2 BUSINESS ARISING FROM SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 MINUTES Canadian Injury Falls Curriculum for the NE October health unit staff plus myself and W. Carew attended the facilitator training course for this curriculum. Our goal is to teach the CFPC to any interested person(s) who works or who wants to prevent falls among seniors in the NE LHIN. Through the workshop the participants develop a work plan on a topic of interest to them and their community. We anticipate that we will set up the five sessions through the OTN and offer it in 2 hr blocks as opposed to 2 full days. Only requirements will be that registration must be completed through OIPRC with payment of $ and that you must attend all five sessions. NE SOYF REGIONAL COMMITTEE Terms of Reference have been approved and the committee has now established three workgroups: Physical Activity Communication and Evaluation Committee. Very interested in having the Implementation Science investigated especially for the local coalitions and recently a webinar was held. Next meeting will be held January 9, 2015 Adult Concussions & MVC Nipissing University 3 rd BScN completed their concussion project around adults driving following a suspected concussion but with no law that would allow a police officer the authority to demand the driver seek medical attention if they suspect a concussion. I received a from our Regional ABI Resource Clinician who has voiced her concerns that police officers do not have the authority to tell a driver they cannot drive their car?? in speaking with some officers if the driver is impaired and is displaying cognitive issues then yes! 3 P.A.R.T.Y Program Update teleconference November 18 (Temiskaming-Timmins-Sudbury-North Bay- Thunder Bay) representatives discussed the issues around the P.A.R.T.Y. program. Pat reported that all the NE were started and assisted with funding of $5,000 and were advised that efforts to raise funds would have to continue. Lorna reported that they have a sponsor in their area as does Sudbury. Funding is an issue for North Bay but the host for the P.A.R.T.Y program in Timmins appears to be the issue since the Fire Chief retired. Thunder Bay does not have hospital staff to run the program. North Bay: Ministry of Transportation is working with the staff of the North Bay Regional Hospital Timmins will work with the Hospital in the new year to get the program up and running and will investigate assigning HU staff NW (Randi) reported that Fort Francis is most successful Paramedics offer the program twice a year. Atikokan will be offering their first program. Pat will ask Raija for an update from Sault Ste Marie. NEW BUSINESS MAKING ONTARIO S ROADS SAFER ACT Combined Bill 173 and Bill 34 - Under Senior Drivers it will allow them to keep their license for identification purposes - New Impaired Driving: for alcohol it is the introduction of remedial measures collection of defaulted fines - School buses only chrome yellow - Flashings red lights for bikes - Move over Law will include tow truck drivers OIPPN MVC BRIEF with PHO PHO in October sent out the release of Evidence Brief: Predictors and risk factors of texting and driving among youth According to current collision trends, fatalities from the impacts of distracted driving are forecasted to exceed those from drinking and driving by Texting and driving increases collision or near-collision event risk by 23 times compared to those driving without any distraction. At this time we are looking for a replacement from the Northeast. Chris Daigneault-Hache will advise by the new year if she will be available to represent NIPPN on both provincial committees Partnership: OTCN & OIPRC Meeting with the Chair of the Ontario Trauma Coordinators Network and Stephanie and myself from OIPRC to discuss a planning call or partnerships between the two networks. Trauma Hospitals are able to provide data ( identify what they see in their emergency departments) OIPRC can plan injury prevention priorities around the data etc. Discussion around the importance of having the Trauma staff on the Regional Networks and that statistics should be shared at each meeting. 5 OIPRC Working with the NE LHIN to promote the Canadian Injury Falls Curriculum by the PHU staff Working on the Injury Prevention curriculum modules Planning a work shop with the Alliance IP Health Unit Managers and Chairs of the Regional Networks in February. Establishing a work group with the Trauma Hospital Coordinators and OIPRC staff Trauma Hospitals Sudbury: Theresa reported that trauma volumes are down in the Northeast. Pat expressed the importance of having the Regional Trauma Hospitals participating on the Network committee and how much they appreciated their input. It is hoped that statistics for the area could be shared for the next meeting. Thunder Bay Tom reported that Safe Communities is holding meetings with the Hospital expressing the importance of the position of the Trauma Manager to community as well as the various programs. North Bay Fentanyl Procedure: Private Members Bill passed first reading in Legislation October. Procedure has been shared to various health units, independent pharmacy outlets, methadone clinics, Physician clinics in the province. Nipissing SOYF: is looking at restricting their committee into various working groups in the new year to align with the Regional committee Health Unit leading a Medication clean out and will be participating in the provincial Medication clean out. Mock Crash & Buckle Up has been scheduled for Feb. 23 at Memorial Gardens with 12 secondary schools (Grade 11-12) students for a total of Page5

6 Public Health Units Sudbury District Health Unit (Written Report from Tina) Falls Prevention Stand Up! Facilitator training on January 8 th, We are getting ready for our January programs and continue to work with non-for-profit organizations to implement the Stand Up Program in Sudbury Manitoulin and Districts. Road Safety CPSAC training date are being planned for winter and spring. Road Safety priorities for 2015 are distracted and vulnerable road users. We are also continuing to work on a car seat community strategy. We have held engagement meetings with partners and are finishing up a literature search. Thunder Bay District Health Unit (Written Report from Marita Campbell) Substance Use: Completed community consultations on alcohol and are doing analysis now. This will inform a long term strategy to reduce alcohol-related harms. Held one community forum and 5 drop-in events (3 in Thunder Bay and 2 in Geraldton) where we set up an alcohol display in public places (like malls, grocery store, sports centre) and invited citizens to share their thoughts on alcohol. Working with the school board mental leads in our area on a literature review on evidence-based substance misuse prevention in schools. Working on an alcohol campaign targeting yr olds to reduce binge drinking to be launched in 2015 the centerpiece of the campaign will be an animated video, currently testing some preliminary creative. Created a holiday themed ad Keeping safe at home and on the road adapted from content from Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. Ran in our local entertainment magazine (Walleye) and through social media and posters. Page6

7 ON/OFF ROAD SAFETY Community Traffic Awareness Committee (CTAC) launched the new video Last Words that visualizes the ripple effect that can happen if you choose to text and drive and get into a collision. The 60 sec. video will be playing in all adult movie theaters throughout the month of December. To see the movie go to TBDHU.com Snowmobile ATV Vessel Education Committee (SAVE) placed ATV Safety and Snowmobile Safety ads in all the district newspapers and the Chronicle Journal as well as scripted radio ads that played on CFNO (district radio station) and CKPR. The ATV ads ran for the month of late October/Nov. and the Snowmobile ads are running throughout December. Timiskaming Health Unit Winter Driving Campaign is under way billboards are up, radio and print ads are occurring January 22 & 23, 2015 a Car Seat training will be held by the St John s Ambulance Hosting their 1 st Stay On Your Feet Coalition meeting for Timiskaming Held pilot food clinics for Falls Risk Assessment 426 clients at 8 clinics. Welcome to Lynn Julien -Public Health Promoter who has taken over the Road Safety portfolio from Lorna. Porcupine Health Unit Alcohol: Municipal Alcohol Policy and Safer Bars Workshop provided in September. Various Pour Challenges focusing on standard drink sizes was delivered in various communities in the district. Stand Up: Two Stand Up training sessions took place in Timmins in Various communities in the district are implementing the program. Timmins has been having difficulties recruiting members for the SOYF coalition but Page7

8 OTHER movement is now happening. Concussion: Partnership with Northern College Nursing Students to deliver Brain Day in elementary schools in November. Will be expanded to all French and English elementary schools in the district in the new year. Bullying: Partnership with elementary schools to encourage bullying activities in the month of November. Schools that chose to participated will be followed up with in February for more incentives and activities. RNAO Youth Mental Health and Addictions Project: 1 of 6 participating health units in the province. 3 schools have been recruited (Timmins 2 and Iroquois Falls-1) Youth leads as well as youth champions have been recruited and trained. They are currently planning activities to promote mental within their school and / or community. Northwestern Health Unit (Randi in Dryden) - Aging well campaign with new displays and resources includes media around winter safety for seniors and a wishlist for healthy Christmas gifts for seniors - Car Seat technician training in the New year. Beginning with Red Lake, then Kenora and Dryden to follow - Nurses supporting OPP this holiday season with Operation Crayola Crackdown and the RIDE program ( opportunity to promote LRDG) Question Is anyone looking at synthetic drugs in their community?
