Welcome Letter Congratulations on being selected for your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team! The goal of this team is to work together to effectively respond to medical emergencies. In the event of a medical emergency, you and your colleagues will be well prepared to respond to a sick child (or adult!). Because this is a team, take comfort in knowing that you are never alone! In adopting the Code Ana Program, which includes the development and implementation of a Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Protocol, more folks at school will be aware of what a medical emergency looks like and how to get help. THANK YOU for being the first first-responders! This training manual will help you and your teammates develop then implement your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Plan. Take notes as we build on pre-existing protocols. No need to re-create the wheel! Let s do this! Dr. Hoyt and the Code Ana Team 3
The Code Ana Core Response Objectives Your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Plan needs to meet the following core objectives: Code Ana Core Response Objectives Activate/announce Code Ana to mobilize the Code Ana Response Team to the site of emergency Call 911 to request EMS Assess and care for the sick student Carry medication(s) to site Administer needed medication(s) Document medical care Call parents Prohibit mass movement within the school Direct nearby students away from the scene Support the team leader The remainder of this workbook will help guide you as your team develops and implements a plan that meets all these objectives! 4
The Basics: Know the Basic Algorithm and Medical Device Locations Before we create your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Plan, let s review the basic algorithm for responding to a medical emergency, like It s important to know where your school s medical devices epinephrine autoinjectors and AEDs are currently located in case there is an emergency before the Code Ana Program is fully implemented at your school. This may change as you progress through the Code Ana Program, but this is our starting point. Medical Devices at Your School Item Location Locked? Available after-hours? Available on field trips? Who is trained to use this? Stock Epi Auto- Injector AED 5
Current School Emergency Plans List your school s current emergency alert systems and describe how these are activated and how the school responds (e.g. lock-down, crisis team responds, Current Emergency Plans at Your School Fire Alert Mechanism of Activation School Response Intruder Weather Your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Plan will need to include a method by which the Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team is activated and advised to respond to the site. Will your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Plan involve an intercom announcement of the event or a silent activation of the team? 6
Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team Roles Your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team may include all the roles in the table below or you may need to adjust the roles to work within your school s resources. Regardless of the number of team members, the team must Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team Members and Objectives Member Responsible for the following Code Ana Response Objective(s) Leader Assess and care for the sick student Carry medication(s) to site Administer needed medication(s) Assistant Support the team leader Communciator Direct nearby students away from site Communicate with announcer Parent Liaison Call parents Recorder Document medical care Announcer Activate/Announce Code Ana Call 911 to request EMS Silence bell system EMS Escort Escort EMS to site The Code Ana Hub In many schools, there is a central location to which emergencies are called in by teachers and through which emergency protocols are activated. As in these situations, it is essential to have a Code Ana Hub the central location of Code Ana Activation so that the emergency response plan may be activated immediately. This Code Ana Hub is often located at the school s front desk as, many times, this position is the only location in the school that is manned 100% of the time during school hours. The Code Ana Announcer, who receives the phone call from school personnel reporting a medical emergency, mans the Code Ana Hub. The Code Ana Hub also is often the location to which EMS 7
Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team Roster Complete the table below with your school s team member objectives and the names of your members. Additional spaces have been included should you need Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team Objectives Assess and care for the sick student Carry medication(s) to site Administer needed medication(s) Support the team leader Direct nearby students away from site Communicate with announcer Call parents Document medical care Activate/announce Code Ana Call 911 to request EMS Silence bell system Escort EMS to site Your School s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Team Member Objectives Primary 1 st Alternate 2 nd Alternate Leader Assistant Communciator Parent Liaison Recorder Announcer EMS Escort 8
How to Respond in Risk Zones at Your School In the table below, list the locations at your school. Think about the areas at your school where medical events may occur. List how the Code Ana Medical Emergency Alert System would be activated from that area and how uninvolved students in that area will be managed. Risk Zones at Your School Location Cafeteria How is Code Ana activated here? How are uninvolved students managed here? Gymnasium Classroom Hallway Front of School Playground 9
Code Ana Personnel Logistics YOU are CRITICAL in making your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Plan EFFECTIVE! Let s now spend a few minutes ensuring that you will be available to respond to an emergency and that the students in your care at the time of a medical emergency are supervised by one of your colleagues. The table below will help you identify times during which students are in your care. During these times, you will need another adult to assume responsibility for your students so that you may respond to the Code Ana Medical Emergency. Your Code Ana Buddy needs to be a nearby adult who is NOT on the Code Ana Your Code Ana Coverage for Supervision of Uninvolved Students Time of Day Location Code Ana Buddy 10
Code Ana Medical Emergency Response Review You ve completed the bulk of the planning for your school s Code Ana Medical Emergency Response! Way to go! Let s now spend a few moments reviewing your plan and making sure you and your teammates are aware of how to RECOGNIZE TREAT ACTIVATE RESPOND CARE 11
