1 Course Resources for GSS EPID 785 Public Health Surveillance Summer 2013 Course Description EPID 785 Public Health Surveillance (1 credit hour) Eden V. Wells Public health surveillance is an integral ingredient of any efficient and effective disease control and prevention program. Public health professionals must have information concerning the parameters of a disease s occurrence in order to be able to develop and maintain a program to reduce the occurrence of that disease. This course will provide a strong background in all aspects of public health surveillance. Discussions will cover its history, purposes, and uses, and the elements involved in a public health surveillance program, surveillance data sources, data analysis, preparation of reports, program evaluation, and ethical and legal issues. Discussions will include surveillance of infectious and noninfectious diseases. Newer concepts of public health surveillance will also be discussed such as syndromic surveillance. Surveillance at local, state, and federal levels as well as practiced in other countries will also be discussed. Several case exercises will be worked on in the classroom. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of epidemiology and descriptive statistics. 2 PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE EPID 785 July 22-26, 2013 Course Purpose: To provide public health professionals with the theoretical and practical tools necessary to design, implement, use and evaluate effective surveillance programs to improve the public s health Target Audience: Public Health professionals from diverse settings who use surveillance systems, or who are planning to develop and implement such systems. Epidemiology Competencies Addressed: UMSPH Department of Epidemiology- 1. Identify and describe population patterns of health-related risk factors and health-related outcomes in terms of person, place and time. 2. Be familiar with the current major public health issues and be able to identify and evaluate the determinants of these public health issues (e.g. demographic, pathophysiological, genetic, environmental, infectious, behavioral, and social). 8. Be familiar with basic aspects of field methods in epidemiology (e.g. human subject protection, data collection and management, survey design, sampling strategies, calculating power, and public health surveillance). 9. Demonstrate effective communication of epidemiologic findings in written and oral formats. Goals 1. Describe the basic principles of public health surveillance, including how to establish public health surveillance program, how to collate and analyze data, and how to prepare and distribute a report 2. Describe the uses and limitations of public health surveillance problems and sources of complimentary data. 3. Develop a disease specific public health surveillance system. 4. Develop and conduct an evaluation of a public health surveillance system. 5. Describe how public health surveillance programs are applied to public health problems in developed and developing countries. 6. Describe different types of public health surveillance programs which apply to a variety of public health problems, whether infectious or non-infectious. Objectives 1. Identify the uses and state the objectives for conducting public health surveillance. 2. List data collection sources and methods of conducting public health surveillance.

3 3. Describe the relationship between public health surveillance and decision making. 4. Describe the methods of evaluating a public health surveillance program. 5. Compare and contrast public health surveillance programs at national, state, and local levels. 6. Compare and contrast similarities and differences in public health surveillance programs of infectious and non-infectious health problems. 7. Explain the role and limitations of surveys in contributing to the support of public health surveillance.
