3 Being a QNMU Contact 27 February Brisbane 6 March Toowoomba 23 May Townsville Being a QNMU Contact is the first step to getting more involved in the QNMU. This course looks at the role of the QNMU Contact, the structure of the union, how the QNMU functions and how QNMU members make democratic decisions. This is our foundation course and therefore should be completed before you enrol on our longer activist courses. We will cover: Who is the QNMU? What does the QNMU do? How does the QNMU work? QNMU decision making. QNMU communication networks. What is happening in my workplace? Workplace Representatives 1 (3 day course) May Brisbane This course aims to assist activists and potential activists to develop the skills required to organise their workplace. Members should have completed the Being a QNMU Contact in the Workplace course before they enrol on Workplace Representatives 1. In this course we: Analyse your workplace. Look at how to grow the union. Understand the grievance procedure and apply it. Problem solve collective issues. Prepare and present a negotiation based on the resolution of your issues. Devise plans for organising your workplace. QNMU Branch Development 1 (2 day course) February Brisbane This course is aimed at helping develop strategies to encourage a vital, energetic Local Branch based on member activism. It is preferable that members have completed the Being a QNMU Contact in the Workplace course before they enrol on this course. Content includes: What is an organising union? Techniques for maintaining a healthy Local Branch. Effective meetings. Problem solving. Strategic planning. QNMU Branch Development 2 23 February Brisbane This course has been developed to assist Local Branches in bringing State issues to the QNMU Annual Conference. We will practise writing, amending and debating motions so we are ready for the conference floor. This is a great practically based day and a lot of fun. If you are a Branch Delegate or Alternate Delegate this course is a must. Content includes: The role of the Local Branch in State policy direction. Preparing an Annual Conference agenda item. Speaking confidently at Annual Conference. Knowing your entitlements and (2 day course) May Brisbane 5-6 June Gold Coast 5-6 June Cairns June Rockhampton What are my entitlements right now in 2018? Am I in the State or Federal Industrial Relations system? How do I find my entitlements and find answers to my questions? This course is a must for all nurses and midwives. It s about knowing how to determine your entitlements and how to find that information quickly. Professional Culpability - Where do I stand? 20 March Brisbane 18 April Brisbane 3 May Bundaberg In a resource stretched environment what are my responsibilities and where does my culpability lie at work? I had too many patients on that shift, what was I supposed to do? or I didn t have time to do everything and the NUM knew we were short staffed are statements we often hear but unfortunately are not very helpful in keeping us and our patients safe. This course covers information and practical strategies to protect our patients and ourselves including: An overview of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, Professional Practice Framework. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency processes and outcomes. Duty of Care and negligence. Ratios and your responsibilities. Coronial and Nursing and Midwifery Tribunal cases. Developing a plan to resolve conflict between professional standards and employer directives. Creating a safe workplace (WH&S) 19 April Brisbane Nursing and midwifery unions throughout Australia have made significant inroads into improving the health and safety of our members. This course aims to provide nurses and midwives with practical advice and tools to create a safe workplace culture by: Explaining the role of the H&S Representative. Providing an overview of your employer s obligations under the work health and safety regime. Creating knowledge about the risk assessment process. Consideration of the major WH&S concerns facing nurses and midwives today. Developing a plan to organise around a WH&S issue. Handling grievances 7 March Toowoomba 8 March Brisbane Activists often assist members to work through individual or collective issues. This course aims to: Clearly articulate the role of the activist in dealing with issues. Define various processes available to members. Identify ways to collectively advance issues. Give activists the environment to check, challenge and test our ideas about the handling of issues. Someone should do something about that! (2 day course) 2-3 May Brisbane This course is designed to help us move members from complaining in the tearoom to actively dealing with workplace issues! We have all tried but sometimes it hasn t worked so: What works? What steps can we take? How do we get others involved? What issues do we deal with? How do we stop doing all the work? How do we achieve change? This course focusses on ways to get members working on issues together. While there is no magic wand, knowing what we can do and sharing what has worked for other nurses is the way to make the future different from the past.
4 Your work, your voice 13 February Brisbane 8 March Toowoomba 22 March Brisbane 19 April Sunshine Coast 24 May Townsville 1 June Mackay 7 June Gold Coast 7 June Cairns 21 June Rockhampton is about getting everyone involved in informing the agreement negotiations and then implementation. This course covers interest-based bargaining, influencing negotiations, why we need to vote and how we can effectively implement our agreement once it is in place. This course will evolve in real time to reflect what is happening throughout the bargaining, voting and implementation stages so we can build the best possible outcome together. QH - How to make the BPF work for nurses & midwives 15 March Brisbane Having the Business Planning Framework implemented properly in your work unit makes your workplace safer for you and your patients and a much better place to be. QH is required to implement the BPF fully in every unit however there are lots of compliance issues. The BPF ratios sit on top of the legislated ratios. So if the BPF is not working properly in our unit it is time we got that sorted out. This course takes us through the detail of how to work up a Service Profile, the seven steps to calculating Nursing/Midwifery Hours per patient day and converting HPPD into notional nurse/midwife: patient ratios. We ll then explore the barriers to implementing the BPF and how to address those barriers. This course is open to all levels of nurses/midwives in the public sector and vital for every nurse and midwife. QH Consultative Committees - How to make them work 13 March Brisbane The course will cover how we can make consultative committees work, how to get more involved and what we can do when the committee isn t working properly. Knowing how to get issues addressed and responded to is the key to seeing real improvement for nurses and midwives locally. We will explore: The terms of reference for the various nursing and midwifery consultative forums. Understanding how to make the most of the committees/forums. Resolving issues when there is no local agreement. If you have been to a consultative forum training previously, it s now time for an update! If you are not on a consultative forum but you are interested, now is the time to come to training. QH Rostering - Equity & work life balance 14 March Brisbane 17 April Brisbane 2 May Bundaberg Bad rosters have the ability to make your life miserable. Frequently poor rostering practices are the result of running a service that is too large with staffing numbers that are too small, resulting in poor patterns of rostering, difficulty with accessing all forms of leave and even non-compliance with your basic entitlements. We cover: Award entitlements, HR Policy and Best Practice Rostering Guidelines. (Do we have to comply with them?) How do we use Nursing/Midwifery Hours per Patient Day to drive the roster build? Creating roster rules and a local roster template. Nursing and Midwifery Consultative Forum processes- how to escalate a roster issue. Come along to find out how to improve the roster in your work unit. QH - BPF for NUMs & MUMs 1 May Brisbane 22 May Townsville As a NUM or MUM preparing your service profile, calculating Nursing/ Midwifery hours per patient day and getting your Service Profile and resource allocation signed off can be a challenge. BPF notional ratios are mandatory for all settings including those that have legislated prescribed ratios. This course takes us through the detail of working up a Service Profile, the seven steps to calculating Nursing/Midwifery Hours per patient day and resource allocation. We ll then explore the steps of getting the BPF signed off and operational in your unit and how we can help you. All members are welcome at this course. No excuse for abuse! 21 March Brisbane 18 April Sunshine Coast 31 May Mackay Occupational violence is on the increase in both frequency and severity and is the subject of a taskforce report recently published. The statistics show that nurses and midwives report the overwhelming majority of occupational violence incidents. This important course will unpack the taskforce recommendations and provide some strategies to implement now in your workplace to assist in providing you and your co-workers with a safer workplace.
