The course approach presents concepts and behaviors of nursing roles within the context of the nursing process and multicultural, holistic healthcare. Emphasis is on theoretical and practical concepts of nursing skills required to meet the needs of patients in a variety of settings. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the LPN s role in providing safe and effective fundamental patient care related to specified nursing competencies. 2. Describe the concepts of nutrition in relation to health, wellness, and illness. 3. Utilizing the nursing process, apply the concepts of health, wellness, and illness in a variety of settings. NRSG 131 Fundamentals of Nursing Lab 3 This lab is an integration of clinical skills performance using healthcare scenarios which focus on implementation of the nursing process, clinical decision making, and caring interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in a variety of healthcare settings. 1. Perform safe, patient -centered, nursing care utilizing evidence based nursing interventions. 2. Utilize the nursing process based upon critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural and ethnic influences, and nursing principles. 1 P a g e

2 NRSG 135 NRSG 136 Title Pharmacology for Practical Nurses Pharmacology for Practical Nurses Lab Description 3 This course introduces the student to the knowledge needed to provide safe nursing care to patient s across the life span in the administration of medications. Content covered includes the basic pathophysiology of common disease processes, as well as the basic principles of pharmacology such as pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, medication interactions, and potential adverse medication reactions. The emphasis is on patient- centered care utilizing the nursing process and incorporating evidence based practice. 2 This lab integrates the knowledge of safe medication administration into a laboratory environment. This includes dosage calculation, and safe administration of medications through a variety of appropriate routes, including intravenous therapy. Learning Outcomes 3. Demonstrate safety for self and patient during the performance of nursing skills. 4. Demonstrate concepts learned in NRSG 130 in a lab setting. 1. Identify major categories and classifications of medications in relation to drug effects on common diseases in the treatment of commonly occurring health challenges. 2. Identify the roles of the LPN in relation to medication administration and patient education in a variety of healthcare settings. 1. 3 NRSG 152 NRSG 153 Title Gerontology and Community Nursing Gerontology and Community Nursing Clinical Description 2 This course presents the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide high quality holistic nursing care for the geriatric patient, as well as other vulnerable populations in the local and rural communities. The safe application of the nursing process in community based, patientcentered, interdisciplinary care environments is emphasized in order to promote patients wellbeing in regards to common acute and chronic health issues, including end-of-life and palliative care. 2 This clinical integrates theory into the clinical setting. The emphasis is on promoting the highest level of health and wellness for common acute and chronic health issues for the geriatric and other vulnerable populations in local and rural communities. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the psychosocial aspects specific to the holistic care of the geriatric patient. 2. Describe the normal physiological changes associated with the aging process. 3. Describe nutritional needs and diets used with the geriatric population for optimal health 4. Describe the role of the LPN in diverse settings in relationship to cultural and ethical considerations. 1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in providing interventions necessary for health promotion, managing common health conditions, and working effectively with interdisciplinary teams to provide care and services for aged adults throughout their lifespan. 2. 4 NRSG 140 NRSG 141 Title Adult Health Nursing Adult Health Nursing Clinical Description Semester The course is designed to build upon the knowledge acquired in Fundamentals of Nursing. The focus is on safe, effective care environments, health promotion and maintenance, and psychosocial and physiological integrity of adults who are experiencing health interruptions in welldefined practice settings. Principles of pharmacology, cultural competency, gerontology, nutrition, end-of-life and palliative care are integrated throughout the course. 3 This clinical is an integration of experiences in well-defined practice settings. The focus is on implementation of the nursing process, professional behaviors, communication, clinical decision making, caring interventions and collaboration in interdisciplinary practice to prevent, promote, maintain and restore basic health. Learning Outcomes 1. Discuss professional values including accountability and reliability. 2. Discuss a holistic approach to patient care including the physical, nutritional, psychosocial, cultural, and ethical/legal aspects of the person. 3. Identify common diagnostic measures related to the health problems presented with emphasis on nursing assessment and responsibilities. 4. Recognize common symptoms and nursing problems associated with management of the adult patient in the acute care setting. 5. Describe nursing interventions to successfully care for adult patients with diseases and health care issues presented. 1. Utilize the nursing process and critical thinking to prioritize care for the adult patient. 2. Demonstrate safe, effective and culturally competent nursing care for patient s experiencing common, welldefined health alterations in settings where stable patients are anticipated. 3. 5 NRSG 142 NRSG 143 Title Nursing Care of Women and Children Nursing Care of Women and Children Clinical Description 3 This course introduces the student to the knowledge needed to provide safe nursing care for the female patient and family with regards to reproductive issues, including perinatal. Also included is the child patient and family with regards to normal growth and development as well as common and chronic disease processes. Psychosocial aspects of care, legal and ethical issues, and cultural beliefs will be incorporated throughout. The emphasis is on patient and family-centered care utilizing evidence based practice, and effective interpersonal communication skills while functioning within an interdisciplinary team environment. 1 This clinical integrates the knowledge of care for women, children, and families in a variety of clinical settings. Learning Outcomes 1. Explain prenatal development from conception through birth. 2. Discuss the normal physiological changes and psychological adaptations that occur in pregnancy and postpartum. 3. Explain the role of the LPN in caring for the antepartum, postpartum and newborn patient. 4. Explain growth and development of the pediatric patient from infancy to adolescence. 5. Identify the importance of health nutrition and types of diet therapy needed for normal growth and development 6. Describe the effect of illness and hospitalization on the pediatric patient and family. 7. Describe the health and illness of women throughout the lifespan. 1. Apply skills in communicating effectively according to the developmental level of the childbearing woman, child, family, and with members of the interprofessional healthcare team. 2. 6 NRSG 148 NRSG 149 Title Leadership Issues for Practical Nurses Leadership Issues for Practical Nurses Clinical Description 2 This course explores the legal and ethical principles of Practical Nursing leadership in providing safe, relationship-centered care. The concepts of accountability, fiscal responsibility in relation to patient outcomes, collaboration, effective communication, conflict management skills, critical thinking, delegation, principles of human caring, and prioritization are emphasized throughout the course. Application of concepts in the rural environment are included. 1 This clinical integrates theory with implementation of basic leadership skills. Preceptor experiences are based on selected nursing needs in the local and rural communities with a focus on knowledge, skills, and attitudes of nursing leadership needed to provide high quality, holistic, safe nursing care. Total 42 Learning Outcomes 1. Identify and describe key characteristics of the LPN in a management and leadership role. 2. Utilize the nursing process and clinical judgment to prioritize nursing care for patients from various cultural and diverse backgrounds. 3. Discuss current issues and future concerns for practical nursing and the nursing profession. 1. Participate as a member of the health team in planning and incorporating therapeutic interventions, collaboration rehabilitative/restorative care concepts, concepts of death with dignity, and the nursing process in nursing care. 2. Demonstrate effective leadership and management skills under the direction of the RN. 3. Demonstrates the ability to responsibly access, utilize, and evaluate patient care technologies and information management systems in the delivery of safe, quality care. 4.
