1 Friday, October 13, 2017 Valhalla Inn Hotel 1 Valhalla Inn Road, Thunder Bay, ON This northern regional conference, participants and speakers will have opportunities to review guidelines, best practices and recent research in several women s health topics. Given the context of remote, rural, and urban care, provided through primary and specialty care, the participants of this conference will review common concerns and learning points relevant to our patient populations in an interdisciplinary setting. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES This conference aims to: 1. Identify common best practice approaches to the management of antepartum and intrapartum care. 2. Discuss common gynecological issues faced by women throughout their lifespan. 3. Demonstrate enhanced delivery of care throughout Northern Ontario. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This conference is targeted to family physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, medical learners, and all health care disciplines with an interest in women s health. ACCREDITATION This Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Office at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine for up to 6 Mainpro+ credits. Assess the advantages of increased surveillance and timing of delivery with respect to diabetes in pregnancy. 09:00-09:30 The use of progesterone to prevent preterm birth Dr. Amber Dudar Prescribe progestins for the prevention of preterm birth. Identify patients that would benefit from progesterone supplementation in pregnancy. 09:30-10:00 Topic: Vitamin D and B12 deficiency and anemia in pregnancy Dr. Naana Jumah Diagnose anemia in the pregnant patient. Identify patients who are candidate for parenteral iron therapy. Identify patients who would benefit from vitamin B12 injections over oral treatment. Select the appropriate patient to screen for vitamin D deficiency. 10:30-11:00 REFRESHMENT BREAK 11:00-11:30 Aspirin in the prevention of preeclampsia and placental insufficiency Dr. Rudy Novak Identify the indications and uses for ASA in pregnancy. Select the appropriate patients to start ASA in the first trimester. Choose the correct time frame to initiate and stop ASA. 11:30-12:00 Overview of the new Ontario Antenatal Record Krista Lysenko 12:00-13:00 LUNCH Complete the 5th revision of the Ontario Perinatal Record (OPR) in clinical setting. Differentiate the new terminology in the OPR. Identify changes in documentation on the expanded OPR.
3 AGENDA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, continued 13:00-14:00 Topic: Menopause from a primary care perspective Dr. Denise Black Explain the benefits and risks of treatment for vasomotor symptoms, psychological symptoms and altered sexual function in menopausal women. Diagnose and manage genitourinary syndrome of menopause. Assess the efficacy and safety of complementary therapies and unregulated preparations in menopausal women. 14:00-14:30 Office management of spontaneous abortion Dr. Louise Knowles Diagnose early pregnancy loss. Identify patients who are candidates for medical management of missed or incomplete abortion. Prescribe treatment and manage side effects and conduct appropriate follow up for patients with early pregnancy loss. 14:30-15:00 LARC Dr. Laura Power Identify potential myths and barriers to the use of LARC in patients requesting contraception. Recommend and prescribe LARC to young women requesting a reliable method of contraception. 15:00-15:30 REFRESHMENT BREAK 15:30-16:00 Medical treatment of fibroids Dr. Frank Potestio Classify and evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding in premenopausal women. Explain the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of uterine fibroids in women of reproductive age. Manage symptomatic uterine fibroids using medical therapy. 16:00-16:30 Infertility from a primary care perspective Dr. Andrew Siren Identify an approach to a preliminary work-up for infertility, before specialist referral (timing, content and urgency).
