10 Catholic Charities of Idaho The pages that follow offer a brief description of the services provided by Catholic Charities of Idaho (CCI). Catholic Charities of Idaho is a non-profit organization providing social services and working for social justice. The agency prioritizes volunteerism and collaborative endeavors with other organizations and Catholic parishes. Catholic Charities of Idaho offers services to all people regardless of religion, age, gender, disability, race/ethnicity, income, or background. 11 CCI MISSION: Catholic Charities of Idaho advances the dignity of individuals, families, and communities by strengthening families, advocating justice, and engaging the community to serve the common good. CCI VISION: An Idaho where hope prevails, justice reigns, and people are transformed. SERVICES: Services available in the locations indicated, B Boise, C Coeur d'alene, J Jerome, N Nampa Crisis Services: Case Management (B, C, J, N) Helps individuals utilize available resources to meet their needs. Information & Referral (all regions) Links families who are in need of vital information to resources and services in the community. Rural Food Distribution (E) In collaboration with the Idaho Food Bank, CCI distributes food to families in need. Individual & Group Counseling (B, C, N) individual, marriage & family, post partum, and Project Rachel (post abortion healing). Family Support & Literacy English Language & Conversation Classes (B, J) Teaches ESL and other literacy classes to families and individuals to help them secure a better future. After School Youth Programs (J) A series of afterschool programs to help children with extra tutoring and other educational tools they need to succeed. Parenting Education and Leadership Classes (B, C, J, N) Teaches positive parenting, advocacy, and leadership skills to parents with children of all ages. Domestic Violence & Family Immigration Legal Services (B, N) Provides immigration services and representation to eligible survivors of domestic violence and witnesses of crime and helps those who are eligible to become citizens to a low cost and accredited alternative to do so. Financial Literacy Education Financial Education (B, N) Promotes resources that provide basic financial education and information to enable families to build assets and achieve financial stability. Job Skill Building (B) Assists people with building skills to help them improve their financial stability. 12 The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person to person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. As a reflection of the whole family of God, Members, who are known as Vincentians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group, and economic level. Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility and sharing, which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule. Organized locally, Vincentians witness God's love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ. ( The following pages provide information about the services offered by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Southwest and North Idaho. St. Vincent de Paul s thrift stores and services are provided throughout the entire state. 13 The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, North Idaho All information below is from: Emergency Assistance: Whether it is for clothing, blankets, household goods, a motel or gas voucher, hygiene products, a bus ticket, or a hot meal, homeless and low income people throughout North Idaho can come to us for help. Emergency assistance is available through our main Social Service Office. Emergency Shelter: Each shelter provides a clean, safe atmosphere with enough space to sleep twelve guests per night. Each guest also receives two meals per day and has the opportunity to receive information and referrals to needed services, job counseling, and life skills classes. While at the shelter guests volunteer time at the thrift store and do needed chores at the shelter. They also have up to 7 days to find employment and are required to save half of their income so they will have money available for their own residence. Our shelters are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and guests can stay for up to 30 days. Both are also drug and alcohol free (as are all St. Vincent facilities) and guests are expected to be substance free on or off the premises. Warming Center: During the winter months, St. Vincent de Paul s emergency shelters fill to capacity, leaving many homeless unsheltered out in the dangerous cold. So, in partnership with the City of Coeur d Alene, St. Vincent s will open the meeting room behind the Coeur d Alene Thrift Store to unsheltered homeless individuals when the temperature reaches 15 degrees. There they will be able to come in, get warm, rest, and get something hot to eat and drink and remain safe. Community Dining Room: As the only soup kitchen for the hungry and homeless in Kootenai County that provides nutritious meals five days a week, St. Vincent de Paul s Community Dining Room provides free dinner Monday through Friday from 5:00 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent s meeting room behind the Coeur d Alene thrift store. While each meal is free and available to anyone, donations can also be given at the door and are always welcome! Case Management: Case Management services are a way to help clients be accountable for their own lives, as well as the assistance they receive. Working with a skilled Case Manager, clients build an individualized case plan that maps out their goals and their path to success and self reliance. Case Managers offer support, direction, referrals, and accountability, while meeting with clients as often as necessary. Housing for Veterans: While the veteran s in our transitional housing program receive the same services as other clients, we work to provide more specialized services that meet their unique needs. We collaborate with the VA in Spokane to provide case management that incorporates mental, physical, and substance abuse health services to better help these veterans succeed in obtaining and keeping permanent housing. Veterans Counseling & Service Center: St. Vincent de Paul s Veterans Service Center aids veterans and their families in their times of need, as well as helps with any concerns regarding educational benefits and entitlements. Transportation to the V.A. medical center in Spokane for medical treatment is also available. Payee Services: For clients who need help budgeting their monthly bills, St. Vincent de Paul offers Payee Services. By signing St. Vincent up as an approved payee, clients can feel secure knowing that their income will be managed responsibly and their monthly bills will be paid each month on time, every time.. 14 Career Counseling: St. Vincent de Paul s Caring Career Counseling Program teaches clients the skills they need to succeed in the world of work and become self reliant. Housing First: A different approach from traditional emergency shelter or transitional housing, the Housing First model is housing based, with an immediate and primary focus on helping individuals and families quickly access and sustain permanent housing followed by case management and social services. ICARE Parent Information Resource Center: ICARE offers an array of best practice parenting classes including Nurturing Parenting and Nurturing Fathers. These classes are offered at Transitional Housing and in elementary schools around Kootenai County. Additionally we host a fun and engaging parent support group. A best practice child sexual abuse prevention class available as well. Housed at the new H.E.L.P. Center, 201 E. Harrison Ave., ICARE also has resources for children and families and offers links to other community resources. Website: USDA Child Care Food Program: St. Vincent de Paul administers a U.S. Department of Agriculture Child Care Food Program designed to provide children in day care with nutritious food on a regular basis. For more information about the Child Care Food Program (CCFP), please contact the Program Director, Deanna Jeffres at or by at deanna@stvincentdepaulcda.org. The CCFP office is located in the H.E.L.P. Center 201 E. Harrison, Coeur d Alene. Home Outreach: With a group of dedicated volunteers, St. Vincent de Paul provides outreach services through home visits, with the goal of attending to unmet needs of our clients. This service is available for people who are unable to come to our Social Service Office for assistance, as well as others in need of support and companionship. Legal Link: Local attorneys volunteer their time to provide free legal consultations at our weekly Legal Link clinic. Fashions for Your Future: Fashions is a two hour workshop where we furnish each participant with: a personal shopper free clothing free cosmetics and instruction on how to use them the right way in the workplace interview tips career counseling Art on the Edge: Art on the Edge (AOE) is a non profit art program provided by St. Vincent de Paul for community youth. In Art on the Edge engages youth and the community through free after school classes, public art, and festivals, with the mission to provide a creative environment for all youth using art as a tool for learning problemsolving, goal setting, community values, and increased self esteem. 15 Youth Mentoring Program: While parents are taking life skills and parenting classes that teach them how to make better choices, strengthen their families, and become self sufficient, we supervise and engage the children in activities that build their competence, confidence, connection, and character; activities that promote specific academic or hands on skills, improve their self esteem and sense of identity, and teach them how to relate better with peers, parents, teachers, and other people in their lives. Harger House: Harger Club House gives people living with a cognitive disability the chance to regain employment, companionship, ties to their community and self respect. It is both a program and a place where people can go to find socialization, support, and a sense of purpose. Transitional Housing For more information on any of SVDP Transitional Housing facilities or you if would like to apply to the transitional housing program, please contact SVDP Transitional Housing at To be eligible for St. Vincent de Paul's Transitional Housing Program, an individual or family must be homeless, have a verifiable income, be willing to submit to a criminal background check, and demonstrate they are drug free. They must also show they are motivated to become self sufficient by participating in all required program components. Units are subject to availability, with a possible waiting list. Rent is based on income. 17 Community Action Partnership Programs Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) enables low-income families to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. During the last 32 years, the U.S. Department of Energy s (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program has provided weatherization services to more than 6.2 million lowincome families. Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded block grant that provides funding to help low income households make home heating more affordable, avoid disconnection of utility services during the winter, and maintain a warm, safe, and healthy environment for households with young children, the elderly, and the disabled. LIHEAP has been operating since Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) program provides States with funds to lessen poverty in communities. The funds provide a range of services and activities to assist the needs of low-income individuals including the homeless, migrants and the elderly. The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps improve the diets of lowincome Americans, regardless of age, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance at no cost. TEFAP plays a vital role in providing food assistance by supplementing other donated foods distributed by the emergency feeding organizations. Idaho Telephone Service Assistance Program (ITSAP) a monthly discount off of your basic telephone service and help with the installation of a new phone for low-income households. REACH OUT FOR HELP at the following places: a. Idaho Department of Labor local offices b. Community Corrections Adult Probation and Parole Offices (Idaho Department of Corrections) c. Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation d. Idaho Department of Health and Welfare c. Faith and Community-Based Agencies (like the Boise Rescue Mission) 2. BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT YOU CAN OBTAIN Your first job after your release does not have to be your ideal job. Be prepared to build or rebuild your employment history. Accept that based on the felony conviction certain jobs may not be available to you, at least for now. However, our resources are structured to assist in finding a job that is a good match for you. Past ex-offenders have had success as: a. Retail salespersons b. Warehouse workers c. Laundry and dry-cleaning workers d. Helpers trade assistants e. Construction laborers f. Wait staff g. Food preparation and serving-related persons h. Maids and housekeeping cleaners i. Janitors 3. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RESOURCES TO MARKET YOURSELF TO EMPLOYERS If you completed a training program while you were incarcerated, make sure you let the employer know. Some areas in Idaho have different resources, but the following are available statewide: a. One-on-one consulting with a Workforce Consultant b. Job search workshops or seminars c. Potential training opportunity determined on a case-by-case basis d. Federal bonding e. Work Opportunity Tax Credit for employers 4. LET THE EMPLOYER KNOW UP FRONT ABOUT YOUR CONVICTION Don t hesitate to disclose this information. Once it is out in the open, you can focus on telling the employer your strengths and your goals for the future. The employer s role is to pay you for your work, not to discuss your problems. Focus on talking about what you can add to the business. On an interview: a. Speak clearly b. Cover tattoos and remove body piercings c. Don t look at your watch d. Dress appropriately. 27 Celebrate Recovery Celebrate Recovery is a Christian centered recovery program based on the 12 Steps of AA and the 8 Beatitudes. It is for people who have experienced many of life s hurts, bad habits, and hang ups. A hurt, habit, or hang up is something that hinders our walk with God and with each other. The Celebrate Recovery program was written by pastors Rick Warren (who wrote the book The Purpose Driven Life) and John Baker. All of life s hurts, habits, and hang ups are addressed through the curriculum used in a group format. Groups may include: alcohol and drug addictions, adult children of alcoholics, anger groups, co dependency, eating problems, sexual addictions such as pornography, food addictions, financial recovery, love and relationships addictions, and those who have experienced sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.
