2 OSHA Training Institute Courses Midwest OSHA Education Centers In 2002, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) designated the Midwest OSHA Education Center (MOEC) consortium as an official training provider of the OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) network. MOEC is a partnership between Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; St. Louis University School of Public Health, St. Louis, Missouri; and the, Omaha, Nebraska. This partnership of programs provides a broad network of training resources that enables OSHA Region 7 to offer premium quality training and educational services. As OSHA Training Institute Education Centers, we work closely with OSHA to offer innovative local training based on regional needs and employment trends in the areas of occupational health and safety, environmental management, disaster and emergency response issues. Our education centers offer employers and their employees a wide array of top quality services and courses, seminars, distance learning opportunities and contract training programs. These programs can also be customized to best meet your organization s specific training needs. 3 500 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for Construction This course is designed for personnel in the private sector interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health outreach programs to their employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed on those topics that are required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as those that are the most hazardous using OSHA standards as a guide. Course participants are briefed on effective instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Program, to conduct both a 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health courses, and to issue cards to participants verifying course completion. Prerequisites: OSHA 510 course and five years of construction safety experience. A college degree in occupational safety and health, a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation in the applicable training area may be substituted for two years of experience. 5 521 Introduction to Industrial Hygiene This four-day course addresses the general concepts of industrial hygiene. Topics include recognizing common health hazards such as air contaminants and noise, hazard evaluation through screening and sampling, and control methods for health hazards including ventilation and personal protective equipment. 4 sessions / $ Health Hazard Awareness The goal of this course is to assist participants with recognizing potential health hazards in the workplace and avoiding, minimizing, controlling or eliminating them whenever possible. 7 2264 Permit-required Confined Space Entry This course is designed to enable students to recognize, evaluate, control and abate safety and health hazards associated with permit-required confined space entry. This course focuses on the specific requirements of 29 CFR (a)(1). Each paragraph of the standard is discussed with references to the OSHA directive letters of interpretation and preamble rationale. Technical topics include the recognition of confined space hazards, basic information about the instrumentation used to evaluate atmospheric hazards and general permit space ventilation techniques. This course features workshops on confined space classification permits and program evaluation. It has been shown that warehousing has become an increasingly hazardous area to work in. OSHA has identified public storage and warehousing as one of seven industries with a high lost times claims rate. Injuries may occur from forklifts, material handling and lifting, exposure to hazardous substances, and slips, trips and falls. This course will discuss powered industry trucks, material handling/lifting/ergonomics, hazard communication, waling and working surfaces, exit routes and fire protection. ETOS-5030 / 1 session / $180 > 5502 Mon 8am-5pm Mar 14 Midwest OSHA Education Centers Instructor Profiles AJ Gajdosik, CSP, ARM-P AJ is a graduate of Central Missouri State University with a B.S. in safety management. AJ has safety experience in the construction, manufacturing and agriculture industries. He has earned his certified safety professional designation as well as associate degrees in risk management and risk management for public entities. AJ is also an instructor trainer in CPR, first aid and safety for the American Red Cross, and is authorized to teach both construction and general industry OSHA outreach training classes. AJ currently works full time for Amerisure Insurance as a senior loss control consultant. Christopher J. Burgoyne A graduate of Iona College with a bachelor s degree in business administration, Christopher is an authorized OSHA construction outreach trainer, an authorized OSHA general industry outreach trainer and recently completed the lead abatement supervisor course. His extensive experience includes leading roles in businesses as president and vice president, where he was responsible for product training and staff management. He has worked in the education field as the director of education for Independent Electrical Contractors, and currently works as a substitute teacher for the Saint Charles, Missouri School District. Gregory T. Smith Gregory is a graduate of Iowa State University, where he earned his B.S. in occupational safety, a graduate certificate of public management and a master s degree of public administration. His education also includes an associate of science degree in fire science technology from Des Moines Area Community College. Gregory has experience as a safety director, as well as experience as an industrial hygienist. He is one of four battalion chiefs for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter for the Marion Fire Department. 10 Occupational Safety and Health Specialist Certificate Program The occupational safety and health specialist certificate program consists largely of courses developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration s OSHA Training Institute, and requires a minimum of 210 hours of course contact hours. Individual courses are offered at each of the Midwest OSHA Education Center consortium locations (Kirkwood Community College, St. Louis University School of Public Health and the National Safety Council, Greater Omaha Chapter) and are also accepted from other regional National Safety Council affiliates (Iowa-Illinois Safety Council and St. Louis Safety Council). We will recognize some classes taken from Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and Barton Community College in Kansas. A minimum of five years experience in either construction or general industry is required for admission to the OSHA 500 or OSHA 501 trainer courses.
