AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY TO YOUNG PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. UrbanPlan UK YEAR INITIAL ROLLOUT PLAN STATE SCHOOLS TARGETED ANNUALLY PUPILS A YEAR 1 UrbanPlan UK
UrbanPlan UK Inspiring real estate s future Following a successful pilot, the Urban Land Institute is bringing its UrbanPlan programme to the UK in UrbanPlan is the ULI s exciting educational initiative that s been running successfully in high schools in the US for over ten years - reaching over 27,000 students and enabling more than 1,500 ULI members to share their experiences. Originally funded by the George Lucas Educational Foundation and other leading US industry bodies, it brings to life the urban environment for young people through a series of interactive real life workshops and team working challenges. Why UrbanPlan UK? UrbanPlan UK is more than just an educational programme to help young people understand the role real estate plays to revive and regenerate urban areas. It s also a great mechanism for: Creating more informed citizens who better understand the communities in which they live. Enriching the A level curriculum. Developing links between schools and industry. Engaging with and raising the aspirations of young people. Very topically, ensuring the long term success of the real estate industry by addressing an industry challenge to reach students from a diverse social and economic demographic who might not have thought about a real estate career. Making UrbanPlan UK Happen ULI plans to deliver this innovative programme in schools across the country, initially over three years, and completely free of charge. By the third year, the target is to have it running annually in a minimum of 40 state schools reaching 1,200 pupils a year. Significant investment in the development of this programme has already been made thanks to grants from the ULI Foundation in the US, the ULI Charitable Trust in Europe and IPF Educational Trust in the UK. However to maximise impact and reach, ULI is now seeking financial and in-kind support from the property industry. This is an opportunity for your organisation to be at the forefront of the delivery of this programme and to give back by playing a part in what is an industry wide movement to promote a better understanding of the real estate industry to young people from all walks of life. UrbanPlan UK 2
The UrbanPlan UK Model UrbanPlan UK delivers targeted one-day workshops for year 12 A level students (Geography & Business Studies) to bring real estate to life in a way designed to be relevant to the syllabus and compelling for young people. ULI has adapted its US model for UK state secondary schools in partnership with EdComs, a market leading award winning British educational consultancy ( It follows a detailed feasibility study and pilot run in three very diverse London schools in November Ninety A level students participated in the pilot from business studies and geography disciplines. The workshops were very well received by students, teachers and volunteers alike and were, in particular, considered highly successful in the delivery of the core objective to raise awareness of the property industry amongst young people. URBAN REGENERATION WAS SOMETHING I HAD NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT BEFORE, I FOUND IT VERY INTERESTING PUPIL ULI and EdComs have designed the programme to be delivered free of charge; to fit readily within the curriculum and class timetables; and to minimise the impact on teachers workload. Easy-to-use multimedia resources are being created which include a teachers toolkit, templates & 3D models for pupils to work with as well as briefing films and software packages. 3 UrbanPlan UK

The UrbanPlan UK Workshop Scenario The workshop focuses on the redevelopment of a blighted site in a hypothetical town and students are grouped into teams to form property companies responding to a call for proposals from a fictional local council. Each team member assumes a role and through these roles students develop an understanding of the various market and non-market forces and stakeholders in the development process. They must reconcile the often-competing agendas to create a well-designed, market-responsive, and sustainable project. Teams address challenging financial, market, social, political, and design issues; develop a 3D model of their ONE WEEK BEFORE VISIT Pre-visit Materials Pre-visit Lesson Workshop Day Intro Films and Role Briefing VISIT Students Plan Presentations Students Develop Site Homework Rehearse Presentations Presentations UrbanPlan UK Process ONE WEEK AFTER VISIT plan; and present their proposal to the Council (made up of the industry volunteers) that awards the development contract to the winning team. UrbanPlan UK Delivery Each one-day workshop is led by a professional Facilitator (a qualified teacher). The Facilitator is supported during the project by the industry volunteers whose role is to challenge the students to think more critically about the UrbanPlan UK issues and the specific responsibilities of their role as well as engage in interactive discussions with students on their own project work or specific professional challenges. The volunteers help students relate these issues and decisions to challenges the students are set by UrbanPlan UK. Volunteers also fulfil the role of the Council representatives and hear student presentations, challenge their proposals, as in reality, and award the development contract to the winning development team. Adding Value ULI are also planning: An annual celebration event for winning teams. Opportunities to engage through follow-up activities (eg site visits, work experience) to support learning. Clear signposting on career choices (apprenticeships, internships, summer schools, work experience, university and other courses) in association with professional bodies & other key initiatives such as Property Needs You and Pathways to Property. ULI plans to work up a directory of next steps introducing students to all these initiatives. Mechanisms to measure outcomes so successes can be monitored and ongoing improvements made. To seek appropriate accreditation after the first year. UrbanPlan UK 6
HOW YOUR ORGANISATION CAN HELPe UrbanPlan UK Roll-Out Plan With the support of the IPF Educational Trust, ULI has already made a significant investment into the feasibility study, pilot and development and adaptation of the programme materials, website and resources. The aim is to have everything in place to deliver the first workshops in schools in the academic year as follows: Year 1 (Academic year ): Refinement phase - testing and further development - aim to deliver in 15 schools. Years 2 and 3 (Academic year ): Full roll out - deliver in 40 schools each year. Years 4+: Deliver in 40 schools a year plus potential for wider reach working with carefully selected partners, subject to ongoing funding. The aim is to target schools across the country but with an initial focus on cities where ULI has existing relationships: Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester. ULI will be working with EdComs to identify appropriate state schools in these locations who are keen to run the workshops for their year 12 pupils. ULI is aiming to fund the annual delivery of the workshop programme via a consortium of industry supporters. Year 1: The Founders ULI is seeking funding from 10 Founders who will be at the forefront of this exciting initiative and will be invited to commit an initial 10k each for the first year of the roll out of the programme. This first foundation year will be pivotal in fine tuning the programme and Founders will be invited to: Participate on the UrbanPlan UK Steering Group to help shape and guide the roll out of the programme. Assist in identifying schools where appropriate. Nominate staff to volunteer on the programmes; and Offer other in-kind support such as host site and office tours, work experience, careers advice etc. Founders will be recognised on programme materials, on websites and in press and promotional activity. Years 2&3: Extending The Programme As the initiative scales up in years two and three (40 schools a year), ULI will seek a further group of supporters to cover the additional cost of delivery. Each Founder will be given an opportunity to renew their support for a further two years alongside a wider group of partners. 7 UrbanPlan UK

TALKING TO THE EXPERTS LAST WEEK, YOU REALLY GOT A CLEAR INSIGHT INTO WHAT THEY DO IN THEIR DAY JOBS. IT WAS REALLY COOL TO GET A SENSE OF HOW PROPERTY WORKS IN REAL LIFE PUPIL Other Ways To Get Involved ULI is also happy to discuss: How your organisation might be able to provide support in-kind, for example via the provision of 3D models, filming resources, design etc. Bespoke delivery in a school of your choice using your staff as volunteers and beyond: ULI s aim will be to deliver the programme in a minimum of 40 schools a year (subject to funding). However, ULI will also be exploring ways to widen reach which may include, among other things, working with carefully selected partners (e.g. universities/ ULI members) to deliver UrbanPlan UK on ULI s behalf. What Are the Benefits For UrbanPlan UK Supporters? UrbanPlan UK offers supporters the opportunity to: Engage with a great new Corporate Social Responsibility initiative that will have a positive impact on the lives of young people. Get colleagues (or even clients or partners) actively involved through a highly professional, structured and worthwhile volunteering programme. Engage with young people in communities local to your business activities. Work in partnership with like-minded property industry colleagues motivated in the same way. Play a part in promoting the role real estate plays in transforming urban areas. Be publicly recognised around ULI s global network through branding and PR activities associated with the programme. UrbanPlan UK 10
