safety Award. The course content will cover broad concepts of food hazards and how they can be contained and will be assessed by a test paper of 30 multiple choice test questions, culminating in the examination and awarding of the CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Safety. Please note we can also carry out this training at your school/nursery for a minimum of 8 participants. Introduction to Health & Safety at Work Briefing for Head Teachers and Senior School Managers This is a training course that has been primarily designed for new head teachers, heads of establishments and senior school managers which explains the Health and Safety Management Systems used in schools and other educational settings. The course may benefit deputy head teachers acting in the absence of the head teacher during the school year or other members of the leadership team with a health and safety remit. Legionella and Asbestos Briefing Controlling Risk in Schools Head teachers have a responsibility to maintain a clean, safe educational environment. The Legionella bacteria is a perennial problem that is spread through contaminated water systems; it is a school duty to control outbreaks of Legionnaires. Head Teachers also have a duty to manage and control the exposure risk of any asbestos in school. There are high penalties for asbestos exposure. NPW is providing a briefing session to raise awareness of Legionella risks and how to control asbestos in your school. Experienced trainers will offer advice and guidance on the prevention and control of legionella in your school and how to manage asbestos risks. The session will include information on what legionella is and how it spreads; what is expected of you and how to fulfil those requirements; you will be briefed on the latest asbestos issues and how to write an asbestos management plan. 7 Educational Visits Training Role of the EVC It is crucial that all schools have an appropriate designated member of staff to co-ordinate Educational Visits in schools (of all types). The member of school staff designated as the EVC should be specifically competent in key areas, including: Health and safety policy and procedures, common sense and proportionate approaches to managing risk benefits. 9 First Aid Training NPW First Aid courses are bespoke and tailored to meet the needs of schools. All are delivered by Strong Roots Training who only use trainers that have past professional contact with young people (such as youth workers, SEN staff, etc.). Unlike some training providers, our courses are regulated by Qualsafe, an Ofqual recognised Awarding Organisation, established by experts in the first aid training industry. Strict limits also apply on the number of trainees on courses at any one session. This means we always excel in quality. We are able to provide the training at your school to fit around you on days of your choice; or on prearranged dates at NPW offices, Francis House, Plaistow, London E.13 9PJ detailed in the attachment. All courses undertaken at Francis House include refreshments and lunch on each day. Prefer the Training held at your School? First Aid at Work - (3 day) This 3 day course provides the comprehensive training needed to become a confident first aider at work, giving you the practical experience and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies. First Aid at Work Refresher (2 days) This 2 day course updates the first aid skills for people who need to renew their existing statutory 3 day first aid at work certificate and whose existing certificate is still valid.* * Whilst the course will cover some basic paediatric elements if your school requires the full Paediatric First Aid at Work qualification you should choose to attend either the Paediatric First Aid at Work (2 day) course OR the New Combined First at Work Plus Paediatric Training (3 days) ** It is a requirement that Refresher First Aid at Work Training should be completed within 6 weeks of the expiry of the existing full 3 day first aid at work certificate. Extensions can be sought if: The time between the certificate expiry and the course is 7 10 weeks. The time between the certificate expiry and the course is 11 weeks or more The trainee must evidence refresher training each year (basic first aid). The trainee cannot evidence refresher training then they will need to attend the full 3 day FAW course. Paediatric First Aid (2 day) In line with Ofsted requirements for early years this 2 day course is for those who might have to identify and manage emergency situations or manage minor everyday occurrences when looking after children (defined as up to puberty). This qualification meets Ofsted requirements for those working in early year s settings. The current EYFS statutory framework requires at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate to be on the premises at times when children are present. 11 First Aid Training (Cont.) New Combined First Aid at Work plus Paediatric Training (3 Days) This new 3 day course is designed to give the first aider the skills and knowledge to manage first aid incidents in the workplace setting. It includes the required time allocation for both the Paediatric First Aid Training Course and the First Aid at Work Training course, satisfying Ofsted requirements. The course is run as one event but participants will be awarded two qualifications with two certificates issued, Level 3 First Aid at Work and Level 3 Paediatric First Aid. The course content is intense and more in-depth and targeted towards the adult, child and baby. The course times for this training will be: 09: pm. Homework will also be required. It is strongly recommended that trainees have had previous training and experience in first aid due to the intensive nature of the course. 17 Governance Making the Most of Data Competency Framework Feature 2b (SKILLS) Schools are data rich environments. It's becoming increasingly important for governors to be able use a wide range of data sources to really judge how well their school is doing. This session will enable governors to make sense of data on attainment and pupil progress. It will look at different sources of data, subject performance, attainment and progress of pupil groups, school context and attendance. One data source is Analyse School Performance (ASP), the replacement for RAISE online; this will be explored during the session to help governors think about the strategic use of data to increase the effectiveness of their schools. Under current data protection laws, the governing board, as the body with corporate responsibility for managing the school, has ultimate responsibility for matters relating to data protection. Governors and Trustees should be aware of the coming changes and how to ensure that their school is compliant. (KNOWLEDGE) Competency Framework Competency 2a This session will cover new developments in the secondary curriculum, including assessment, reporting and floor targets. It will look at Progress 8, how schools have amended their curriculum to suit the current political and economic climate and changes to the way we work. 21 Schools HR Safer Recruitment Training Participants will: Look at how safer recruitment fits within the wider context of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Look at the importance of following a consistent and thorough process to obtain relevant information about each job applicant. Consider the importance of using structured interviews, and pre-employment checks on selected candidates. Examine the need for ongoing awareness and vigilance and consider how organisations can develop and maintain an environment that deters and prevents abuse and challenges inappropriate behaviour. Participants will be expected to complete an assessment to test their understanding of the training material. Who is the course for?
