What is this course about? 1.1 Course description You will undertake 120 hours (3 weeks) of supervised nursing practice. You will work in an acute or community setting as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide evidence based care with a particular emphasis on caring for patients and clients with acute or ongoing, complex, health issues. You will critically self-appraise your practice and your facilitator will evaluate your work using the accepted nursing standards for practice at a level consistent with a developing nursing student. 1.2 Course content Work integrated learning in acute and community healthcare settings Registered Nurse standards for Practice Practice embedding the Code of Ethics and Professional Code of Conduct for Nurses 2. 3 Assessment Task 1: Progressive assessment of practice Goal: Product: Format: Page 3 This task provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your practice during the initial period of the placement, review your progress against the criteria in the tool for assessing standards for practice, and develop an action plan to support your successful completion of this work integrated learning experience Completed assessment tool and action plan Completion with clinical facilitator of Formative Clinical Assessment tool, action plan which is then submitted to the course coordinator for any further consideration and comment Please note: You will receive ongoing feedback as a formative and developmental process. A midway assessment will be completed. In addition, if you are not meeting satisfactory practice standards at any point learning processes will be used to support you to attain the necessary behaviours to satisfactorily meet each standard. Unsatisfactory behaviours which put patient/client safety at risk or which do not adhere with the NMBA Registered Nurse standards for practice, Code of Professional Conduct and/or Code of Ethics criteria and standards may result in your removal from placement. If you do not meet each standard at a satisfactory standard you will fail the item. Please refer to the clinical handbook for details. Criteria Practice behaviours as measured against Practice Standards for registered nurse and as detailed in the assessment tool Evidence of adherence to Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics criteria and standards Specific goals and plan for practice inclusive of all Practice Standards Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Communication Collaboration Assessment Task 2: Summative assessment of practice Goal: The purpose of this summative assessment is for you to demonstrate completion of allocated placement for this course and satisfactory competency based on the NMBA Registered Nurse standards for practice at a developing level and as measured in the Clinical Assessment Tool Product: Completed nursing practice hours and Summative Clinical Assessment Tool Format: The clinical facilitator will finalise the clinical assessment tool including assessment of your competency in all standards and completion of the required hours. The facilitator will discuss the deliberations with you and you will have the opportunity to provide comment on the tool. This will be submitted to the course coordinator for final judgement. Ultimate accountability for assessing students in relation to clinical practice (WIL) resides with the course coordinator and grades are finalized through the USC assessment policy and procedures. 4 Page Additional assessment requirements This course will be graded as Pass in a Limited Grade Course (PU) or Fail in a Limited Grade Course (UF) as per clause and of the Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA) - Institutional Operating Policy of the University of the Sunshine Coast. In a course using Limited Grades, all assessment tasks relating to a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activity or a professional competency (PC) task are required to be passed for a student to successfully complete the course. Supplementary assessment is not available in courses using Limited Grades. 5.4 Submission penalties You must contact your Course Coordinator if you require an extension or alternate assessment. 6. These materials/readings will assist you in preparing for tutorials and assignments, and will provide further information regarding particular aspects of your course. 7.3 Specific requirements Please familiarise yourself with the Clinical Handbook. It contains all the information and procedures which guide the conduct of your work integrated learning experience in this course. Please note your Summative Clinical Assessment Tool will not be finalised until you have completed the allocated hours for this course. If you are unable to attend any hours you will be required to make these up. Your grade for the course will not be finalised until all requirements are satisfactorily completed.

5 Page 5 You are required to wear the USC nursing/midwifery student uniform to clinical placement. You may need to travel to placement and you will need to cover these costs. 7.4 Risk management This course involves placement in a health facility and as such there will be risks that are expected to occur in the practice of nursing in health facility It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the Health and Safety policies and procedures applicable to minimise and negate risks.
