1 Department of Nursing Nursing 220: Professional Clinical Nursing Practice Five Course Credits Spring: 12 Week 2012 Tuesday 2-4 (Classroom Learning) 24 total hours Wednesday 8:30-11:30 or 1-4 (Lab Learning) 36 total hours Monday or Friday: 6 hours (Clinical Learning) 72 total hours Instructor: Emily L. McClung MSN, RN Office Location: Teachout-Price: 217 Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 12-2 and by appointment Telephone: McclungEL@hiram.edu Course Description: This course will introduce the student to the clinical practice of nursing in a patient care setting. A major focus is the application of the nursing process, as well as the use of therapeutic communication and interpersonal relationship skills. Students will be introduced to beginning concepts of interventions for the medical and surgical patients, including the administration of medication. Prerequisite: Nursing 210, Math 210 (or currently enrolled in) Course Objectives: 1) Apply the interpersonal process to peer and patient relationships a. Categorize interpersonal process skills b. Integrate therapeutic communication skills with the patient and family c. Implement culturally sensitive communication when interacting with patients and families d. Analyze interpersonal communication 2) Implement the nursing process a. Conduct a systematic and holistic health assessment i. Obtain a complete health history ii. Demonstrate proficiency in conducting a physical assessment b. Identify appropriate nursing diagnosis (NANDA) for the patient and family c. Identify outcome (NOC) and interventions (NIC) together with the patient and family to promote health i. Incorporate EBP in the nursing process and practice d. Organize assessment findings and evaluation systematically i. Demonstrate writing proficiency using Gordon s Health Pattern and institutional documentation system ii. Compliances with ethical and legal implication for nursing documentation

2 3) Apply selected physiological principles in promoting health a. Implements appropriate interventions to maintain and promote individual and family health. b. Apply principles of basic medication administration 4) Exhibit professional nursing behavior a. Perform selected skill in caring for patients b. Provide for patient safety c. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability d. Demonstrate ethical and legal behaviors e. Identify principles of caring in all nursing actions Clinical Objectives 1) Applies the Interpersonal Process a. Therapeutically interacts with patient and families b. Therapeutically interacts with peers c. Therapeutically interacts with staff and faculty d. Analyze interpersonal communication (ICA) 2) Implements the Nursing Process a. Obtains a complete health history b. Demonstrates proficiency in conducting a head to toe assessment c. Identifies appropriate NANDA for patient and family d. Identifies appropriate NOC and NIC for patient and family e. Implements appropriate interventions to maintain and promote individual and family health f. Organizes assessment findings and evaluations systematically. (NCP) g. Complies with ethical and legal implications for nursing documentation 3) Applies Principles of Basic Medication Administration a. Verifies patient identity b. Administers all medication demonstrating the 6 rights of medication administration c. Accurately calculates correct medication dosage d. Verbalizes safe dosage, desired effects, interactions, adverse reactions, contraindications and nursing implications for drugs administered e. Administers oral and topical medication using principles of medical asepsis f. Correctly identifies sites for parenteral injections g. Administers parenteral medications using principles of surgical asepsis 4) Implements Selected Nursing Skills a. Uses medical and surgical aseptic techniques b. Provides for patient safety c. Provides for patient s comfort and hygiene d. Carries out selected skills as assigned e. Accurately translates written and verbal information for chart, kardex and report into specific nursing actions

3 5) Exhibits Professional Nursing Behavior a. Evaluates own ability and progresses with minimal help b. Accepts and uses correction constructively c. Uses sources of help which are appropriate to the situation d. Demonstrates adequate preparation for clinical e. Makes contributions in pre and post conference f. Attends clinical in a timely fashion g. Follows Hiram uniform code h. Demonstrates ethical and legal behavior i. Demonstrates professional behavior j. Demonstrates civil behavior is all learning environments and relationships. Course Expectations Attendance is strongly recommended for classroom learning. Attendance is mandatory for laboratory and clinical learning. o Make up will be required Completion of all reading and writing assignments prior to class. Accept personal responsibility for academic success.
