5 Life Support Programs The Division of Life Support Programs works to advance science and research in pediatric life and create and collaborate on innovative and life-saving products that support diverse audiences in the first line of response. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP ) NRP is an educational program jointly sponsored with the American Heart Association (AHA). The course has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn to hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery, including physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists. Since the inception of the NRP in 1987, over 3 million individuals in the United States and abroad have been trained and the program has been translated into over 30 languages. The 6th Edition is based on simulation methodology, enhancing development of critical leadership, communication and team work skills. To learn more about NRP, visit Pediatric Education Prehospital Professionals (PEPP ) PEPP, 3rd Edition is the most comprehensive source of information on emergency medical care for children available. Based on the most current medical information and best practices, PEPP, 3rd Edition covers the critical knowledge and skills needed to rapidly evaluate, stabilize, and transport the pediatric patient. PEPP offers students an engaging course that expands their knowledge of pediatric core concepts and promotes critical thinking through case-based learning, hands-on skill stations, live-action video, small group scenarios, and precourse online modules. To learn more about PEPP, visit Helping Babies Breathe (HBB ) HBB is a hands-on neonatal resuscitation program for resource-limited environments. It focuses on simple techniques like keeping the baby warm, rubbing the baby dry, and if necessary, suctioning the baby s mouth and correctly applying a resuscitator for bag-mask ventilation. The students will be using the educational materials and a newborn simulator, for scenario based simulations to practice essential skills of caring for healthy babies and assisting babies who do not breathe on their own. To learn more about HBB, visit APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource APLS is a continuing medical education program developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). APLS features an innovative modular curriculum designed to present the information physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals need to assess and care for critically ill and injured children during the first few hours in the emergency department or office-based setting. To learn more about APLS, visit Pediatric First Aid for Caregivers and Teachers (PedFACTs ) The PedFACTs course prepares caregivers and teachers to appropriately recognize and respond to the ill or injured child. The participant manual is the core of the PedFACTs course with features that reinforce and expand on the essential information. Each emergency topic is divided into three sections: What You Should Know: Provides background information. What You Should Look For: Provides assessment information. What You Should Do: Provides first aid treatment information. To learn more about PedFACTs, visit Infant CPR Anytime First Aid for Families: A Parent s Guide to Safe and Healthy Kids This guide provides immediate access to vital first aid information on a range of common childhood illnesses and emergencies. This essential home resource gives parents the confidence they need to provide timely and appropriate care. A self-directed learning program trains lay persons the principles of CPR in less than 30 minutes. The kit includes a personal inflatable infant CPR-practice manikin. aap.org/education 5

11 Workforce and Medical Education Policy The Division of Workforce and Medical Education Policy guides the Academy in the advocacy and development of public policy related to the health care workforce and the education of physicians. Issues under the Division s purview include the funding of medical education, physician workforce regulation, scope of practice, diversity, retirement patterns, and physician reentry into practice. The Physician Reentry into the Workforce Project For practical tools, information, and planning resources, visit Physician reentry into clinical practice can be defined as returning to professional activity/clinical practice for which one has been trained, certified, or licensed after an extended period of time. The process of physician reentry involves more than the individual physician. State medical and osteopathic boards have a vested interest in the continued competency of the licensees they regulate as part of their ongoing obligation to protect the public. Likewise, patients and the public, better informed than ever, now demand more of their physicians. And employers are keen to demonstrate that their physicians are providing safe and efficacious care. As a result, maintaining and demonstrating clinical competencies are all components of the reentry process. It is therefore important for those who have left practice, or who are planning to do so, to engage in strategic career planning. The Physician Reentry into the Workforce Project encourages physicians to employ strategies that will enable them to maintain their practice skills and to engage in the practice of lifelong learning. Employment Resource Conventional wisdom says that if you do what you love, you ll never work a day in your life. If you re looking for a job in child and adolescent health care, look no further than PedJobs SM. It s the only career resource dedicated exclusively to pediatrics and its subspecialties.
