2 Introduction Care Certificate Standard 8: Fluids and Nutrition This Standard has three learning outcomes:- 1. Understand the principles of hydration, nutrition and food safety 2. Support individuals to have access to fluids in accordance with their plan of care 3. Support individuals to have access to food and nutrition in accordance with their plan of care Each learning outcome has assessment criteria. The learning outcome states what you must know, or be able to do in your role as a health and social care worker. The learning outcomes have assessment criteria stating what you need to do to achieve the learning outcome. Your ability to meet the assessment criteria and achieve the learning outcomes for each standard will be assessed by a nominated colleague/s or an external assessor/s. Assessment criteria that require you to show you are able to do something require an observation of your performance. This means your assessor/nominated colleague will watch you performing your duties at work. The elearning course you have completed covered all of the knowledge required for this unit. However, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding by completing the questions in this pack; in a one to one discussion or as part of a group exercise. If your assessor asks you to complete written questions, please answer the questions in this pack as fully as you can, it may help you to refer to your notes from the elearning course. When you have finished the questions you must pass them to your assessor. Page 2 of 10

3 You must not copy your answers from any source as this will be viewed as plagiarism. If you wish to introduce information or quotes from other sources you must reference them. For example, Jones, (2014) said, Hydration is essential for health or Hydration is essential for health Source: this.co.uk or Hydration is essential for health Source: Hydration Now Magazine Creating a portfolio You will be required to create a portfolio of your work towards the Care Certificate. This means you will need to put all of your work in a folder and keep this safe. Your assessor/nominated colleague will assess your work for each standard and decide if you have met the required level of competence in the assessment criteria. Your portfolio will be your evidence of having completed all, or part of the Care Certificate. You will need to keep it in a safe place because you may be required to show it to others during your current employment and if you change your job. Page 3 of 10

4 Care Certificate Standard 8 Fluids and Nutrition Assessment methods The following assessment criteria must be observed. 8.2a Checking that drinks are within reach of those that have restrictions on their movement/mobility 8.2b Checking that drinks are refreshed on a regular basis 8.2c Checking that individuals are offered drinks in accordance with their plan of care 8.2d Supporting and encouraging individuals to drink in accordance with their plan of care 8.2e Knowing how to report any concerns to the relevant person. This could include:- Senior member of staff Carer Family member 8.3a Checking that any nutritional products are within reach of those that have restrictions on their movement/mobility 8.3b Checking food is provided at the appropriate temperature and in accordance with the plan of care i.e. the individual is able to eat it 8.3c Checking that appropriate utensils are available to enable the individual to meet their nutritional needs as independently as possible 8.3d Supporting and encouraging individuals to eat in accordance with their plan of care Has this been observed? This could include: Senior member of staff Carer Family member Your assessor may record their observation on the document provided at the back of this workbook or on the documentation used within your workplace.
