3 Outline Description: Unsung Heroes objective was to unite archive material and contemporary artworks to celebrate nursing history in living memory. Ruth Honeybone, Archivist: Lothian Health Service Archive This project is part historical, part medical and part artistic, with a strong focus on the Lothian Health Service Archive enamelled badge collection which dates from the early twentieth century right up to the 1990 s. This two year collaborative project involved the following: Lothian Health Service Archive Edinburgh College of Art Gingko Projects for the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Exhibition consultants: Amanda Game, Elizabeth Goring of Innovative Craft Elizabeth Turrell specialist enamel consultant Funded by: Heritage Lottery NHS Lothian & RIE Volunteers. 5 Con t As a staff contributor for Unsung Heroes my objectives were: Researching historical photographic documentation held by Lothian Health Service Archive and the SCRAN web site Finding and selecting visual source material that summed up my own interpretation of the Unsung Hero Designing and making of two contemporary badges with reference to the selected photograph of Volunteer Nurses from the Spanish Civil War 1930 Volunteer Nurses; Spanish Civil War 1030 s photographer: unknown (primary source material) Making a statement about an event in 20 th Century history that receives little attention and reflection Test plates: Vitreous enamel with sgraffito technique Susan Cross

Nurses invited to bring their badges and talk about their careers in the Nursing profession to students and staff from the Jewellery & Silversmithing department at Edinburgh College of Art. Interviews were recorded for research purposes. September 2011 public exhibition of research, design & technical process presented at Centre for Research Collections, Edinburgh University. Exhibition at the Centre for Research Collections, Edinburgh March Permanent installation of selected project outcomes opens outside the Outpatient Department 3,Royal Infirmary Edinburgh.

March I thought it'd please you to know that Unsung Heroes is attracting a lot of interest! I see people come out the door of OPD3, hesitate, catch sight of the display cases and wander over out of curiosity. The most unlikely people spend time looking carefully (I'm remembering the pale-faced young man covered in piercings). There was a group of women in their sixties the other day discussing their recollections of hospitals now closed. So I think you can consider the exhibition something of a success!
