One Nurse s Personal Journey OBJECTIVES: 1. Discuss Anatomy and Physiology of the lymphatic system. 2. Discuss the factors and disease processes that interrupt the lymphatic system. 3. Discuss the nursing considerations of patients with lymphedema 4. Discuss the four components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT 1.0 CE pending approval This activity has been submitted to the Association of perioperative Registered Nurses, Inc. for approval to award contact hours. The Association of perioperative Registered Nurses, Inc. is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Activities that are approved by AORN are recognized as continuing education for registered nurses. This recognition does not imply that AORN or the ANCC Commission on Accreditation approves or endorses any product included in the presentation. President s Message Secretary Report Treasurer s Report President s Message I am very excited to undertake this new role as president of Mass Chapter 1. I had been involved with AORN as a staff nurse for a number of years before becoming active in my local chapter. The main reason that I became more active and started to undertake run for different offices such as; Board of Directors and Vice President, was because I became a perioperative educator about 5 years ago. I felt that I need to fully understand our evidence-based practice and live the AORN Standards and Recommended Practices and Guidelines. I needed to walk the walk. Our national president, Martha Stratton, has chosen this year s theme as The Power of You to emphasize the potential each perioperative nurse has to advance his or her practice, our profession, and our organization. Mass Chapter 1 has an outstanding year ahead with our national Expo being in Boston in Last time that that Expo was in Boston was, I believe, 1967! Long before most of us were nurses and before some of us were even alive. This is going to be a year truly of the Power of You will a great deal of networking between the New England AORN chapters and developing a large group of volunteers to host our fellow AORN members from around the country and the world. Thank you all very much for attending tonight. It has been great to see everyone. And I look forward to seeing you in the coming year. Jennifer Bragdon DNP,RN,MTS,CNOR,CPN,President Elena Canacari Receives 2017 President s Award President Charlotte Guglielmi invited the Board to select the recipient of the President s Award. As the Board considered the qualities and attributes that the recipient needed to reflect such as an expert perioperative nurse, change agent, passion for patient safety. Also a leader, committed to the mission and values of AORN one person came to the mind of many of them. Several members of the board offered stories that described her leadership, passion, calming presence and support. She is an expert practitioner and nurse executive who continually remains active in our chapter and is frequently seen at our educational offerings and meetings. She was a pioneer in promoting a culture of safety and an early graduate of the National Patient Safety Fellowship constantly remaining focused on preventing injuries to patients and staff recognizing that the solutions in our care delivery models lie in the wisdom of those who deliver care. Her support of AORN and the active participation of the BIDMC staff in the association at all levels is endless. The Board of Directors congratulates Elena Canacari RN, CNOR.

2 It is my pleasure to report to you that our chapter is definitely 65 and still thriving. For the second year in a row, AORN Massachusetts Chapter 1 has easily completed all of AORN s annual chapter accountability requirements. Our chapter documents continue to be housed in a secure chapter Board site on OR Nurse Link. Your board is meeting its fiscal responsibility through a proactive budgeting process. President s Annual Report We have completed the down-sizing of the Nominating Committee making it more in line with the work that they need to do. Our work to ensure an informed and sustainable succession plan for our board has been successful. The vacant VP slot on the ballot. For the first time it wasn t because we could not find a candidate it was because we had a candidate that needed to vacate a position on the board to assume the office. Donna Amado had long planned to fill the office of VP. She has been appointed according to the by-laws and I will be completing her term as secretary. Your board is young and excited. I am confident that we have leadership in place that will sustain us for years to come. Kim Wheeler and Rod McArdle are attending the 2016 AORN Leadership Academy at AORN Headquarters in Denver, with this, 6 of our 8 board members have attended and have the tools they need to lead us. We sat 14 delegates at the 2016 AORN Expo. Our number was less than our allotted 23 but all engaged with enthusiasm in the important work of the association. We continue our responsible stewardship to the AORN Foun- dation as a sustaining monthly donor. In my role as Foundation President I challenge each of you join me by going on-line and donating 5 for 25. We are hoping every member will get on board. Imagine what we can do if this happens. Our membership numbers remain stable. We will continue to seek avenues to attract new members to our chapter. We have sustained our efforts to enhance communication. Beginning last Sept we adjusted our meeting model. We now hold two face-to -face meetings a year once in the fall and the annual meeting in May using on-line webinars for the others. This new way of doing business has enabled us to bring nationally known speakers to you several times a year rather than now and then. We continue to reach out to the small chapters in the New England region to invite them to join us. For many this is the only way that they are ever able to network and enjoy learning from the experts. We provided testimony at the state house on three occasions supporting certification of CPD staff, promoting the role of the RNFA and on nursing s agenda for a healthier workplace. Three awards are being presented this year and on July 1 st we will begin the application process for our reinitiated scholarship program. It has been a long time since we have been able to do this. 3 2016 AORN Massachusetts Chapter 1 Promising Professional Award Jennifer Frederico BSN, RN, CNOR This Award requires a colleague nomination; the nominee must be an AORN member and new to perioperative nursing in the past five years. The applicant must excel in adaptation/orientation to the perioperative environment as demonstrated by skills in communication, clinical judgment, leadership, education and clinical expertise. The following is a quote from her nominator. Jennifer is a CNOR at Boston Children's Hospital and has been in her current position since She is involved in many professional groups such as the Hand Hygiene Committee, The Skin Subject Matter Expert Group and she is the Co-Chair of the Boston Children's Hospital Education Committee. Jen is not only a member of AORN but she is the Emerging Leader Board Member of the AORN Foundation Board of Trustees. She has attended Expo for the past two years, presenting posters at both. In 2015 she presented "Path to Perioperative Nursing as Experienced by Twelve New Graduate Nurses". In 2016 she participated in the Young Professionals Panel, where she discussed the expectations and values of AORN membership as an early career Perioperative RN. Her excellent practice at Boston Children's Hospital and her dedication to improving her practice makes her the perfect candidate for this award. Save the Date - November 19th AORN MA Chapter 1 Preceptor Workshop 2016 AORN Massachusetts Chapter 1 Preceptor s Award Susan Sargent MSN RN CNOR This award requires a colleague nomination and is given to a perioperative nurse who demonstrates advanced skills in the role of preceptor such as communication, clinical judgement, leadership, education and clinical expertise. The following is an excerpt from her nomination statement. She is a mentor, a role model, and a daily example of nursing excellence in the preoperative setting. She is a lifelong learner and has achieved many accomplishments throughout her career She is a profound patient advocate and educator to surgical patients Susan is a strong advocate of evidence based best practice, and attends many AORN and facility education in-services in order to stay current in her practice Susan leads by example when referring to professional development and lifelong learning Approximately six months ago I approached Susan Sargent to asked if she would be interested in being my nursing preceptor. I had recently graduated nursing school, and had begun the transition from surgical technologist to preoperative nurse. Susan has been unbelievably welcoming and supportive of my new role as a perioperative nurse. She has gone above and beyond her duty as a clinical preceptor. Susan has not only taught me all that I know about nursing in the operating room and the circulating role, but she has helped me to create a foundation for my future in nursing.

4 Secretary Report Annual Meeting, May 2016 Treasurer s Report The meeting was called to order by President Guglielmi who welcomed the members and guests to the Annual Meeting. She then reminded those present of the purposes of the meeting which are; to celebrate the work of the last year, to install those who will lead us in the coming year, to honor those who deserve a special tribute, to learn, to network and to have fun. It was determined a quorum was present. The President s Annual Report to the Membership and the list of members who have served on chapter committees were distributed. Questions should be addressed to the board of Directors. Special recognition made to Barbara DiTullio who once again, planned the evening s event. President Guglielmi then recognized the following individuals. The Board of Directors and Nominating Committee Claire Plourde, a Charter Member of the chapter. Members of the AORN Golden Gavel, Claire Plourde (Board of Directors and as AORN Vice President), Trish Seifert (Past President) Jennifer Federico, AORN Foundation Board of Trustees first ever Emerging Leader Trustee. Chapter members serving on AORN national Committees Past presidents of the chapter, Carol Kubiak, Deb Savage, Theresa Jasset, Gaby Cohen, Angi Walsh, Brenda McKonly, Nancy Fennessey, Claire Plourde. Members who have retired from active practice this year Maureen Houstle, Carol Kubiak. The 2016 chapter awards were presented. Each recipient also received a one year AORN membership AORN Massachusetts Chapter 1 Preceptor s Award: Susan Sargent 2016 AORN Massachusetts Chapter 1 Promising Professional Award: 2016 President s Award: Elena Canacari. The Officers and Board of Directors as well as the Nominating Committee were installed by Donna Amado. Jennifer Bradon in her first activity as President gave her Acceptance Remarks. She then introduced the keynote speaker for the evening Patricia "Trish" C. Seifert, MSN, RN, CNOR, FAAN. The meeting was adjourned following her presentation.
