3 THE ROLE You will provide anaesthetic cover for Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery and Interventional Neuroradiology/MRI. Anaesthetic cover is also provided for the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Centre, which provides ventilation services for patients with spinal cord injuries from the whole of Scotland. The post will be full time and permanent and will be based at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Southern General Hospital, Glasgow. Out of hours work involves participation in a maximum 1:6 non-resident on call rota with prospective cover for annual and study leave. You will be expected to follow the job plan and manage your own work programme within Board policy and procedures. A sample job plan is included in the job description. THE REQUIREMENTS: Please view the detailed person specification on pages 6 and 7 You should be appropriately experienced and qualified in the specialty, fully registered with the GMC and have a licence to practice. Those trained in the UK should be either on the specialist register/ have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT/eligibility for specialist registration (CESR)/be within 6 months of confirmed entry to specialist register from date of Interview. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. You should have a clear interest in Head and Neck Anaesthesia. 4 INDICATIVE JOB PLAN cont: Note that the actual job plan may differ A split of 9:1 between direct clinical care PAs and supporting professional activities is now standard for all new consultant job plans in Scotland. As outlined in the indicative job plan above, the 1 SPA minimum will reflect activity such as appraisal, personal audit and professional development occurring outside study leave time. Once appointed, more SPA time may be agreed for activities such as undergraduate and postgraduate medical training which takes place outside direct clinical care, as well as research and/or management. These activities must be specifically and clearly identified and be agreed with the candidate and desired by the department. The allocation for On Call is 1.5 PA The minimum allocation for preoperative and postoperative visits is 0.5 PA (flexible) The job plan may require provision of late finish cover for OMFS oncology reconstruction cases. CLINICAL COMMITMENTS You will join an established team of 18 other Consultant Anaesthetists and 1 Specialty Doctor in the Department providing anaesthetic services within Neurosciences, OMFS and Spinal Injuries services. This includes the pre-operative assessment and peri- and post-operative care of patients undergoing Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial surgery, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiological procedures and care of patients in the NeuroIntensive and High Dependency Units. In addition, members of the Department are responsible for anaesthetic aspects of the care of patients ventilated in the Queen Elizabeth Spinal Injuries Centre. The on-call cover is for all patients within the Institute of Neurological Sciences including the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit. There may be a requirement to provide resident on call cover. ADMINISTRATION The Lead Clinician is the medical manager responsible for the medical staff within the Department and works with the General and Clinical Services Managers to ensure quality service delivery and development, clinical governance, appraisal and job planning. Members of the Department are involved in a number of committees both within and outside the local hospital. There are regular department meetings with the posts of chairman and secretary rotating around members. Currently, Dr Paul Edgar organises the weekly and on-call rotas. You willl be expected to participate and share in these administrative duties. You will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, and for the proper functioning of the Department and will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the clinical department. In addition to the duties mentioned above, duties at other hospitals administered by the employing authority may be necessary. 3

5 THE SERVICE Based at the Southern General Hospital campus in the south-west of Glasgow The Institute of Neurological Sciences provides, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuroradiological facilities for the West of Scotland. The Institute is equipped with a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Suite, SPECT Scanner, two Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners, and angiography facilities. The Institute has ICU, HDU and outpatient facilities and also houses ENT and Oral & Maxillofacial Services. The new South Glasgow Hospital campus will open in 2015Click here for more information Spinal Injuries Unit The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit for Scotland provides a spinal injuries service to the whole of Scotland. This is housed in a purpose-built facility. University Links The Southern General Hospital has built a sound academic and research base over the years with several members of the department closely involved with the University of Glasgow's Faculty of Medicine in teaching, examining and research. The hospital has an excellent teaching reputation and current provision includes libraries and lecture suites with comprehensive audio/visual facilities on site. A new state of the art purpose learning and Education Centre will open in 2015 as part of the 800m South Glasgow Hospital Campus development. THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Neuroanaesthesia provides all the anaesthetic services within the Neurosciences Directorate. There are 3-4 neurosurgical s, 2-3 maxillofacial surgical s, an interventional neuroradiology suite, 2 MRI scanners, 2 CT scanners, currently a 6 bedded Neuro-intensive care unit and a 6 bedded high dependency unit, which provide neurosurgical and maxillo facial services for the population of West of Scotland. Paediatric neurosurgery is performed at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, which is to be on the Southern General Hospital site in Anaesthetic cover is also provided for the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Centre, which provides services for patients with spinal cord injuries from the whole of Scotland. Ventilated patients are cared for in the Centre s High Dependency Ward and nearby Respiratory Care Unit. LEAD CLINICIAN Dr Urmila Ratnasabapathy- Appointed as lead clinician in 2012, Dr Ratnasabapathy joined the Neuroanaesthetic Consultant Department in At that time, there were 8 Consultant members of the department. As clinical lead, she has been instrumental in the introduction of an Acute Pain Service in the Institute of Neurological Sciences. As the Consultant department continues to expand under her lead, Dr Ratnasabapathy has been central to the development of both the non-training Clinical Fellow post and the Specialty Doctor post to assist with cover of the resident trainee first on call rota. Keen on undergraduate teaching, Dr Ratnasabapathy is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Glasgow School of Medicine. Her special interests are Resuscitation and Anaesthesia for Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery. 4

7 PERSON SPECIFICATION CATEGORY ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS Application must present evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) OR of being within 6 months of confirmed entry from indicated date of Interview. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING EXPERIENCE Clinical Application must present evidence of Full registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise. Application must present evidence of a higher qualification e.g. FRCA or equivalent. Application must present evidence of previous appointments which provided professional training in Anaesthesia posts as approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent Application must have evidence of experience in Neuro-anaesthesia and Anaesthesia for Maxillofacial surgery as Specialist Registrar or post-cct MD / PhD Attendance at appropriate professional courses. Managerial Attendance at an appropriate management course. Application must evidence a working knowledge of NHS management responsibilities of Consultants Audit Application must evidence of participation in audit activities Experience of clinical audit. Supervision Application must evidence experience of supervising junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines 6

9 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council. TYPE OF CONTRACT GRADE AND SALARY HOURS OF DUTY SUPERANNUATION REMOVAL EXPENSES EXPENSES OF CANDIDATES FOR APPOINTMENT TOBACCO POLICY DISCLOSURE SCOTLAND CONFIRMATION OF ELIGIBILITY TO WORK IN THE UK Permanent Consultant, 75, ,451 per annum (pro rata) New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer. Full time, 40 Hours per week New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via: Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment. Candidates who are requested to attend an interview will be given assistance with appropriate travelling expenses. Reimbursement shall not normally be made to employees who withdraw their application or refuse an offer of appointment.
