3 About The City of Hamilton Arts Awards is one of the oldest municipal-led arts awards programs in Canada. This program celebrates and builds awareness of the incredible contribution that artists make to Hamilton. Categories Artists can be nominated in any of the following categories. If you are nominating the same artist in more than one category, you must submit a complete nomination package for each category. Arts Administration: Administrators working in production, marketing, project/organizational management, development, research/curatorship, operations, facility management, etc. Arts Education: Education practices in schools or the community that provide a learning experience (for any age) led by a professional artist. Community Arts: Arts activities that involve professional artists and community members working together to develop collective experiences that express their community s unique identity. Fine Craft: Functional and non-functional craft-based work, including: beadwork, book arts, ceramics, textile, fashion and wearable art, furniture, glass, jewellery, metal and wood. Lifetime Achievement: Activity over an entire career, including artistic excellence, volunteer work and commitment to public awareness of the arts in the City of Hamilton and beyond. Media Arts: Film, video, audio/sound art, graphic design, animation, digital art, web-based art, media art installation, new media, or any fusion thereof. The nominee must be the driving creative force of the project and must maintain complete creative and editorial control over the work. Music: Performance, composition, songwriting, technical production (all genres of music). Performance: Dance, storytelling, performance art, comedy, children s performance. Theatre: Acting, directing, playwriting, or technical production (i.e. lighting, sound, costume design, etc.). Visual Arts: Painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, and installation art. Writing: Poetry, short story, written journalism, fiction, non-fiction, and publishing. Page 2 of 14
4 Eligibility Page 3 of 14 Please read the following guidelines to ensure that your nomination package meets all eligibility requirements and is completed in full. Incomplete packages will not be reviewed. Established, Emerging and Lifetime Artists: Individual artist who is 18 years of age or older (artist collectives, bands, duos, etc. are not eligible) Nominee must be actively producing work (with exemption of Lifetime Achievement Award) Current resident of Hamilton (including Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, Stoney Creek, Waterdown) who has lived in Hamilton for a minimum of 2 years Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident (Landed Immigrant) or have an application pending for Permanent Residency Nominee may be self-taught or have art training through formal education, apprenticeship or with a mentor or elder Full time students are not eligible (high school or post-secondary) Past City of Hamilton Arts Awards recipients cannot be nominated again in the same category Established and Emerging artists cannot be immediate family An Emerging artist cannot be nominated by more than one Established artist in the same category Artists who have previously received an Emerging award may be nominated in the Established category Nominator 18 years of age or older Can be an individual, organization or business residing in any city Cannot be an immediate family member of the nominees Cannot be nominated as an Emerging artist by their Established artist nominee Artists cannot self-nominate Cannot be a member of the Arts Advisory Commission, Arts Awards Steering Committee, City of Hamilton staff or elected officials
5 Definitions Established Artist: An established artist is an individual who has been practising professionally for 5 years or more. This typically includes: a history of public presentation or publication, recognition by his/her peers and involvement in the arts community. Full-time students cannot be nominated. Emerging Artist: An emerging artist is an individual who has been practising professionally for less than 5 years. This typically includes: a history of public presentation or publication, recognition by his/her peers and involvement in the arts community. Full-time students cannot be nominated. Lifetime Achievement: Due to the unique nature of the Lifetime Achievement Award, there is a separate nomination process. Please refer to page 12 for more information. Selection Process Jury: All Established and Lifetime Achievement nominations will be evaluated by an independent jury comprised of discipline-specific artists and arts professionals. A member of the Arts Advisory Commission will audit each jury session to ensure a fair and transparent process (non-voting position). Scoring: The jurors will select the strongest nomination based on three principle bodies of information: The Work, The Career and The Reception of the artist. Each of these elements will be weighted equally. Nominations must achieve a minimum benchmark score to be eligible for the award. If the benchmark is not met, the jury reserves the right to not select a winner in every category. Please refer to Established Artist Scoring on page 6 and Lifetime Achievement Scoring on page 7 for scoring criteria. Emerging Artist Selection Page 4 of 14 The Established Artist nominee is required to identify an Emerging Artist who they feel is deserving of recognition based on artistic merit, dedication to their practice and community involvement. If the Established Artist s nomination is successful, his/her choice for the Emerging Artist will also be awarded. Please refer to Step 2 on page 9.
6 Awards Page 5 of 14 Established Artist & Lifetime Achievement award recipients, selected by a jury, will receive: $2500 Bronze commemorative medal designed by artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt Civic and Media recognition Emerging Artist award recipients, selected by the Established Artist award recipients, will receive: $1000 Certificate of Recognition Civic and Media recognition Award Presentation The recipients of the 2014 City of Hamilton Arts Awards will be announced at a public event in Spring Nominees will be provided with advance tickets to the event. 10 Step 2: Emerging Artist Nomination Page 9 of 14 The Established Artist nominee is asked to identify an Emerging Artist who they feel is deserving of recognition based on artistic merit, dedication to their practice and community involvement. If the Established Artist s nomination is successful, his/her choice for the Emerging Artist will also be awarded. The goal of this process is to encourage the development of meaningful relationships between emerging and established artists in our community. Make your nomination count! Recognizing emerging talent is a core value of the Arts Awards program. 11 Step 3: The Career Page 10 of 14 Professional CV: Submit a professional curriculum vitae or resume for both the Established and Emerging nominees. This can include (but is not limited to): education and professional development, exhibitions, performances or publications, awards, professional recognition, professional associations or memberships, etc. Established Artist CV: 3 pages maximum Emerging Artist CV: 1 page maximum Step 4: The Reception Letters of Reference: Submit 2 letters of reference from individuals directly involved with the Established Artist s practice and/or career (i.e. colleagues, mentors, curators/ programmers, artistic directors, employers, arts administrators, students, etc.). The Nominator may be the author of one of the two letters. Letters must be dated within the last 2 years. Step 5: The Work Artist Statement: Submit a brief statement outlining the philosophy, inspiration and methodology behind the artist s or administrator s work (i.e. key themes, points of inspiration, techniques and/or materials). 500 words maximum Artwork Samples (category-specific): Submit the information and materials for the appropriate category. 12 Page 11 of 14 Artwork Samples (Category-Specific) Arts Administration, Arts Education and Community Arts Categories: Project Report: A written description outlining key details of a recent project / program (within the last 5 years). Please include the following information: nominee s role in project, budget, number of people engaged, impact and outcomes. 500 words maximum Fine Craft and Visual Arts Categories: 8 images of recent work (within the last 5 years) or 5 images and 1 audio/video sample of recent work (within the last 5 years) for Visual Artists whose practice includes time-based media on CD or DVD. Audio/video cued to appropriate time, 5 minutes maximum All images must be in JPEG format at a maximum of 1024 X 728 pixels and 300 dpi. Please clearly label image files and do not use any special characters, symbols, periods, or quotation marks (such as $,%,&) in the file name. Image list containing: title of artwork, materials, dimensions, date Media Arts: CD/DVD of recent work (within the last 5 years) cued to appropriate time OR website link to selected work (if artwork is web-based). 15 minutes maximum Production credits (i.e. director, designer, writer, etc.). Please clearly identify the nominee s role in the production. Music: 3 recent songs (within the last 5 years). If submitting an album, please note 3 songs you would like the jury to evaluate. Total submission 15 minutes maximum Production credits (i.e. producer, musicians, writer, etc.). Please clearly identify the nominee s role in the production. Performance: CD/DVD of recent work (within the last 5 years) cued to appropriate time. 15 minutes maximum Production credits (i.e. director, dancers, collaborators, etc.). Please clearly identify the nominee s role in the production. Theatre: CD/DVD of recent work (within the last 5 years) cued to appropriate time. 15 minutes maximum If nominating a playwright, submit a recent manuscript (within the last 5 years) pages Production credits (i.e. directors, actors, writers, company, etc.). Please clearly identify the nominee s role in the production. Writing: pages of published, recent work (within the last 5 years). Can submit typed manuscript pages or photocopied selections from books, periodicals, etc. Please do not submit original books, periodicals, etc. Production credits for each publication (date, publisher, editor, etc.). Please clearly identify the nominee s role in the production.
13 Lifetime Achievement Nomination Page 12 of 14 The Lifetime Achievement Award is intended to recognize the long-standing and significant achievements of an artist over the course of an entire career. This typically includes: artistic practice and achievement, recognition by peers and the artist s contribution to the local and broader artistic community. Past award winners (in other categories) may be nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award. Lifetime Achievement may be awarded posthumously. Step 1: Nomination Form This section is for the Lifetime Achievement Award ONLY. Do not fill out this section if you are preparing an Established and Emerging Artist nomination package. 14 Page 13 of 14 Step 2: Career Narrative The Lifetime Achievement Award is intended to recognize an artist s accomplishments over an entire career, including artistic excellence, volunteer work and commitment to public awareness of the arts in the City of Hamilton and beyond. Please submit a career narrative that clearly outlines significant achievements and milestones in the artist s career. This may be completed by either the nominee or the nominator. The narrative should include (but is not limited to): Career milestones (i.e. significant shows/performances, awards, etc.) Community involvement (i.e. volunteerism, advocacy, teaching, mentorship, etc.) Impact: how has the artist s accomplishments helped develop Hamilton s artistic community (i.e. capacity building, increased awareness/exposure, etc.) 5 pages maximum Step 3: Letters Of Reference A total of 6 letters of reference from individuals directly involved with the artist s practice and/or career (i.e. colleagues, mentors, curators/programmers, artistic directors, employers, arts administrators, students, etc.). 15 Terms of Nomination Page 14 of 14 All nomination materials submitted to the City of Hamilton Arts Awards program must be true and accurate. Falsified information will result in disqualification from the Arts Awards process. All artwork(s) submitted in the nomination package must be original work that does not violate the copyright of any other person. Phone numbers, and mailing addresses will not be made public as part of the Arts Awards nomination process. All other content submitted as part of the Established, Emerging and Lifetime nomination process (including but not limited to biographies and artwork samples) may be used on the internet, in print publications or in other methods of communication (whether verbal or written) for the purpose of organizing and administering the Arts Awards program, including evaluating the nominations and communicating with awards recipients, and for the purpose of promoting the Arts Awards program. Personal information of successful nominees will be used to promote future Arts Awards programs. Nominator names and contact information will not be made public by the City of Hamilton. Personal information on this form is collected under the authority of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c. 25.
